How to spot a chopper on the course
What equipment, apparel, etc. makes you prejudge someone as a chopper?
For me, it's the following...
Muddy as hell saddle shoes
Pleather bag with tubes for every club
Stuffed animal head covers
More than 1 bag tag
Clones
Feel free to add to the list since it's far from being complete.

Depends on the cigar. A phillies blunt sure, an Arturo Fuente Opus-X maduro Churchill, hell no.
How are there 3 posts on here and no mention of a HYBRID in the bag!!!
honorable mentions go to:

I agree though, more than 1/2 of the tour plays cast POS shovels & gaybrids now instead of blades so they are choppers indeed!

If you are paid to wear and play a companies gear you are clearly not a chopper.
If you play a $25 muni and dress that way you are more than likely a hack!

brush tee
more than 14 clubs in the bag
extremely bad alignment/setup
4 or more poor practice swings (usually followed by a completely different swing over the ball)

Yet another lame thread, all about image and "not being one of them".......

The most obvious calling card of the chopper on the course is without doubt the guy who is on the green still wearing his glove and unclips the ball marker they put on cheap arse gloves and uses it to mark his ball. No self respecting golfer would use a clip on marker. The only way to mark your ball is with a coin.

Hey, I putt with my glove on. It really does make me feel better connected to the putter.
But I don't use the stupid marker. IT's a foot tall, for pete's sake. If somebody hits a putt really well and it hits that thing, it could bounce up and whack me in the eye.

My point was the unclipping and re clipping of the ball marker to the glove, not having a go at wearing a glove to putt (just happens that guys who use the clip on markers invariably have to putt with a glove on). Even using the glove ball markers but keeping them in the pocket would be less of a hacker thing to do than clipping it on and off every time you mark your ball.
Another classic hacker sign is wearing blue denim jeans during a competition round (if the club captain or starter doesn't have the balls to pull them on about it). It looks especially hackeresque when the back of the jeans sag down and expose the 'money box'. Any such satorial transgressions show a flagrant disregard of the traditions of the game and scream hacker.

Anybody who even thinks about picking up a golf ball anywhere on the course during a competition. Or hits a ball without identifying it as their own ball. I find old pricks fall into this category more than out and out hackers.

You have a back pocket for the card. Use it. Real golfers like to have the card on hand to assess indexes and judge distances. Choppers don't.
I did mean whilst wearing shorts. In Australia over 50% of all golfers wear shorts and those medium length socks look ridiculous.
I have another thing to add to the list. Any apparel or attire that has images of a golfer all over them. Particularly shirts and socks.

In my book that's a cause for justifiable homicide. At least you found him and got him to place it back so you could continue your round (I hope). The guys who sneakily pick it up and deny it when you ask them really make my blood boil.

-
Waiting for the green to clear on a par 5 from 300 out after hitting a 220 drive. This applies to old farts as well as hackers.
Usually followed by a cold top or a chunk to about 150.
-
You have a back pocket for the card. Use it. Real golfers like to have the card on hand to assess indexes and judge distances. Choppers don't.
Ehhh....I don't think this is one of your better chopper examples bud.
Chances are, you aren't ever too far away from your push cart, seeing as how it holds all of your golf clubs, and you need to those to actually play a round of golf. I'm thinking one could easily look down at their cart and check the card if they wanted to access any of that information, though most scorecards tell you nothing about distances aside from total yardage anyway.
It's stupid to put a clunky scorecard (and a pencil) in your pocket, if you have another place where you can keep it. In my pocket, I carry an extra ball, some tees, and a marker. And when I putt, my glove goes in my back pocket. I think that is enough items to keep on yourself. Now if you have yardage book, I could understand that, but those are typically a lot smaller than scorecards anyhow.
-
In my pocket, I carry an extra ball,
I'm always suspicious of people who do this. Especially when it's the same brand and number as the ball they are playing. Not making any accusations here, but I've seen the old 'trouser ball' be employed on more than one occassion over the years.

In a country where you're all descended from ex cons I can understand your suspicions.
-
Nothing beats waiting on someone who addresses the ball for a good 2 minutes after lining up their shot, then proceeding to lay the sod over it good for about a 15 yard shot. Then do it all over again.
I cannot stand for people to mark their ball on the green with a damn tee.
Just like NaH said, guys who wait for the green to clear on a par 5 only to popup their 3 wood 50 yards into the trees.
Guys who wear their cap backwards.
Guys who damage the cup taking the flag out, then drop the flag (bottom first) within 3 feet of the hole, making a nice big indention on the green.
Guys who use their ears as tee holders.
Guys who don't like their lie in the rough so they make a "tater dump" by hitting the ground with their iron till it forms a little mound to hit off of. (not in tournament play obviously)
Guys who strap several gloves on the post of the golf cart.
Guys who stand directly behind or on the other side of your line while you putt.
Guys who carry 2 or 3 extra balls in their pocket.
Guys who use a tee or the toe of their putter to fix their ball mark.
You see it all at Arkansas public courses. I'm sure I'll think of more.
-

What's wrong with a cart bag for someone who plays using a cart? Would it make morse sense to use a stand bag that would wobble all over the cart and give you less room?
Great thread guys!

So you'd rather wait for that 70 year old codger to carry his bag up that par 5 rather than hop in his cart and ride to his next shot?
I don't understand bashing people for riding carts, if anything it speeds up play (unless it's cart path only) I enjoy walking, but a lot of people have health problems preventing them from walking 18 holes in 100 degree heat while maintaining an approved pace of play. I thank God for the invention of carts.

How to spot a chopper. I look for:
a tour style bag full of top of the line OEM gear including blades, no hybrids and a driver with way to little loft. The key word in this thread was PREJUDGE. All the on course actions revealing a hacker are not relavent. Of the relavent posts, I've seen single digit players exhibit all except:
Buy 15 Pinnacles in pro shop; Play in sneakers; Carry a Ball Retreiver; Wear cap backwards( or sideways ); Carry 2 or 3 extra balls in pocket.
Guys walking up to the ballwasher on the first hole to clean a ball that's five rounds old.
Unless you are assuming the guy just found the ball or only plays on courses with no O.B. or water, I'd differ with you on this one. To play a ball for 1 full round let alone 5 rounds requires skill. The 70 I shot Monday and the 71 I shot today were with such a ball. And since they don't have ballwashers at the 18th green, I'll be washing the ball at the 1st tee again Friday. At $4 a pop, I stretch ProVI's as far as I can.
-
Eh, I use a tee to mark my ball sometimes, but only if I'm playing by myself. I'm too lazy to get my divot tool and real ball marker out of my bag. The second I join up with someone though, I go get it.

A chopper is anyone who is so weak fuking minded that seeing someone mark their ball with a tee bothers them.
A chopper is so fuking gay that seeing another man in socks above the ankles bothers him because he fears popping a chub.
A chopper is someone stupid enough to carry their bag when its 105* out when instead they could be pulling it on a nice easy cart. They would rather have a giant sweat stained back and look like a fuking douche in the clubhouse after.
I would rather golf with a chopper any day than a fuking poser.

Yes HB, but apparently that doesn't apply in Canada. According to LyleGay, Mike Weir can mark his ball with his 4" chopper driver tee any time he damn well wants.

fix a ball mark with a tee...
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE
would you tee up the ball with a pitch mark tool?
so just trying to recount some of the pga tourneys i've seen... dont ever recall a tourny round with guys marking their ball with a tee.
there's an old saying that goes " use the right tool for the job" so in case you struggle with comprehension: mark your ball with a coin or something of similar shape and size. fix pitch marks with HELLO... a pitch mark repair tool: and not a freaking tee.
so it is written, so let it be done.

I would agree, as I also worked maitenance for a golf course. However... I've not been hitting greens enough as of late for that to be a problem. When I do hit the green, it's normally not leaving a pitch mark cause our greens are getting in US Open local qualifying conditions. When it does, if it's not something that can be fixed by a tee, then I'll go get the divot tool and keep it in pocket for rest of the round. I always fix my pitch mark cause I hate having to putt through the marks of someone who forgot.

"buy a 15 pack of Pinnacles at the pro shop"
Hey now...let's not go too far. Before winning a tournament with a -3 68 last fall I went into the shop and asked a worker (also a good friend) what ball I should buy. He said 15 pack Pinnacles (yellow) were on sale for $18. I bought the box and went on to use a yellow Pinnacle to win. Let's not judge a book by it's cover. Most people found it strangely hilarious that someone of my calibur was using such a bad golf ball...I, on the other hand, really didn't want to play in the tournament but was coerced into it because of low enrollment. Why is it I can't be a good golfer playing with Pinnacles...Ok, seriously, a ProV is 100 times better around the greens, but $4 per ball? That's a gallon of gas!

We've all seen what happens when mods jump the gun and stop threads before they get a hcance to show their worth. It's certainly a well known track and I think they go well in Brisbane Penants so it should be a decent course. It's probably on par with courses like Virginia, a very good members course but not quite of championship quality. I think Brisbane only has a couple of real top courses (Royal Queensland and Indoorapilly). If you have the time to head south the gold coast has a squillion courses that will blow you away.
It's certainly a well known track and I think they go well in Brisbane Penants so it should be a decent course. It's probably on par with courses like Virginia, a very good members course but not quite of championship quality. I've played Virginia a few times, it's an Ok track but I was told that Nudgee is better. I think that Greg Norman was the club champ at Virginia back in the early seventies. I'm sure I saw his name on the club champions board.
The only other course I have played over there was the Hyatt Regency Coolum.
Now that is one very nice golf course. :)

its got to be the guy that takes 15 or so practise swings then lashes at the ball and hit it 20 yards
or somebody that wears sunglasses when its not even sunny
What equipment, apparel, etc. makes you prejudge someone as a chopper?
For me, it's the following...
Muddy as hell saddle shoes
Pleather bag with tubes for every club
Stuffed animal head covers
More than 1 bag tag
Clones
Feel free to add to the list since it's far from being complete.
yea classic signs of a hack

Only ever seen it on tv, but Coolum would make my top 5 courses in Australia I want to play. Absoutely magnificent layout and condition. The ridiculous thing about Coolum is that if you live near there it costs less than a grand to be a member if something I read in a golf mag was correct. I read it with my own eyes but still couldn't believe it.
4 or more poor practice swings (usually followed by a completely different swing over the ball)
First one I actually agree with
Definitely working on being able to get my line, walk up, address the ball and hit it dead down the middle. Too much time on the tee before swinging doesnt seem to be very beneficial.

- Guys with a BIG red 'T' on their golf ball (oh wait, thats me) ;)
the best way to fix ball marks is not to make them. that's why i don't.
very confused.
How do you keep from making ball marks from 150 yards out ?
A chopper is anyone who is so weak fuking minded that seeing someone mark their ball with a tee bothers them.
A chopper is so fuking gay that seeing another man in socks above the ankles bothers him because he fears popping a chub.
A chopper is someone stupid enough to carry their bag when its 105* out when instead they could be pulling it on a nice easy cart. They would rather have a giant sweat stained back and look like a fuking douche in the clubhouse after.
I would rather golf with a chopper any day than a fuking poser.
Heh.
Just replace 'chopper' with 'egomaniac'....except in the last sentence, of course.

Lack of etiquette. Good players almost always have impeccable etiquette, bad players rarely do.
