The Taylormade R9: Gay or Legit?

The gimmicky Taylormade R9 allows golfers to change loft, lie and close or open the face. Is it too gimmicky? Speak out GR . . . . .

Worth a try.
All the other vendors are doing it.
I wonder what's the range is for the loft?
I wonder if they're gonna make 460cc version?

every driver tm puts out is gay. there will be an r11 out in 2 months. oh, & then they'll of course release the r11tp which will be $100 more. that brand is a pseud.

Only $100 more. Here in Oz the TP versions are generally in the vicinity of $300 more. But for that you supposedly get a shaft upgrade. You certainly get a shaft up somewhere if you buy one.

I wonder if you can crank the loft all the way up to 16* and does it have a retractable shaft on it so that you can shorten the shaft to 7 wood length and convert it into a Thriver?

I thought I was going to buy a few new clubs but...I decided on something else.

Gay. Its just another sh** ass driver that they mass produce. They havent made a decent driver in the past say 5 or so years.

There's a rumor on GolfWRX that the R9 Max is out.
It's a 460cc R9, being offered only in Japan.
They say there's more range of adjustability via the hosel.

Iv'e learned that its not even worth it. There are times where I will though, this isnt one of them. I just hate taylormade.

I have owned a few Taylormade drivers, and whilst they were ok IMO they were nothing special. The 2 best drivers I have used have been produced by smaller although not unknown companies. Nickent and Tour edge. Note that in Australia those two manufactures are pretty unknown. Every second golfer I see these days here in Oz has a taylormade in the bag. Some guys have the whole bag. I think the reason for this is the obviously huge advertising budget that Taylormade have.

the only exception is the TM TP BURNER... nothing adjustable and as far as i can tell it's a legit driver.... but one is suspect if they bag anything TM.

fairy tink my arse, the 905 series produce a solid pop. both feel & sound. you need to find the middle of the face omen :) it sounds better.

The new R9 is overrated and a bit janky. I got to personally hit the R9 3 days before release and I stroked 3 different lofts of 3 different drivers and caused the poor brand new R9 to rattle like a baby toy . Yes my my friend they all rattled after I was done with the 3 contestants of the Taylormade family. I would suggest that you try the new Nike Dynamo, or the new Cleveland Monster, even the new Adams Speedline is a good pick. The R9 is a No go team for me. The best driver made bye Taylormade is either the old R580, or the recently new CGBmax driver. But then again this is only my opinion

Taylormade has made tons of money out of vulnerable choppers who keep changing their drivers every year in pursuit of a perfect one.. like me ?

That would be an Outlandish claim to say I caved the face in ....But then again I hear you smell like Kangaroo pooh when its sunny out. And you take mulligans on all dogleg left holes. Call me crazy but I picture this being true.:cool:

BJ i think you misunderstood, I prefer the sound the titleist makes, its not some gay nasty tinky sound.... like say the callaways, tm's, pings, etc.... in fact Titleist and the TM TP Burner are the only drivers i seem to like. with a strong preference for titleist.

I've played a few rounds now with the R and a Fuji Motore. It doesn't get the roll the D3 with the Rombax get, but overall it may be my favorite combo ever. Right now I'd rather play with the R. I'm seriously thinking of reshafting the old 983K.

now that ive hit the r9 i will comment... nice idea... customization of face angle (open or closed) but a terrible feeling driver... i havent really like TM drivers since my original r7 tp... they just didnt feel right to me after that one....

I fear some Tall poppy syndrome has crept into this thread.
I now own R9 Driver and 3 wood and only after trialling and comparing.
My swing speed is medium and found, once dialled in ( you have to be flexible, and adjust to the club) Both gave me the best feel and distance.
So , yes, maybe every Tom dick and harry has them, and their marketing is second to none, but you dont mix it with the with the big boys if you have a mediocre product.

Not so much gay but it involves too much farting about. I have just come back from a fitting session that took just under 2 hours. Under the expert eye of my club pro we arrived at a driver that fitted me like a comfy pair of carpet slippers. A ping G15 12 degree in regular. Every shot straight or with a little draw. Lovely (and not gay in the slightest, unlike the Under Armour compression long johns I also bought.:D )

I,m going with gimmicky. I bought the Limited 3 interchangable shafts ozik, fuji, diamana I could only hit the fuji it was heavier, and it felt horrible with slight distance loss, over my than r7 tp 425 9.5 rombax stiff, great club, which I still have, wont sell. The tour burner tp with a rombax I currently bag is a very workable, or straight club, hard to keep, from working the ball, its so easy. I,m sure theres longer, easier, straighter. So the R9 ,IS GAYCRAP.Thats is probably why I see alot of tour burners still being played. Sooner I,m no long ball hitter, but when I hit the screws, usually when my foursome on the first tee bets me you cant hit him, at a flat goat track 295 to the green, I drive the fringe 290 routinely, There done putting, one guy was on his cell phone, recently hes pickin up his ball. For a keg of blue moon beer 150.00 us and come close a few more times.

The trouble is that in a 7 month delay, Taylormade will have usually launched 5 new latest/greatest "upgraded" lines of clubs.......

I still don't get how you can change loft without 'bending' the line of the shaft somehow... and, technically, if you 'open' the face, all you have to do is hold the club with the label further left and you close it again.. and the inverse.. what can you do with an adjustable hosel that you can't do by holding the grip in a different spot?

In the good old days, players would 'open or close' the face WITH THEIR HANDS BY REGRIPPING... who needs a freakin' adjustable hosel?

still don't get the loft thing.

I agree the hosel turn could be just as easily turned in the hand but there is something in the way the head is weighted and naturally sits at address. I'd like to know from tmade themselves on this issue.

7 months on and the R9 is still as gay as ever. I actually think these adjustable drivers do more harm than good. Thhey provide the temptation of constantly tweeking them every time you have an off day, meaning you can never really settle into a consistent rhythm with the driver. Personally I think the way to go is just get a driver properly fitted, and don't touch it again, unless your results over a long period suggest you need some adjustments like a shaft change. But going from open to closed then back to open face, or changing the loft up and down, or even moving the weights around, is golfing hari kari IMO.

lol.... odd how opinions change, after i got fit by TM i didnt really care what it felt like just so long as it helped me... in the end i thought it felt pretty good anyways, i found that if the weight was on the heel or toe it feels a ton different than weighted neutrally, and TM fitted to neutral weighting...

just interesting to me...

I think the new fitting options are great if you have a launch monitor and a good club fitter. Just changing the shaft, lie, loft, ect. on the range without hard data is somewhat of a joke. I doubt tour pro's are going to need this flexibility because every club they get is fitted there is no to little need to change it. If there is you just have the tour van build you another. While the weekend warrior hack that is getting lessons and changing their swing has the ability to start with a driver that is reasonable fit to their swing and change it as they get better.

While I'm not a fan of TM I can see the benefit for the ability to change these aspects of the club and have witnessed a good fitter get better results by changing the characteristic of the club. Especially the amount the club is open or closed.

There are a few guys in my regular group game that always seem to have the latest Taylormade products. One guy has the new R9 and he doesn't hit it any better than his R7 Limited (which I didn't think he hit well at all). The other guy has the new R9 TP irons. Really, the only difference in any of these irons is inside the cavity. Personally, I think the R7 TP irons look better than the R9 TP.

But the Ping eye2 irons are better than all of them right? I don't know what the big deal with TM is, every other player on the course has a Burner or an r7 or r9...I tried hitting all of them and my g10 is far and away the best driver for me personally

The new R9 TP irons would have to be the ugliest, hackerest looking clubs ever to wear the TP badge. The R7 TP was pushing it right to the limit, but the R9 has gone right over the edge. I cannot imagine a single TM tour player bagging these monstrosities, unless you include front bums and guys on the colostomy bag tour, who are probably lining up to get their hands on these shovels. Any guy from the regular PGA Tour who turned up on the first tee with a set of these would be the laughing stock of the tour and would seriously struggle to get a practice round with other players.

when you put them down on the ground at address, it's hard to tell the diff between these and previous models.

as to size, I was on a range recently and put an R7 TP iron down next to my Adams Idea Pro Forged ... the R7 was smaller. And the R9 is smaller than THAT.

Very pro looking, if you keep your eyes averted from the back of the clubhead.

I agree with summations of how they look at address, but the fact is you can't go 18 holes with them in the bag without viewing the back of the clubhead. And as we all know on GR, how they look in the bag is THE most important factor in deciding what to bag. Maybe you could get head covers for them, but as we also know on GR, headcovers on irons is the number 1 b!tchmove.
