Aerosmith is playing on Maui tomorrow night...their manager called me yesterday and my wife and i took out Tom Hamilton and Joe Perry and their wives on our private snorkel tour....We just got the call for two front row tix and VIP backstage passes for tomorrow night...woohoo! Trying to get Hamilton (bass player) to come play MCC with me I heard he's a scratcher golfer...

I can't stand Aerosmith musically  ... but ... that all sounds pretty cool!

It's funny, I've never really been into them either personally, I mean they're good, I just don't really listen to their music unless like a song comes on the radio, but I have to acknowledge that they are legendary in the rock world....I took out Eddie and Alex Van Halen last year and I was f ucking giddy....I really had to maintain my cool in their presence....Eddie ended up signing my guitar to my kids and I got a picture with the two of them...but with Aerosmith I'm not nearly as excited...Gonna have Joe Perry sign my Gibson SG though, I can't have his signature taint my Van Halen guitar..even though it's a piece of **** hundred dollar Peavy, it's now absolutely priceless to me

So what exactly do you do for a living there mental? Snorkel guide? Snorkel Bob?

Personally I think their music sux shite big time. I remember a guy I knew when I was a kid and we were both kind of head bangers into non mainstream, heavy rock type music and he mentioned to me that there was this new cool band named Aerosmith. Naturally I was interested to hear them and maybe buy their album. The first song I heard was that lame, abysmal, pathetic, gay, glam rock POS 'Love in an Elevator'. Need I say more?

New band with "Love in an Elevator"...please, they had already been pumping out hit albums for 13 years by the time that song came out....go check out their shi t from the late 70's and I guarantee you won't think they are quite as lame....but yeah anything post late-80's was shite as was the case with many bands...The Police, Van Halen, Metallica, to name a few...all those bands's "old shite" was way way better

Yeah you're right but their real early stuff just wasn't on the radar at the time. When that BS song came out along with the equally bad album they became more mainstream. Peddling shite like that meant I was scarred for life and there was no way I was going back to check their early stuff.
It's a bit like Iggy Pop. Many of us as kids hadn't heard of him until he released that lame ass song "I'm a real wild child" about 1986 but when I went back and discovered his early stuff with The Stooges, man I was hooked! :D

Aerosmith rocks!! You are so lucky! Don't pay any attention to Kiwi, he apparently has not taste in music. I thought the tour was suspended until Steven Tyler got better. Is he back with them now?

As I said I'm no fan but if I met them and hosted them like Mentaloaf is doing I would probably change my mind. I agree that would be pretty awesome.

I saw Aerosmith in concert with the Cult when I was in10th grade. Good show...I think Steven Tyler shoved a microphone up his a$$.

Very Cool! So you're Sage? Snorkeling is the first thing my wife and I fell in love with for obvious reasons. Our first trip there we did the Molokini trip but found that we could see just as much right out off the beach in front of our condo in Kaanapali. I would like to try something different so ya we'll give a ring! Hey I'll treat you to golf if we can get your discount! wink wink!

This is a show they HAVE to do. They canceled a show last year i think it was a judge ordered them to do it. From what I heard he also put a footnote to the court order that they have to do the show and they can't suck! Paraphrasing of course but I thought that was pretty funny....I hope Steven gets his shite back together soon....

The Cult are/were awesome. You could almost interchange the lead singers and no one would notice.

You mean Blue Oyster Cult? The only song I hear by them now is Don't fear the Reaper and all I hear is COW BELL! That damn SNL bit they did a long time ago ruined it for me......

No just plain old The Cult. Originally Southern Death Cult, then Southern Cult (or was it Death Cult?) then plain old The Cult. British band.

Molokini doesn't seem to be what it once was. Although it sounds as though you caught it on an unusual day. That said, Black Rock at the end of Kaanapali is one of the better accessible spots anywhere, unless they have a sewage spill in the area.
It sounds as though MO's MO is to take people to the area off the Makena courses, one of my favorite venues in the Islands. It is ground zero for turtles. Clint Eastwood bought right off the ocean there.

WEll, went to the show last night and they absolutely blew the phucking roof off the place...I was never really a big fan but I'll tell you what, Steven Tyler is a phucking animal...that guy is amazing on stage...complete command of his voice, his body, the crowd, a true rock star legend. They were REALLY good, and I was pretty skeptical going in. Awesome f ucking show. They actually ended up playing a lot of really blues/rock...none of the pop shite like their soundtracks or anything...just really good driving blues/rock, they sounded great. And I can't stress enough how much fun it is to watch Steven Tyler on stage...there just is no Aerosmith without him...

The Cult rules!! Ian Astbury ended up singing for The Doors in the place of Jim Morrison...Morrison is an icon and a great songwriter, but Ian Astbury formerly of The Cult sings phucking circles around JM!

The reef at Molokini has been shredded to bits by snorkel boats anchoring out there over the last 30 years. The state finally installed some mooring buoys but it's too late. Also they outlawed feeding the fish so it kind of threw off the whole eco system. Molokini sucks for snorkeling...a cool place to go but not the best underwater scenery. Don't get fooled into paying for a tour out there, there is world class snorkeling steps away from your rental car at a handful of spots in Wailea/Makena (that is also where I do my tours).
I had a family of 3 out with me yesterday and we were surrounded by about 30 dolphins and they wouldn't leave us alone for about 30 mintues...it was pretty awesome but actually kinda spooky...they are pretty fricking big fish to be darting all around you. I'm going to upload the video I took to youtube and I'll post it on here a little later.
Clint Eastwood lives right next to Palauea (White Rock) Beach in Makena. Really good snorkeling right in front. Tiger Woods owns a giant mansion right next to Makena Landing, I've driven by a lot, there is always someone working on it it seems like...
And of course you also have right there the Wailea Gold, Emerald, and Blue courses, and the Makena North and South Courses all within about a 5 minute drive from each other

Love to see the video. The little ones are pretty funny. A few months back near Shipwreck on Kauai, a small pod stayed around us out in small surf. A couple of the young did a great job entertaiing us.
That is a great area. I'm not a snorkler, typically, but when friends come in if we're on that island I'll look you up.

Kiwi is right. I just saw "the Cult"...their big song I remember was "Fire Woman".
That same year I saw Motley Crue with Faster Pu_ssycat, and AC/DC with...I can't remember...maybe Skid Row...Anyway the AC/DC show was probably the best concert Ive ever seen. They had just come out with "Thunderstruck."

Around 1990 or 1991 I saw AC/DC. The Black Crowes was the opening act for some reason, before anyone outside of the Southern Blues community heard of them.
AC/DC was insane back then, but nowadays I'd much rather go to a Black Crowes concert.
Worst concert I ever saw was Smashing Pumpkins, right before their implosion. I think they resented their fans and how mainstream their music had become. Billy Corgan pretty much berated the audience and sat on a chair trying to play guitar.

Some bands are great in concert and others, whilst they have great songs, are only so so live. Two bands that spring to mind are U2 and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I'm only so so towards U2 musically but I've seen them twice in concert and boy did they rock the joint. RHCP on the other hand would be one of my favourite bands musically since the late 80's but I've seen them twice in concert and both times they sucked. Seemed like they were just going through the motions and would rather be someplace else. Really disappointing. It's obvious that the frontman Keidis doesn't get on with the guitarist and bassist anymore and there is no on stage chemistry. The guitarist and bassist obviously were really getting off jamming together and looked like a pair of dicks. They may as well have been jamming together in their basement. Keidis looks short, pudgy and almost like a dwarf on stage. The drummer, who probably has the lowest public profile was the only one who had any semblance of cool.
Another band that really knows how to rock the joint is Rage Against the Machine. I've seen them twice too and both times they blew the roof off the stadium. In a word AWESOME!!!

I saw RHCP back around 1995 and they were assskicking superstars.
Nine Inch Nails were awesome live.

I saw the Cult in 88 on their Electric tour and they were unreal....I was a freshman in High School and ended up going home and wrestling in bed with a hot senior chick til the wee hours...so that concert and thus that band have always had a special place in my heart just because of how that night turned out....
I have seen a fair share of big rock shows and one of the most mindblowing live shows EVER was Tool in 91...it was a festival with Stone Temple Pilots, Fishbone, Primus, and the Violent Femmes...and Tool even though they were the first to go on and nobody really knew who they were they absolutely stole the show. Even if you don't like hard rock/metal you should try to see Tool if you get a chance... sooooooo heavy I can't even stress to you how good they are live.
Another incredible show was Pearl Jam/U2 together a few years ago at Aloha Stadium...Metallica is really really good every time I've seen them (thrice) even though they have gotten extremely gay since their Black album...
One of the great ones for me too was seeing Peter Tosh at a small club by UH in Honolulu called Anna Bananas right before he died...Peter Tosh and Bob Marley pretty much define reggae so it was really cool getting to see him.
One more...and if you ever get the chance you have to check these guys out...The Radiators, I'm sure some of you have heard of them. I saw them in New Orleans at Mardi Gras in 92 and I never forgot it...then I got to see them again in San Fran in 03 and they fricking blew my mind....again. One of the best bands around I swear especially live. It's like blues/rock/funk with a New Orleans flavor and a guitarist that sounds like Eddie Van Halen on acid...it's incredible
Anyway those were my best...anyone else??

One of the best gigs I've seen lately was Iggy and the Stooges at the Sydney Big Day Out in 2006. It was there first gig in 30 or so years and they absolutely lifted the roof off. For some strange programming reason The Stooges were the second last act and the poor ol White Stripes had to try to headline the gig going on stage after them. Needless to say, the crowd was spent and the White Stripes failed miserably.
As for some old bands I've seen back in the day, an Aussie band called The Hoodoo Guru's are probably the consistently best band I've ever seen. I unfortunately missed the Black Crowes on their first Aussie tour after the release of Shake Your Moneymaker. They payed in small venuses and apprently rocked.

I think it was the Black Crowes...We must have seen part of the same tour. I used to go to concerts all the time, but its probably been 10 years since Ive been to one...Dave Matthews Band was the last one.
Bon Jovi was the worst band Ive seen live. I don't know if they sounded bad, or I didn't like their music. They had like 4 good hits, and the rest were horrible. Cinderella blew them away as the opening act.
Ive always wanted to see Pearl Jam in concert.
-
Hoodoo Gurus had some good stuff. Used to listen to them in the late 80's early 90's. Still like to listen to Magnum Cum Louder every once in a while. Did not realize they were from Australia and never got to see them live.
One of my all time favorite concerts was the first time I saw the Violent Femmes. It was amazing how great they sounded with just 3 guys on stage. Gordon Gano played acoustic guitar most of the show, Brian Ritchie played a stand up bass most of the show (but also brought out a bunch of different instruments), and Victor DeLorenzo had a drum set that consisted of a bass drum, a snare drum, a hi-hat and maybe one other cymbal. Such a simple set up, but they rocked the house.
Saw INXS a few years later. They had like 18 people on stage and sucked.

Going to see the KISS Alive 35 tour in a month or so. This will be my third time to see them live, the first being in '79, the last being the reunion tour in '96. They may not be the best musicians in the world, but they put on a fun show... and 'fess up, more of you are KISS fans that you'd like to admit.
By the way, KISS "gets it" on two fronts, and should be given credit - first, they are adamant supporters of our troops; and like a lot of immigrants, Gene Simmons is one of the most patriotic people around. Second, the current tour is the most affordably priced concert by a major rock act in years - they understand the economy is in the tank, and don't mind giving back by keeping prices down. More power to 'em!

That was a bummer when Kiss tried to go without makeup...I'm glad they trashed that idea although my favorite Kiss song came from that era, "Lick it up". Aerosmith was super expensive, I wouldn't have gone if I didn't get the free tix...the seats was sitting were like $150 and the cheapest were $60. One of the best punk bands in the world, Fugazi, plays for $5 a ticket wherever they go, it's awesome, I've seen em a couple times here. It's led by Ian, former frontman of Minor Threat...
-
I'm a huge fan of the Eagles, heard their concerts tickets go for a crapload of money.
Red Hot Chili Peppers and Queen are good too.

Wow. Now you guys are speaking my language. I'm a musician hobbiest first, golf second.
First of all, I would have sh!t my pants meeting Eddie Van Halen, my childhood hero.
Secondly, anything Aerosmith recorded after the 70s is total ass-crap.
Third, anyone who likes rock needs to immediately get The Cult's Electric album. (Think British alt-rock version of AC/DC.) One of my all-time favorite albums. Sonic Temple was great also (Their follow up to Electric around 89ish)
Fourth, I thought I was the only person ever to hear of the Hoodoo Gurus. Great band. Not much success in the states. I never knew they were Aussies.
Lastly, I saw the Black Crowes in 1990 when they first came out. They booked a club date before they broke big. They cancelled it and made it up when they were touring with Robert Plant. It was like seeing an arena band in a 1000 capacity club. To this day one of the best shows I've seen.
Good stuff guys. One of the best threads I've seen in the non-golf wasteland.
-
I never got into music and it makes me feel sad. Reading this thread made it really hit home. I think I've missed out on a whole avenue of p.ussy that might have been available.

I tried to post a photo of EVH on here but I'm too retarded...actually I consider myself pretty computer savvy, I don't know why the f uck I can't attach a pic on here, it just doesn't work for me, i don't know...The Cult Electric is the dictionary definition of Hard Rock, it is one of the best rock albums EVER
Oh and the song Aerosmith closed with was a 15 minute jam version of "Train Kept a Rollin'" and it completely changed my mind about them they are an absolutely incredible live show...and they know better than to close with a cheesy ballad from the 90's....they tore the fu cking roof off the place one of the best shows I've seen and I've seen a sh itload....
-
OK here it is...Eddie and Alex Van Halen and the guitar EVH signed for my kids...

Didn't realise there were some Guru's fans on GR. They almost single handedly kept paisley shirts cool. To Mentaloaf and HS, the Gurus absolutely rock the house down live. I've saw them 4 times during the 90's, always in smallish venues of less than 5,000, and every time it was a packed house and they went off. I agree that some of their stuff is definitely surfy rock, but they are a pretty diverse band that has lots of different influences. They always finish with 'Like Wow Wipeout' which is absolutely awesome live.

The Gurus were on virtually every Aussie surf video from the late 80's to the early 90's not necessarily cause their music is "surfy" but because like you said they phucking rocK!

If I was going to caegorise them I'd probably call them a surf/pub rock band so it's not surprising the surf videos used them.

The Cults first two albums 'Dreamtime' & 'Love' were their best IMO. Sort of weird gothic rock that rocked! Then they switched to a much more heavy metal type of sound with 'Electric' which was an awesome album and has been described as the greatest hard rock album that AC/DC never made. By the time 'Sonic Temple' came out these guys were still Ok but were getting a bit soft IMO like they'd switched to SGI irons with graphite shafts. By the time they released 'Indian' I think they were playing a full set of Adams hybrids.
As for the Hoodoo Gurus they were great Aussie rockers of the 80's & 90's. I saw them several times in the late 80's and like NAH it was always in small venues. One concert I remember in particular on a Saturday night, it was so f.ucking loud that my ears were literally still ringing on Tuesday!
Happy Times! :D

Which leads me to ask . . . . are the Wiggles still touring? My kids use to think that they were the best thing Australia ever offered to the world. They could be right.
i guess those Luciano Pavarotti concerts don't count eh?
Even as a wop, guys that are really good at singing in the shower aren't on my radar. Besides, I really doubt there would have been p.ussy there.
You hit the nail on the head...Love was a f ucking awesome album, Electric too but it was a total 180 from the "Love" sound....."She Sells Sanctuary" is like an anthem for my early teens...One of my favorite rock songs ever is "Love Removal Machine" off of Electric, and their version of Born to be Wild is WAY better than Steppenwoff's original.....kinda like how Hendrix's "all along the watchtower" is way better than Bob Dylan's original version...
I'd have to say the band that got the gayest as time went on would have to be Van Halen..their early stuff was legendary, wild, raw, driving rock/metal...then when Hagar joined they were pretty much a gay Pop band trying to produce big selling singles to the masses...what a bummer because they were sooo good (think Van Halen I, Women and Children First, Fair Warning...even 1984)
But my all time favorite? "Fruit Salad" by The Wiggles...(or is it Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto by Styx?)
Im kind of a music nut myself. One time, someone asked me who I liked better: Michael McDonald, Steve Winwood, or Christopher Cross? I couldn't sleep for two days.
Bon Jovi was the worst band Ive seen live. I don't know if they sounded bad, or I didn't like their music. They had like 4 good hits, and the rest were horrible.
I hear you there Purist. When I was 18 I went and saw them in concert only because my girlfriend wanted to go and I went as a sort of escort as I didn't want her and her friends going on their own knowing the bogun types that this concert would attract. What a pile of shite. Easily the worst concert I have ever been to. It was two hours of pure torture but probably worth it for the brownie points I earned!

You must be refering to the Slippery When Wet tour Kiwi. I saw the Australian leg of the tour in Sydney. A mate got tickets and gave me a freeby, so we ventured down to the big smoke for a night. The concert was the worst I've ever seen or heard. Richie Sambora must be the most overrated guitarist that's ever lived, he tried to come out for a solo to give th band a break, but it lasted less than two minutes before the fans started booing and the rst of the band came back on. It didn't help that we were in the nose bleed seats. Directly behind us was the brick wall.
The only saving grace was that outisde before the concert started a complete stranger, who also happened to be a hot blonde, came up to me out of the blue and showed me her secret handshake, which ended with her tongue down my throat. Unfortunately she didn't hang around, and was off her chops, so nothing eventuated but still a highlight of the night.
But boy did Bon Jovi suck arse.

Aerosmith I like so much. Pretty cool! LOL

B-52's
Thought I'd bump this music thread as I just went and saw the B-52's in Auckland at a local vineyard. Man they still know how to rock the party. They saved their two best songs for the encore, Planet Claire & Rock Lobster. Man I was sore the next day. Didn't realise that pogo'ing took so much energy. Seemed easy with a belly full of grog after an afternoon in the sun. :D
The Proclaimers were there too. They played their ONE famous song (500 miles) and one other lamea$$ effort that I knew. The rest of their songs were pretty boring, nondescript bollocks but they were Ok for a warm up act.

Not half as sore as the sheep you visited on the walk home I'd bet.
