Was I too hard on FamousDB?
I'm thinking I shouldn't have been so hard on our newbee friend. I hope I didn't scare him off. He's probably still sleepy night night spooning his mother right now after a hard day at the GR.
Either way, I won't be so mean from now on. I just take offense to some one busting down the GR door to proclaim that he's gods gift to the golf world and the GR.......

If he hangs around i think he could be a great addition, then again if he cant take the little bit of shite you gave him he probably hasnt got the balls to stick it anyway.
Carry on
Edgey

If he's been doing reviews on GR for years and just now was able to jump into the forum, he never would have had the balls to make it very far. Worry about more important things. Like whether Hillary Clinton is eating her corn.

I'm thinking he's an alias... Has anyone checked him out.. He does have the makings of a great.. But personally I think he's gonna burn out.. Too much too soon..

Jealousy will get you nowhere. The only thing likely to come from you and scare me would be a video of your golf game. It sounds like you know a great deal about taboo mother/son relationships but I'll let you keep that in the closet. Hit 'em well.

FamousDavis! My new BFF! How are you? I trust you slept well after a long day yesterday. The first day is always the hardest. A good nights sleep always takes the edge off of things. You'll get use to it though. With the beating I gave you yesterday I would imagine you're feeling a little run down so take it slow. Baby steps you know!
Now, let's start with that swing video everyone's dying to see! I'm on the edge of my seat with anticipation! We all watch a lot of golf on tv and see alot of pros hack their way though tournaments. You know that guy Tiger and all those other choppers but we can get into that later.... Now if you could post a swing video of that sweettricklingwatersmoothneveradoubtdamnI'mgood stroke so maybe, and I mean just maybe! we could gain some glimmer of hope of finding the true utopia of that of the golf swing. I don't just ask this of for my benefit alone. Oh Geezus God! that would be selfish! I ask this on behalf of me and my GR brothers who most humbly ask if you Famous, could help us with the secret of that of the golf swing..........May I please....bow to my master......
-
FD -- my money's on mad riffing skills but mediocre golfing ones, but you can always post an impressive swing vid to prove me wrong.. but you've got what it takes to exchange ripostes here, sans doute..
skilled bellicosity with unskilled golfosity, I need not even say, puts you square in the middle of the most qualified and comfortable long term GR members' ranks.. :-)

LarryRSVP IS running out of golf deities to idolize and quote. FamousDave might be the next! If that doesn't pan out, I don't think Larr had been through a Dana Quigley phase yet.

I don't have a swing video. Well, unless you're talking about the one I made with my ex high school girlfriend and her current husband that likes to watch. Now, gettting back to golf....I find it amusing that you people doubt my golfing prowess. In addition, I don't understand why all of you don't play Ping Eye 2 irons. It makes no sense to play modern clubs that are stronger lofted because now you have to fill in the gaps with, well, gap wedges. My Ping Eye 2 PW is 50.7 degrees. It's deadly from 110 yards. I stiff it from all over.

Hey FamousDB! I'd bet swing video is a doozy! I can just picture you in sheep costume and the husband as a Shepard. You know with the tall boots and all wink wink... Now getting back to golf...I don't doubt your prowess for a second. I was hoping you could present your golf swing as an instructional video with some naration. Something to help us with our chopperesk swings. Is that something you might grace us with soon?

That's what I was talking about. You certainly have a video camera if your giving golf instruction. Anyone that is serious about golf has a video of their swing. Anyone that is serious about golf can point out flaws and tendencies about their swing. Until I see your swing I would assume you are a hacker.

I predict FamousDavis will remain both a noun and a verb on GR long after the namesake is gone, which ought to be in around 15 minutes.

This is harder than I thought. I'm trying to explain to all of you that my swing teaching methods are all verbal. I don't do video and I don't use balloons or hula hoops to teach. My teaching is very similar to Harvey Penick. In fact, I'm considering writing my own book. It will be called "FamousDavis' little blue book. It should be a good read because I'll have sort of a intermission section in the middle with nude photos.
Dude, I don't care if you think I'm a hack. I know I'd school you on the course and leave you on the 12th tee asking for your mommy.
"Anyone that is serious about golf has a video of their swing"??? Um, I would suggest that most really good golfers don't have a video of their swing. The guys I play with are all good and none of us talk about watching ourselves on video. I think a more correct statement is that people with handicaps in the teens and spend a fortune on equipment are more likely to have a swing video. Go ahead and watch yourself swing...just don't forget the tissue paper to clean up your ejaculate.

I agree. I saw my swing on video about this time last year and spent 8 months in a funk. I even resorted to taking a lesson (which I am strongly against) which further jacked up my swing. I have almost returned to my summer 2008 level of play.
I'm from the old school. I believe you will be better off figuring out the swing by digging it out of the dirt. Your breakthroughs will be self-taught and you will know your swing 100%. I personally LOL at the people I see taking lessons at the range. Lessons speak to desperation, failure, and a general lack of belief in yourself. It's not that I believe everyone who takes lessons is a failure per se, it's just that I have a very hard time respecting them on a personal level.

Yep! I ended up totally out of wack when I started videoing my swing. Got too analytical about positions, got too mechanical and lost all my feel. Took the $100 lesson and it helped a little but I'm doing it on my own again with alot better results.

It's been proven lack of respect for others comes from a lack of respect for oneself. Your complete failure with lessons may partially explain this.

You must be feeling a little c_unty today...
Anyway, I have been trying to clean up my swing from video for a few months now. Its easy to spot the mistakes in your swing, but changing them is a biatch. I would make what "felt" like a huge change in my swing, and then I would watch it on video and it would look almost exactly the same as before. It takes a big commitment to change your swing...Even subtle changes (visually speaking) feel completely awkward and uncomfortable.

Not just a little. Closer to Queen Latifah. I'll bet she's got a big one.
Tiger's said at this stage of his life, he'll typically keep a change related swing thought for over a year.
And as Poe might corroborate, swing flaws are often physically based so unless you address strength and flexibility, you might not be able to make the change. I have a TPI program that's been great.
Unfortunately I've quit golf for a while.

To be fair, mine was part of an iron fitting, not a lesson. Something about viewing my impact position and tempo to help determine what shaft I should be using. I should have never watched that video.

I hear you there Purist, same here. I overswing at the top and the club goes way past parallel which looks ridiculous on video and affects my consistency so I try to do drills to shorten the backswing. But every time I watch the video and swing naturally it is exactly the same.

I sure your mental image of a what you thought was a good looking swing was crushed when you saw your flawed moves on video. I akin seeing your swing on video to hearing your recorded voice for the first time. It's often different than your impression or mental image.
The fact that you recognize a flaw and are not willing to ask for help speaks more of your character than of others that have taken professional lessons.
I see many players that can score but I know that their move is flawed. You can even see them at the tour level. Many swing flaws do create power leaks or resistance in the body and can cause physical injury. Tennis elbow, lower back problems etc. are often a side effect of improper movement. I've watched players in my league stop playing due to injury and it was very predictable. Avoidance of injury alone is a strong reason to learn to swing the club properly.

I've found TPI pretty mind opening. You still doing that?
-
I'm still doing a program from Core Performance website. It's based on the same theories as TPI. I've also done Cook's Athletic Body in Balance screening by trainer that specializes in functional movement. It was not golf specific but it was very informative. I did identify some weaknesses and have trained to overcome them. Most of them came from on old injury. I had a compound femur fracture in '92 and I spent almost a full year on crutches. My left leg and specifically my left glut atrophies quickly if it's not exercised regularly. It's been about a year and I should get back to him and do another screening. I have also added some kettle bell exercises to my routine. Unfortunately between work and golf in the summer my exercise gets the short end of the stick. This is about the time where I have to get back into exercising or I will become a drunk, lazy, fat arse.
I still think it is interesting to hear peoples impression of being fit. It rarely has any real analysis other than strength and looks. Muscular balance and movement are still grossly overlooked by most training programs. I finding out that as I age proper movement is very important.

I agree that as I get older movements can become irregular if I'm not getting enough fiber.
Did you reach pro standards according to TPI?
-
Like I said, I didn't take do my assessment from TPI but from a functional trainer. From what I've been told, most of the functional screening in TPI is based on cook's theories. Cook's screening is very comprehensive and at the time I took the screening the most qualified functional trainer that I could find was not in the TPI program. He used to be a functional movement/strength trainer for Team Quest, Randy Quarter of MMA's gym, before he went out on his own. He rattled off some of his students in the MMA but I'm not into it and the names went in one ear and out the other. He's also trained some of the trail blazers. He could kick my arse with a 8lb medicine ball, a couple of physio bands, and a speed ladder. I went this direction because I wanted an off season break from golf and I figured strength training was a good way to go.
I should look into the TPI certified trainers again. I know they are adding trainers all the time.

Pretty dead on, minus the ad hominem character attack.
I hated my backswing and the amount of lateral movement. Truly shocking to see how flat and inside I was taking it back. I then picked the club almost straight up to finish the swing and had a pseudo OTT move to start the downswing. I say pseudo because I pretty much had to change the plane based on how flat and inside I started the swing. I am basically a reverse-Furyk.
Trying to fix the takeaway and backswing killed my full swing. Now I'm back to the old way and playing solid again.

I'd somehow thought TPI preceeded Cooks for you. One of the great things about TPI is their measuring of your capability and progress which you can see against the tour average. And you can build strength while making sure you retain flexibility.
If you really want to do TPI and there's not a trainer in your area, I'd still consider traveling to form a program, maybe train with the guy once or twice, and then you're good to go. All of the exercises are on video on the TPI website. The trainers tell you they need to stay involved to make sure you're doing it correctly, but that isn't really true.
You do however need to get measured occasionally so you know how to balance strength and flexibility.

There is a TPI trainer or two. One works with the geriatrics here in Lake Oswego (probably a similar community to lorries RSF community) and the other I talked with was OK but not exactly an expert. I spent a couple of months interviewing people. My first exposure to functional training was through TPI. I read one of their book recomendations and started going to that gyms website and haven't been back to TPI. Here's the link Core Performance. I like the fact that I could get the workouts on my iphone. No printing, etc. The trainer I was working with gave me some supplemental exercises for my weaknesses. The guy I worked with wanted to see me at minimum monthly but I soon realized that he was hungry enough to dictate my preferred schedule.
My biggest weakness is the love of the booze. If I could stop drinking the vino, vodka and/or whiskey I'm sure I could loose the last 10 lbs easily and probably have more endurance and get bigger strength gains. But I love the booze so I live in mediocrity.

My downfall is clearly p.ussy. Maybe I need to just get married and then numb out like everyone else. Maybe go through a few of them and just keep dividing what I have by two until I have to move to the midwest to afford to live. What a nightmare that would be. Eventually get too old and decrepid for dirty deeds, get a beagle and try and move whatever body I have left around a golf course to get away from my then wife who I wouldn't be able to afford to divorce.
Which brings me to my point. TPI is utilized more by old farts with money than golf studs. Injuries, declining skills combined with disposable income. College golfers, top amatuers and pros often use it but they form a minority. So don't necessarily be dissuaded. The TPI system works well no matter and doesn't really care whether you're young or old, gay or straight, hung well or German, etc, etc.
Of course I'm lifetime banned from Pillowtalk after my Ben Hogan assault.
I may go try to track down that thread...
I got a ban once just for calling Vijay a cheat. And calling Annika a front-bum hacker who has no business being at the back tees didn't go down too well with the locals either.
And on your advice I once launched a tirade against Hogan for being such a prick off the course and got an almost immediate PM from one of the mods. I think I can still log in under my most recent name so I might to track down your Hogan thread.
