Quick Newbie Question re: Clubs

Hello. Thanks for reading.

I'm sure there are hundreds of posts like these but I 'm terrible w/ searches :P

Anyways. I've played maybe 6-7 times. Love the game.

Too keep it short I've complied a bag'o'clubs on the cheap......

420cc 10* Driver - Pro-Kennex
3-wood Spalding Executive (I also have the 1-4-5 & all the irons)
"Hybrid" 18* some cheap-o brand. graphite shaft....I really like this club.

5-9 Titleist Acushnet

Spalding PW

Pine Meadow Putter ....paid more for it than all the other clubs combined. :)


Here's the question.

Should I stick with what I have for now? Or buy a matching set of clubs? (found a nice set of Hippo brand for $140 on Buy)

I can tell I'm going to be a regular player...........

Any help or tips for a new player ?

Keep the clubs for awhile until you get better and then buy some brand name club like Callaway or Ping on Ebay. On another note, don't play early in the morning. I can't stand it when my low handicap buddies and I are having a nice morning round and some hack who's barely new to the game is taking forever on the course. These people drive me crazy. They talk when they should be hitting, they don't bring several clubs to their ball when using a cart and, worst of all, I have to actually watch their dreadful swings. Stick to the little 9-hole courses for now or play very late in the afternoon. Good players like myself don't need the aggrevation of showing a newbie the proper way to keep up. Now, be gone with you.

Aside of the advice to buy Callaway or PING, I agree with this post.

Stick with what you have got. There is no need to get a matching set and in the Hippos you wouldn't be gaining anything on the clubs you currently have. I would just keep playing, learning and improving with what you have and when you are ready to upgrade shop around on E-Bay for good quality second hand clubs or keep your eyes open for sales on end of season lines that are being discontinued.

Go buy Mizuno blades immediately....

as far as those guys' advice goes about playing in the morning, one thing you need to do is learn about letting people play through, picking up your ball and moving on at certain times. Just be aware of other players behind and in front of you. FD was being kind of a dick with his post but he's right....just be aware and learn when to pick up your ball after your 10th stroke on the par 3...let guys behind you play through if you ever see them waiting, stuff like that.

Oh and also, most good players will usually eat sunflower seeds while playing...especially on and around the greens. They are a delicious, healthy treat and you can just leave the seed shells on the green as it's not littering because they're biodegradable. Ive seen guys like Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson and Stuart Appleby eating sunflower seed all the time so they must make you better!

Enjoy the game...one more thing, there is a really good teacher on here named Larry...go look up all his posts on here and follow them to a "T" and guaranteed your game will improve drastically

Great advice everyone! I think the only thing that was left out was......
AIMING FLUID....This liquid gold will help you fire right at pins, cure the yips and help you put that over the water shot right out of your mind.
And remember, If one is good, two is better....
