practice golf balls, backyard "safe"

What's better for practice golf balls: whiffle plastic or foam?
For backyard use with long irons (to keep it low, under the fence)

Wiffle will break, foam go too far. It's a dilemma.

Get the "almost golf" balls and a cheap net. That's my garage set up. The "almost golf"balls are firm enough to give you some feedback, but soft enough that you won't need a heavy duty net. They would definately not be contained in the yard but that's the dilemma HB was referring to. If you really want ball flight info, get your cheap ass to the range.

yep. esp. with my 1-iron thin shots them wiffles get crushed, in a wasteful way

it's the time. and I do goto the range, but I gotta look for a grass range. them astro turf on concrete gives me delusion that I can hit well.

occasional 30 min backyard "practice" -- with ale -- feels better than nothing. extra fun when there are guests.

I'm just messin with ya man. Seriously though, the "almost golf" balls and a net is the way to go.

I don't know about long irons but I chip almost balls to my dog. They are good. I've skulled a few into windows and haven't broken any yet.

Yeah, you can really blast those foam balls. I can hit full swing wedges-8iron into my trees and usually get a rejection...the lower lofted the iron the greater the leaf penetration power. I will occasionally blast a 3iron shot off my shed...no damage to shed yet, but watch out for hot ricochets.

I pretty much stick to chipping and mirror work (check setup, top, follow thru, etc.)...I have an old mirror I keep leaned up against the fence. I have had a few power lob shots that have flown on me, but no damage yet.
