forged blades, who here plays with them?
which set looks the coolest? For me, it would be Titleist 690.MBs.

I'd take the 690MBs over those anyday...

It's not just the size of the heads, it's the amount of writing on the heads. That Nicklaus one just looks cluttered. The Titleist looks simple & beautiful.

Spookily,I own both sets.The 690s are not the prettiest clubs by any stretch,the CG1s are far nicer looking.Each to their own I suppose,but I have always thought the 690s to be quite unnattractive,the heads are huge.but one persons beauty is anothers ugly.I agree,the Muirfields would have looked very special just blank,in fact they did make a set with just 'custom' on the back,nothing else.These were what Nicklaus used to win the 86 Masters.I still they look good enough even with the writing

I played Kro-flites (1-PW) and Golden Bears (3-PW). The GB's sweet spot was about the size of dime and was located off center, in towards the hosel. At one point I could hit the 1i on the KF's. I think about them occasionally, but only occasionally.

I played the 690.mb for 2 years, and loved them. I then switched to shovels and loved them at first, but have really grown sick of the look of these bohemiths. My new set of sticks should be here Tuesday. Titleist 690.cb, I decided to go with the cavity this time for a little more help on the stinky ones. They have the same offset, specs and appearance from the top as the MB.s. I will never again stray from classic look forged clubs.

I play Cleveland CG1's, and I love them. Theres nothing like hitting a forged blade on the sweet spot. I also like them for hooking the ball around trees when I hit my ball into them (all too often)

i really like forged blades (and wish PING made some) but the coolest blades forged or not are the PING S59's (i'm thinking about getting some S59's or i3 blades) but the best forged blades are either the Mizuno MP37's (i think) or the Cleveland TA-1's (gunmetal) are the best forged blades

I have Mizuno MP-32's and they're pinseekers in every club when you get used to them. The PW looks fierce round however, that would be my only complaint

I think the MP-32 hosels look rather thick and 1020 carbon steel may be a bit soft over time. Prepare to have the grooves reshaped fairly often.

If you are running blades and don't have the grooves massaged periodically you are using less than perfect clubs... but that goes without saying for most irons.

Yet you can still spin a ball with no brooves at all,in fact,unless you are playing from rough,grooves do little or nothing,they are designed to remove dirt and moisture.Frankly,for most of us,you don't need to get to worked up about grooves,certainly not to a fanatical 'much be razor sharp all the time' sort of thing.I am sure that some guys do diy botch jobs and just do more damage.

Gunmetal cg1's and Macgregor V.I.Ps are by far my favorites

I had a 690.MB 4-irron in S300...was surprisingly fun..."easy"... to hit with.

The 32's aren't cavity backs really. I would say they are a lot closer to a blade than a cavity back. The cut muscle is pretty tiny.

i think he meant to say mp 30 and mp 60, not mp 32 and mp 60....

there is no way i would call mp 32 anything but blades.

i dont really think that the 60's are bldes but i dont think of them as cavity backs... i think that there kinda a mix

Snake Eyes FMC-1, 3-pw

I play Mizuno TP-9s. Haven't found anything as buttery soft yet, but I hear the Cleveland CG1s are pretty soft.

CG1's are blades NOT Forged. The CMM material is soft(I play the CG10 Blackpearl) and as I understand, is still cast.

Currently playing a set of MacGregor M675s plus a VIP forged gap wedge. The 675s are more forgiving but the VIP feels super soft.

Personally I think that the MacGregor 1025s and VIPs are very underated clubs.

Would also like to try the new Ping S58s, but I don't think that they are forged.

Anyhow, each to their own.

Best? Probably not, but I love the bore through red dot and the clean lines. Oh and they feel great when you flush them.

I play KZG forged blades in my short irons, and forged cavities in my mid irons. The feeling is great, and they just look good. And playing in my fair share of wind, being able to hit a lower ball with a blade is a good thing.

I like the way my MacGregor 1025s strikes the ball, but to look at, they have bit much decoration: "VIP", "Tourney", and "V-Foil" all on the back side of the head.

That's what I am thinking about setting up - hybrid 2 and 3, forged cavity 4, 5, and 6, and forged blade 7 up. I'd like to try the 460 Gemini, but the only makers around here are asking $500 plus - I could buy the 905R for less!

I'd always thought the term "muscleback" as a way to more tightly define a blade. A muscleback is surely a blade in every definition of the mechanics involved.

I play Ben Hogan APEX blades and love them. They are classic and are the best looking irons I've owned.

mizunos mp 32, 33, 37, and the NEW 67's all sweet blades.....

all of them....the titleist are a bit "big" for my taste but i do like them still.....
Ping 59's are really nice clubs....very lite compared to mizuno and i can generate more clubhead speed with them....super sticks they are....would not mind having them, don't get me wrong my 32s keep me smiling.....especially those short irons....long irons can be tricky to master though.....but workability is outstanding.....

oh yeah and my favorite blades are the Callaway .............................................?????? :idea:

MP-33s and MP-37s are forged blades.
MP-32s, MP-60s,and MP-67s are forged cavity backs ("cut-muscle" - if you'd like).
All are fine clubs: really enjoyed demo-ing them Mizzys.
MP-60s are exeptionally solid and surprisingly forgiving.

Ben Hogan Apex Plus, being "players'" cavities, are also fine sticks.
Apex FTXs are also very good

I have a Ben Hogan Apex Forged blade 9-iron just for "kicks" I leave it in my pickup just in case I'm near a range, with time to kill....it's a sweet striker.
If I ever have enough leisure time and talent to play to a single digit Index, I'd definately consider a set of Ben Hogan Apex 50s, right up there with 690.MBs

I would classify the 32's and 67's as blades. My definition of cavityback is perimiter weighting.

Now with KZG you get American designed and Japan forged, blades or CBs.
TaylorMade gets their best tour clubs forged by Miura (I think).
Titleist and Callaway have moved to cheaper "forgeries," pun intended, in China (PRC)..so 690.MBs maybe the last set of Titleist irons that may have been forged in Japan. A local Golfsmith manger and local Titleist Staff pro both told me that they think there's a difference: Japan forgings are better.

Miuras are fine looking...

I've also got Ben Hogan APEX blades but there the ones they made in 1988-89. They look really similar. I've played w/ them a few times but they are too punishing for my bad swings to use them all of the time. The lofts are really weak too so judging there distance is a little dicy. That said nothing feels sweeter in the world than puring the 3 iron.

If you go to the hogan site and look thru the iron history you can see them. Unfortunately I couldn't figure out how to attach a picture.

My current iron heads were forged in Thailand by Endo, who is just starting to make their own clubs after being the foundry for many of the top Japanese and US OEM companies. They used to have their foundry in Japan, but have moved to Thailand, obviously for reduced labor costs. They're great clubs. I don't care if they were forged in Antarctica or Paraguay; the people who set up the operation and supervise it obviously know what they are doing.
The same applies to the automobile industry these days. A "German" or "Japanese car" may be made in the US, and an "American" car may have parts from Canada, Europe, Latin America, or just about anywhere. It's an interlocked world from a business and industrial viewpoint.

Titleist 690 MB.......the absolute best. I have literally worn out a set and am on my 2nd. set. I play alot (3 times per week minimum) and would hit nothing else. I wanted the MP-3somethings (true Mizuno blade) but they are not available in lefty.

Rifle Project X in 6.0 XS, if your swing can repeat, this is the club for you.

I sometimes sleep with my 690 MB's right next to me.......Hahahaaaa !

I had asked about the Miura clubs some time ago on this forum but didn't get much of a response. However I finally gave up and ordered a set which I received just 2 weeks ago now. I had them on the range for the first time this week (I kept them new because I was worried I was going to have to sell them right away - my company closed down the day before they arrived, but I have a new job now) and they are absolutely incredible. My Hogan Apex Edge Pros are going into the attic now for a well deserved rest. The Miura blades are the softest feeling, nicest looking clubs around. Very easy to hit too (mine are equipped with precision rifle shafts - 6.0). They really aren't that much more expensive than other clubs, the only trouble is finding a place to get them.

If you want a relatively forgiving forged blade, consider any of the recent MacGregor offerings, such as the 1025 M or the M675's.

Casting process has come a very very long way. Also the significant advances in metallurgy has started to find its way into golf equipment as the commercial market size has increased substantially for golf equipment. In fact Cleveland doesnt have a forged line outside of TA line now. Even their high end CG1 Black Pearl line of blades are cast with their CMM technology. I have a CG10 Black Pearl 56 deg & a Tour Action Form forged 52 Deg wedge. Both of them are buttery soft and glide through the ball and I can see no perceptible difference in them in terms of feel.

Miura blades are it though....I have hit a set...guy at a club i used to be at in texas got some and let me hit them.....soooooo nice when you hit it right.....which of course i do cause im working on my 13th major as we speak....hm hm hmmm.

Tom P if you are playing Cleveland 900-Form Forged,they are basically cast then stamped, the stamping process resembles a step in the forging process,but not a true forging.I've got one in my bag,I love it.My point is for some of us we have this perception forged clubs are somehow better.I'm sure it's totally a mental thing.

I have talked to several high end club makers, and they all agree that the Miuras are world class forged clubs. They are real easy on the eyes too! KZG's are also double forged in Japan, and represent a ultra high quality club. I have hit the Evolutions and loved them, but I really can't justify buying them as my McGregor 1025 CM's are working very well for me (forgiving & good looking).

I think that in a year or two, I might take a serious look at the Mizuno MP 60's. They are good looking forged clubs that provide a little "wiggle room" when the swing goes a bit astray.

Just bought a 53deg wedge by Hiro Matsumoto..... so good i went out and got the 57deg sand wedge next day after a round....

They're made in Japan - I live in Thailand where they're easily available, along with Miura gear.....

Hand ground - i like the unfinished grind marks, and the sharp leading edge grind.

Really helped my awful short game - maybe the appearance or just the 'new' juice on it gave me some confidence. Will see how long the honeymoon lasts.
