I still don't get it, HH.
What the hell did the striped one ever do to you?
I wouldn't consider him an engaging personality, true, but at his best, his play was breathtaking to watch.
There's got to be some underlying reason for your hatred of the man. And since I doubt that you routinely engaged him personally, it's probably not rational.
Yes, I've hated politicians that I haven't personally met, but in that case, they were people who nonetheless negatively impacted my life. Was Woods ever in a position to negatively impact your life?

HH, your hero Phil just dropped out of the Jack Nicklaus tournament citing mental fatigue. Granted, it's only the 3rd tournament he's withdrawn from in over 450 tournaments but still it's a pretty weak move.
Tiger is at -2.

Politicians? Okay, wood is in the same boat as georgie bush-both pompous dumb asses. I've never liked wood, ever since I saw him play in The Amateur and into when I walked by him during Wed practice rd at The Masters. Why does a guy need to be an ass during a practice round? We walked the course from 18 to 1, seeing all the players. People would say things like 'good luck this week Freddie, howya doin' Jack, etc, and ALL the players would acknowledge the fans..........except ONE ass-and we ALL know who that was. It was entertaining to me in the approximately one minute (I knew wood was a jerk before I saw him there, didn't waste my time watching him be an un-appreciative SOB) it took to walk by him to a group that had class players that were enjoying the moment. And don't EVEN bring up the crap that 'well he was grinding, concentrating on the tournament', hell the dumbass didn't win, did he? Hell NO Mike Weir whipped his racist ass that week-and I loved it!Maybe he should talk to Allen Iverson!
The way he's not winning now? GREAT stuff, its called KARMA. Even God knows.........................

HH, you fit the profile of the kind of golf fan that I don't understand. Why do you need the player to acknowledge you when you're applauding them? On TV I see these people who run over to the ropes and yell at the player "go get 'em man!" and they hold up their hand for the player to give them a high five. When the player doesn't give them the high five they act disappointed. What's wrong with these fans? The player is out there trying to focus on the task at hand and doesn't give a crap about your need to be acknowledged.
I saw a guy do that with Fowler at the TPC. Fowler is heading to the 17th teebox and some guy in his 40's runs over to the ropes with beer in hand and starts yelling at Fowler and tries to give him a high five. Fowler just continued on with his head down probably thinking "get this idiot away from me!"
The players owe it to the fans to sign some autographs (some), occassionaly give post round interviews and to acknowledge them on the 18th hole. Nothing more should be expected.
Also, Woods is more of a target than any other player. He needs to be cautious with how close he gets to the fans. Especially guys like HH.

Tiger has won seventeen. If the US Amateur counted for Bobby Jones, it counts for the striped one AND Jack as well.
Neither Woods nor Nicklaus ever won a British Amateur as Jones did. Nobody has won all six majors over his career. That the record that I'd like to see.

I'm sure that you do but many reading this may not know the derivation of the word "fan". It is a shortened version of "fanatic". So most of us think that the Islamic fanatics who are so easily recruited with promises of un-used Poontang in the amount of three-score and 12 immediately after they commit their ultimate act of jihad--pressing the det buttons on their Semtex Hart Shaffner and Marx cutaways--fail to recognize the guilability and vulnerability to the lustre of Athletic Stardom. Thus, I don't blame Phil at all for withdrawing. The real reason he did is he had enough of the cell phone camera action and figured if he got away to someplace quiet and re-grouped, his head would not be f*cked up the that San Francisco goat track where they all play in two weeks.

Who says Tiger has no personality. Anyone who farts on the teebox then laughs his arse off has personality in my book.

If you have ANY comprehension of what I wrote you would be smart enough to realize I never have and never will applaud that racist jerk wood-I have always despised him, he's a very un-appreciative SOB.
And I agree with your assesment on how wood has to be wary of fans-the SOB should be VERY wary of true human beings that have morals-hide the children-especially the daughters, wood is coming to town! I have sometimes saved farts for on the green after I have holed out and my opponents need to sink theirs to tie me in a hole with lots of skins on the line. I like to stand upwind and fart silently so that they won't figure it out until they have missed their putts.

Woods hit the ball better than anyone today and missed 4 or 5 very short putts. He can't afford to be hitting those first putts 4 to 5 feet past the hole anymore because now there's a good chance he'll 3 putt. I can't believe some of these putts that he's missing. He should be 9 under par right now. Some of those iron shots he hit today were amazing. The iron out of the steep fairway bunker that landed on the green, close to the flag was one of those "Only Tiger can do that" shots.
Levin is a streaky player and the last time he held the lead he choked. I'd like to see him win one. If Tiger putts tomorrow like he did today he has no chance.

That shot is definitely one of his top ten all time shots. Anything other than a perfect shot and he loses the tournament. You just knew he was going to win it after that shot. It's good to see him win the tournament in that fashion because the last win wasn't anything to get excited about. I felt for Spencer Levin. He can't seem to get out of his own way on Sunday.

After that shot he was within striking distance, just when they claimed he was out of gas, he sets fire to the place.
I could sense the defeat in Nicklaus tone. He knows his record will be beat by Woods.
By the way played Culver academies 9 hole masterpiece, designed by Langford & Moreau in the early 1900s, I had to walk it twice this weekend, once with my daughter, and another with some friends. I've come to the conclusion some of the greatest holes in golf, I've played, are right there. It was originally a 27 hole design as there is 250 acres, and these holes are on the most dramatic part. Down the road a mile is an older Dye design that's some of his best work, on another over 200 acres, if you could connect the two 9 holes, or if I could convince the Academy to spend there millions, and finish the original Langford & Moreau design wow.
Found out the member that told me Dye desgned Maxinkukee CC was incorrect, it's another William Langford design. Now it makes sense, these two courses less then half a mile apart, with some of the greatest holes in golf. Know wonder Dye has a home here, and there is similarity in his course designs. He robbed them from these 2 designs.

No you are incorrect. Jack has 18 and Tiger has 14. You can't count the US Amateur or compare it to the Bobby Jones era of golf. Things were different back then in that nobody played golf for a living.
Jack has 18 majors and Tiger has 14. Let's not try and make this any more complicated than it needs to be.

You're entitled to your opinion, of couse, FD, but I'm comfortable in my belief that it's bull$h!t, and obvious enough bull$h!t that any reasonable person should recognize it as bull$h!t.
Eliminating Bobby Jones is like eliminating Babe Ruth. It's simply not reasonable.
Also, in the overall scheme of things, amateur golf is infinitely more important that professional golf. The fact that that importance doesn't necessarily carry over into the sports entertainment / spectator sports arena is completely irrelevent. The USGA and R&A Amateur Championships are majors.
Frankly, I think that if there's an imposter, it's the Masters which is an invitational and the championship of NOTHING. It's run by a bunch of Southern aristocrats whose ancestors General Sherman unfortunately missed.

That's not what I was saying at all. I think Bobby Jones record should stand because the US Amateur was a much bigger event back then and the resulting winner was considered the best player in the US. That's no longer the case at all. In fact, many players who win the US Amateur go on to win nothing afterward and can't make the tour.
Back in the day it was the US Open, US Amateur, British Amateur and PGA Championship. That's just the way it was back then. Now, again, we have four majors.
That was then and this is now. I miss Roosevelt too but he ain't coming back.

I think that having a USGA Amateur, an R& A Amateur, or now almost unheard of, both, on one's "major win" resume as a professional is extremely prestigious because those competitors that don't have them can never make that up.
It's about class and prestige.
I admit to being very old school on these matters.
I think that the PGA Championship should be a major without making as many PGA Tour players eligible.
I think that all of the Regional PGA club pro champs and other qualifiers from those tournaments should be there, and only former major winners or winners from the past twelve months on the PGA and European tours should be joining them in competition.
The only reason for that stupid Club Pro Championship is because the real PGA Championship which belonged to the club pros was co-opted. I'd give it back.
The PGA in the title refers to the PGA of America, not the PGA Tour, and the latter has it's own Mickey Mouse Championship (which should never be a considered major unless it replaces the phony baloney Masters) at that Pete Dye monstrosity at Sawgrass.
But if the players insist on calling that ante-bellum nonsense in Augusta a major, it should be one of SEVEN.
The R&A Amateur
The R&A Open
The USGA Amateur
The USGA Open
The (real) PGA Championship (back to match play)
The Players' (PGA Tour) Championship
....and for whatever reason,
The Masters INVITATIONAL
I only include the Players' because it's more legit than the Masters, and nobody wants to give up the Masters. Don't ask me why.

Well said. Fowler was in the same group with Woods yesterday and you could tell he was in awe after that chip in and the birdie putt on the 18th hole. He's probably thinking to himself "damn, I've got a long way to go".
Later, that chump who did the post round interview tried to get some excitement out of Tiger for matching Jack's record. Tiger wasn't having any of it. He didn't even mention Jack. Tiger is an expert at interviewing to his benefit.
Tiger then went down to shake hands with Jack and compare war stories. Tiger knows Jack doesn't want him to beat his record and so they pretend to be cozy for the fans.
Jack's thinking "you still got four more before you tie me you little Sh!t".
Tiger's thinking "I've had more trim AND more wins by 36 than you ever did, Pops".
On to Olympic Club.

Right before the last contender--the Rory who actually contended and not the one from Northern Ireland--failed to hole his second on 18 to tie TW, one of the on-air personalities and I don't recall it being Faldo for he has too much experience and sense to say it, said that Tiger might have problems at Olympic because that course has tighter fairways and that Muirfield had generous driving areas implying that that was why Tiger was gonna win. Muirfield looks incredibly difficult and many of the pros had a difficult time figuring it out. Mickelson folded like a wet towel and had to pack it in after 18 holes, citing mental fatigue. I'd get tired too if I had to count that many storkes. Let's face it, Mickelson is the most overrated player of all time. With as many majors as he's given away he should be considered a major contributor to charity, not a member of the Hall of Fame.

In my opinion, Phil wimped out by not at least sticking around and actually trying to make the cut. It was an insult to Jack that he dropped out. Although he has enough trouble in his universe without piling on some poor play on a real tester of a track. I'll bet he can't stop thinking about Olympic and how his clock is running our in his U.S. Open quest. Maybe he should emulate another grizzled veteran who, unlike Phil, no longer has any hair that isn't pubic--Jim Furyk-- and guzzle a couple of shorties of 5 Hour Energy. If his backswing gets any longer, he'll be able to scratch his right arse cheek with the toe of his nine iron.
Jack still has the money he won........who's the smartest, big fella? I wish the players could/would come on here and read what you 'fans' write about when wood wins-man they'd laugh.

Phil Mickelson is a clear fan favorite and sponsors want him in their tournament fields. That doesn't mean that a particular person can't dislike him, but it does solidify him as a major figure in the game.
I'm reminded of Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali.
I was a big fan, especially in the early part of his career from the 1958 Golden Gloves Nationals when he was sixteen (and I was eleven) to his pre-layoff fights in the 1960s. The big money fights with Frazier and Foremen were actually well past his prime.
The older members of my family, now long gone, disliked him as being an obnoxious big mouth.
Now he is universally beloved, but I've got such deep anti-Muslim feelings over having to remove my shoes at the airport that I have no nostalgic feelings about him at all.
My not caring about him means as little to Clay's fans as FD's dismissal of PM means to his fans. Or HH's dismissal of the Tiger for that matter.

Tha amount of autographs Phil has filled out compared to wood is more than wood has ever read in his life. Class act Phil is..........and 'the people' know it. The real players this week are thinking about US Open and not peaking this week. The real players are kinda like the old Boston Celtics, just clunkin' along until the playoffs start, and then turning it on. The performance wood put on (which was his greatest ever) will be overshadowed by the guys who can actually adjust their performance to the real prize. This little episode this week will be looked and laughed at (and woods fans will be the recipients with their predictions) for years the way he 'was back' and then folded AGAIN in The Major soon after. I'll be drinking on Saturday laughing, he'll be out of it by then.

Augusta's about as tight as a Kardashian Snatch. All the trees within 75 yards of the center of a fairway have had their branches trimmed to a minimum of 6'2" or whatever Phil stands, and the rough rolls at least 7.5 if anyone bothered to put a Stimpmeter on it. If Woods played Augusta in April like he played last week, he would have lapped the field by the start of the Back Nine on Saturday.

This is all quite true, HH. When the striped one is on top of his game, that Antebellum Haven in Augusta is NO place to take him on.

First of all, I like watching Phil Mickelson and from what I've heard from people who have met him he is the real deal. However, he's won 4 majors which really isn't that great of a track record when you consider how many chances he's had to close the deal at majors. I'll always watch if he's in contention because he hits great shots and he loves it. But it ain't like watching Tiger.

IF is the difference between winners and losers, excuses and reasons. Bottom line.....wood can't compete at Augusta-too many younger guys have the ability to hone their game toward the Majors, wood can only win 'other' tourneys.

I've been to Muirfield for the tournament half a dozen times and played it once. It's been relatively resistant to scoring, but I've been there when the winner was 14 or 15 under par. That is unbelievable to me. For less than pros like myself, it is an absolute MF'er. I wouldn't say every hole hole has a narrow fairway, though some certainly do. There is a spot by the 13th tee where I usually spend time watching. You can watch approach shots into the par 5 11th, watch everyone play the par 3 12 (which has a tiny green), and see the tee shots on 13, where everyone hits a big right-left tee shot. Tiger threw his 3 wood on that tee about 6 years ago.
Having played a few tour stops, I would rate Muirfield as the hardest by far. There are no easy holes. 18 is one the hardest holes I've ever played.

I occasionaly play golf with a guy thats played a few Tour Stops (I remember him saying Pebble and Torrey Pines but know there's more) the day after the tourney. He says that the way the ball sits up in the fairways (plus the speed of the fairways makes more ball roll) and how EVERY greens' speed is exactly the same makes it actually easier than a person would think to play these courses-have you found that out too? I mean I trust this guy-and he's a stick, but has this been your experience too?

I have never played a course either right before or after an event, but I agree to some extent about the consistency. Muirfield was in excellent shape when I played it, despite the fact that it was April and had been a wet spring. I would imagine the tour tries to get the fairways and greens firmer and faster for the tourney week, but the rough was just as thick as it was during tourney week. I believe that course plays at least 5 shots harder than my club from the same yardage.
Muirfield doesn't get a lot of play, which is probably the case for a lot of the more exclusive clubs. The range was almost divot free.

Things are really getting crazy at the St. Jude Classic this week. Jeff Maggert, Arjun Atwal and Jeff Overton are leading the tournament. Last week's tournament at Muirfield was pretty exciting but this is truly something special. I've also heard that Brian Gay is in the hunt. Better program your DVRs so you don't miss any of the action.
Did I mention that Davis Love is playing?

I just got back from work and hitting the grocery store and Golf Galaxy for a grip and turned it on to see the Technician from Titleist Zach Johnson take what looked like an extremely long-shafted hybrid or maybe a fairway wood to hit his second shot to the Par 5 16th. He had 222 to the hole and a good bit less to the front of the green. Of course he hit a perfect draw that hit the green and hopped maybe 40 yards over. Can't a guy like that hit a 5 or 6 way up in the air? With this new Titleist ball a rep gave me for free last Sunday at the range, I bet even I at 65 could hit my 5 and bounce it on.

Zach is part of the PGA Tour's skinny arm group. Have you noticed that this group is starting to grow. Webb Simpson, Keegan Bradley, Bill Haas, Zach Johnson, Kevin Na, etc. All of these dudes ain't got no muscle in their arms. It's like we're reverting back to early 1980's tour golf with Tom Kite and Cory Pavin being the pinnacle of excitement.
I bet all of these guys are country club brats who played golf and no other sports. I was good at everything back then: football, baseball, track, badminton, volleyball, croquet, ping pong, darts and lawn jarts. I was also very good at ultimate frisbee.
Nowadays, we got these little pansy arses on the tour that look like they've never been to a bar in their life. They need to be taken behind the shed and issued a whoopin'!.
I tell you something else, I could beat anyone at Risk or Chess back then. I was the chess master. Winner always got to punch loser in the arm. That's what men do.

There were less than 50 of us boys in my public school from 9th to 12th grade so those of us who were physically able played at least one varsity sport. I played on the varity football team my sophomore year but got injured and then pulled out in late October to help my father build us a bomb shelter in our old stone springhouse on the farm. It was 1962 and everybody figured the Russians and us were going to start slinging nukes. I was only about 5'9 1/2 then and only weighed 165 pounds and they had me playing defensive right guard. I played varsity baseball as the starting catcher and bulked up a bit. In the winter, my father and I went up north to ski every weekend for about five years and that built up my lower body. Looking back, I wish I would have concentrated on golf more but back then where I grew up only rich pussified guys played the game and while my family was very well off, I wanted to fit in with my friends instead of getting a golf game together. My father sent me to take lessons from a young assistant pro at one of the clubs he belonged to and in about two weeks he had me hitting 5 iron about 170 with regularity. This was with the tiny forged blades with heavy stiff steel shafts. Unfortunately, I got my driver's license soon afterwards and turned my concentration towards p*ssy as 16 year olds are wont to do.

Isn't Rory leading the Tourney? I was MVP of our high schools football and baseball team senior year-at 5' 5" and 145. I play golf with a guy who played only golf in high school and college, and he always takes me out behind the shed and whoops me on the golf course-it shows you don't have to be an all-around athlete to play good golf. Jack and Arnie were great athletes, I believe Couples and DL III played only golf.

Tiger looks very sharp in his black, grey, white threads today. You work hard, you dress for success and hopefully nobody will remember the thing with the skanks. If people would just stop bringing it up, the whole things would go away.
Which is more than you can say about the anal intrusion he experienced in his divorce, but then that's what divorce does to a guy. I wish people would stop bringing that up too.
MAN.you sound like a VERY bitter wood fan that knows he'll NEVER EVER win another Masters again-change the rules for my hero since I'm a POS. Tiger should take his driver out of the bag. I'm pretty sure he hits his 3 wood almost as far as the driver so I don't see why not. That drive he hit on 16 was terrible. The only thing about this US Open that makes it watchable is Johnny Miller. That guy understands every nuance of that course and can pick apart a swing better than anyone I've heard by a mile. The coverage has been great with great views of drives and iron shots for the audience. There's nothing worse than watching a tournament on TV and all you see is putting. It's definitely one of the better Open's I've seen due to the fact that 10 or more guys could win the thing. It's not looking too good for Tiger.

At least tiger played well enough to keep hh under his rock for 2 days. Didnt take sherlock holmes to figure he'd be crawling out gloating today. Larry holmes could have figured that out.

What about John Holmes? I don't think he would have figured it out.

When Tiger stubbed his chip on 18, I said to myself, "I have that shot in my bag! See! I can play like the pros sometimes!"
Then I thought about how different things might be if Tiger was playing Scratch wedges with custom sole grinds.

You know, Slice, I was actually ready to bite the bullet and spring for a couple of those things. They're really not anxious to sell them.
I asked to have aggressive, non-conforming grooves machined, and was told that I could only get them with the raw finish which I don't want.
(Call them and ask yourself--I'm serious.)
At those prices, and I mean the ridiculous custom shop prices, not the ready made line, those clowns still wouldn't give me what I wanted.
I can't understand how they're still in business.
SO...........how's your boy doing now, tough guy? HAW, HAW, HAW...............
Gee. Big surprise that you would show your face now. You're effectively taking the field against Tiger and thinking you've done something special. Just goes to show how dumb an inbred redneck can be.
Tiger doesn't need to win the tournament to prove our points. Golf is exciting again because he's in the mix. Now go back to picking which sheep you'll mount this afternoon and leave this conversation to people who don't qualify for the Special Olympics.

I don't think that John B. Holmes aka J.B. qualified to play this event.

It takes more than a stiff shaft to win the Open.
If you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen, Meatball. You know you're hatin' it right now 'cause Woods has your number. You were all cocky and acting like he ain't all that and that he's done. Now he's back so you need to slither back under your mossy rock and stay there until he misses another cut. Might be awhile. Dont' forget the hand lotion.
Back? Yeah he's back roundmouth, 6 shots back! ANOTHER successful Major-as far as I'm concerned-wood won't win. Keep me posted on how he does in The British Open, okay roundmouth?

Even if that's true, HH, you can't always say the things that you say and then play the hypersensitivity / sympathy card. You don't have that coming, regardless of circumstance.

Not looking for any sympathy, just saying I don't run and hide-guys/cowards like buddha33 take care of that for us.
