Man, this is getting ugly. Noshuz, it looks like they have much better weather than what we experienced. I'm thinking Sooner may have been better off with the MP-52's. I'm starting to predict a comeback by Dave. Dave...I'm sending you energy...may you putt well for the rest of the round.

Go Dave! Should Dave have to use a foot wedge, can you imagine what kind of distance he could get out of those 14w's?? Crap! It should be considered another club in his bag!

I risked sending a message...

They are playing the Blue tees.

That may be true but with oversize shoes you don't get the same kind of feedback as you do with smaller, GFF shoes.

This is beginning to sound like an epic match. If he got up and down for par on the 8th then his putting must be turning around. Come on Sooner, keep it close. Let's see some of that GFF magic.

I'd be interested to know what Dave will be eating at the turn.....you know he's having something. Couple hotdogs already? Breakfast burrito? Sooner looks anorexic, probably having something like an apple or a banana.

Just woke up. 5am here. Thanks clmax for posting the blow by blow account.
You have done very well gentleman. A good match played in the correct spirit and sharing all the good and bad with us. Great comeback on the second nine Dave. You both were nervous at the start it seems. Understandable with the gravity of the match. Bad luck Sooner, you'll get him next time.
-
After a quick scorecard view, Sooner double bogeyed every par 5. I see a lot of doubles on his card and at least one triple. That'll ruin a round real quick.
-
Yeah I noticed in the live updates that they both doubled the first par 5. Wonder what went wrong there? A bogie on a par 5 is bad enough but double?
-
After a quick scorecard view, Sooner double bogeyed every par 5. I see a lot of doubles on his card and at least one triple. That'll ruin a round real quick.
It would be interesting to find out if Sooner tried to get on any of the par 5's in two. If so, was it the Mizuno Fli Hi Click or the Mizuno 3 wood that led to his demise? One can only guess. These and other questions I'm sure will be answered in short time.

Sooner blocked the tee shot OB, and I hit mine heely, short and left.. then I CRUSHED a 13 deg three wood within about 90 yds and flopped the Cleveland 58* up there about fifteen feet right.. rolled it in for 4, anticlimactic, Sooner was playing for double.

I use to shoot over 90 all the time up until about 3 years ago. I have a serious problem I need to figure out soon if I am EVER going to be competitive in a match -- I am soft between the ears. I don't know how else to put it. When my game starts falling apart in competition, my score can go south in a hurry.
We had a great time out there today. Dave's a great guy and very entertaining (he does accents really good and was imitating you internationals through the course of the match ). Dave conquered his shaky start and played real well as the match went along. He has a smooth swing with little variance. Neither of us putted well today, I kept leaving all my putts just short of the hole and Dave misread the lines often.
I think I OB'd every Par 5 today. And, yes, I tried to get on in two which wasn't smart as most of them were into the wind.
That was my worse round in 2.5 years and the most embarrassing but I have no one to blame but myself. I have to learn to be more disciplined between the ears and not be so tense. I do that shite whenever I am golfing in anything competitive at home, too, but at least I am familiar with my home course and can kind of get around the problem.
This course was in immaculate shape.

I was thinking it was a Walmart shirt, but now I remember I got it at JC Penney, where "big and tall" actually means something. :-) Just because the collar points flipped up in the wind when I shot the pic doesn't mean it was some kind of alien clothing. It was solid color, though. If Fred C can wear stupid boat shoes on national television, I can wear a solid color shirt.
-
I knew I should have shined my footjoys up a little before I came down. They still had red mud stains on them from my home course where I play.
I have bought the $150.00 footjoys twice in the past and found them to be very uncomfortable. So, I settled on a more "athletic" pair from footjoy on my last purchase and like the comfort a lot better.
-

Sooner the best way to learn to deal with nerves is to always play for something. Even if you only play 50 cents per hole skins, it teaches you to play when there is some pressure. The variety of betting games for golf is amazing and always adds fun and focus to a round,

We do this at my home course every week and I am getting better at competing at it. I knew today's score was going all over GR though and it was always in the back in my mind. All I could think about was, "I don't want to to do bad on this hole or I will lose another hole and have a bad score." I know I need to think more positively and be more aggressive. I know I need to relax and let things flow around me (Freddy Couples is one of the best at this that I have seen), but as of yet, I have not been successful at it.
I'm not kidding, guys, right now, after playing in that matchup today, I am just exhausted and my muscles were a bit jittery feeling a couple of hours ago. I NEVER feel that way after a round of golf normally, lol. It really got to me that it was all going to be all over this forum. I need to play more match play events, I am very new to them as this was my first and only one.
Dave had a great mind set out there today, he just cut up, laughed and was smooth. I thought he might fold up after the first few holes and I might have it easy, but things reversed and he really gained momentum off a couple of good holes. I just started this game seriously about 6 years ago and I still have a lot to learn and conquer. I'll keep working at it.
It was loads of fun regardless of all the tension though.
-
You make it sound as though people on here will give a hard time. I thought this was the new and improved, kinder, gentler GR.

I'm stating the bleeding obvious here, but if you start thinking about results and outcomes disaster is bound to happen. I do the same thing in stableford comps, I start thin king of what score i would be on if I parred the next five holes etc, and I start playing crap. As soon as you are thinking about anything other than the shot you are about to play, you are lost. as you said it's a skill you need to pick up, but if you ever want to shoot good scores you have to stay in the now when you are out there.
-

I've never competed in an event at all of any type. The closest I get is my Sunday round with 3 good friends of mine, and we play just for pride, occasionally $1 skins. I play great by myself, walking on with strangers all week. Sunday comes and for whatever reason I fall apart! I resort back to old habits and try guiding the ball thinking I'll have control over it. My tempo speeds up after a few bad shots and before you know it I'm having some of the worst rounds. That's why golf is 80% a mental game. Maintaining a check on your swing is mental, not getting lazy with your focus. I know all this....but I can't always do it.
I totally feel for you on your round today.

You are not unique in being nervous during a match. That happens to everyone. It's not between your ears or some special problem only you possess. Everyone I know who plays competitve golf talks about how they used to play when they first started playing in tournaments. It's always the same story. They hit it great on the range and played the worst golf of their life during the tournament or match. There is only one way to get better at tournament golf or match play and that is to play in more tournaments and more matches. I don't know when it happens but at some point you cross this invisible line and you play better in tournaments than you do in regular Saturday games. You're still nervous but it becomes positive energy and you're able to grind through a bad swing or bad shots. I know this is coming....I didn't lose to Noshuz because of nerves. I play poorly in really bad weather and he played great. I also gave him 10 shots. My point is to just go out there and play in more matches and tournaments until you start playing better in them. Confront your fear, Jedi.
I personnaly didn't feel any pressure. Mainly because I play more against the course rather than an opponent. In our case FD, I felt I had a slim chance but I really didn't care either as you know. Even when I did win I wanted to tell the forum that FD won to save face and keep the greatest ball striker in the world persona alive. FD insisted we tell the truth when it could have been easy to pull the wool over everyones eyes.....
I played one skins game against buddies and didn't like it. I just didn't like the idea of standing there thinking, "I hope he misses this putt". I want to see them do well. Silly yes, but that's the way I roll......

I have a very similar outlook noshuz. My buddy, the guy I refer to as my coach, says I need to try and develop more of a "crush your opponent" mind set. I just can't do it. I have a very positive outlook on golf and life. I want to see everyone playing well every time I tee it up. When I'm way ahead in our skins game and I miss a short putt, my coach tells me it was a pitty putt - one to make me feel better by giving the hole away. I don't know if there is any truth to that, but statistically there seems to be some merit to that claim.

"crush your opponent" is a macho term and stupid. There's nothing wrong with wanting to beat someone you're playing against. Playing skins games for a little money is fun. When the bets get too high is when it becomes unfriendly.

My mindset in matchplay is that I'm going to lay good solid golf and not give anything away. If I play well but the other guy plays better and beats me, I still walk away happy. I'd rather lose a high quality match than play crap and win against someone who was even worse.

My sentiments exactly. My takeaways were--
I met SoonerBS and he's fun, amiable great guy... we'll do it again soon.
I started double double, and added another one before the front nine was over... but I played the back 3 shots better, even though I missed at least 3 putts on the back inside 5 feet. A little extra concentration on chips/approach putts and I"m at 38 instead of 41 on the back.
I was a bit sloppy off the tee, and I hit some irons right because I was lined up that way, and with all the screwing up it was still only 85. Better scores are just a few rounds away IMHO.
I really should have birdied 18 too. I was 50 ft from the pin in two, but my punch lob chip landed right in the dirt fringe collar, a lawnmower cut line that was sanded, and the darn zip grooved Cleveland just slammed on the brakes and left me 15 feet short. That's the putt I missed at the end by leaving it short.
Looking back on it, I"m not unhappy. Mistakes easily identifiable, simple enough to address.. if the old body can hold out through the practice, I should be able to get this game back into shape eventually. :-)

when you're 6'4" and 295 lbs, you do worry about accidentally crushing your opponent..
