post my scores and experiences at Golf SLO Blog
I regularly post my scores at San Luis Obispo County courses at my blog at www.golfslo.com. Recently, I've shot anywhere between a 79 and 92. Started getting my game down in the low 80's on a consistent basis, then sprained my right hand and took some time off. Now I have to work my way down again.

I shot +5 in my first Stableford men's association tournament Saturday. It was good enough for tie for 5th and I won a skin. I had three birdies on the front (6, 8, and 9) but didn't get any birds on the back.

I shot a 75 in the weekly noon tournament at Bountiful Ridge today. This is a good score for me. I birdied the first two holes! I had another good overall putting day, but three-putted 16 and 17.

Here is the round

I won a skin on #2 and should be high in the money with my 35 on the front nine. It was a beautiful first day of autumn and the colors were definitely out.

I had a very enjoyable round at River Oaks today.

I wanted to try playing there again after having such a hard time in the Amateur early in the season. I lost balls and left then. It was bad luck having to start on #2...very tough stretch there.

This was one of the first times to play the course. I did pretty well with the driver...keeping it in play. The only really bad drive I hit was on #10. I probably won't ever hit a driver on this hole again...way too much club. I hooked it into the trees, but it stayed out of the hazard and ended up in the rough. I hit a 6 iron on the approach. This is a very short hole. I hit a great 6 iron and nearly made the birdie.

I birdied the next two holes and was 2 under on the back through 14. I hit a 6 iron 3 1/2 feet from the hole on 14 (par 3). I could have had back-to-back-to-back birdies, but didn't hit a very good 5 wood second shot on the next hole (par 5).

Here is the round

This is one of my best and most enjoyable rounds, so I entered each shot. I can relive the round years from now. The only bad thing is I left my camera in the truck, so no picture souvenirs from today's round.

The weather was just perfect, the scenery was awesome, and the course was in great shape other than relatively slow greens and a few damaged greens.

I ended up with 74 (39/35). That should help get the handicap down again (5.2 now).

Shot an ugly 79 today on a 6,300 yard course. I was driving the ball very well, however there were two key downfalls to my play today.

1) Wedge shots 50-120 yards. I was hitting the front of the green and these things were spinning. Instead of throwing the ball behind the hole and sucking it back, I was leaving myself with long birdie tries.

2) Putting. I 3-putted 3 GIR that I hit for bogeys. This killed me. After a while I was just taking my two putts and getting out of there.

ok./......
I am not really happy with i played today, but it could have been a lot worse. I went out for a quick nine at about 3:30.
First hole: 2 putt par
2: Eagle, par five, went driver, 4-iron, 1 putt,(20)footer
3rd:Double Bogey....bad way to give those 2 strokes back...

Par'd out from there, so i ended up at even, some scrambles, some birdie opps, but everything went ok...

peace

as an 8 handicap, you're not happy with an even par round?

After letting my score rise from 79 back up to 92 after infrequent play over the past 3 months due to a hand sprain injury, I'm working on whittling my score back down. Last week at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande, CA, I at least headed in the right direction by posting a score of 86.

Although I'm not particularly happy with an 86, it's beats a 92! I struck the ball well, both off the tee and in the fairway, experiencing only a couple poor shots. I hit 13 fairways and 10 greens in regulation - 7 of those greens on the front 9! I birdied the 7th hole after attemting to drive the par 4 green, leaving myself a short chip and putt. An errant OB off the tee on 8 was my only serious mishap on the front nine.

The back nine started off well with 3 consecutive pars, but I triple bogied 13 after struggling from the front-side sand trap. I then bogied the remaining holes.

My biggest problem was putting. I 3-putted 5 greens! 3 of those 3-putts occured in the first 5 holes! Overall, I had 39 putts - perhaps my worst putting performance since returning to golf this year. Admitedly, I haven't been playing or practicing much, so this part of the game will expectedly suffer. The good news is that with improved putting, I should find myself breaking 80 again.

I just started playing golf again this year after taking 4+ years off due to tendonitis problems in both arms (due to golf and hockey). I've now taken up the game 5 times in my life, but never kept it up for more than one year. This is the year I plan to stick with it.

I experienced a strange round of ups and downs at Avila Beach Golf Resort today, resulting in an 87. After putting so poorly last week at Cypress Ridge Golf Course last week, I decided to spend a little more time chipping and putting before my round today at Avila Beach Golf Resort - which largely paid off.

I wasn't hitting many greens in regulation, but did put a lot of chips very close to the pin which I then 1-putted, but more often to save bogies instead of pars. I think I only 3-putted once - a big improvement over last week. I holed one of my chips for a birdie on 11 and made another birdie on 8, sinking a 20 foot putt.

But today, my problem was letting a few drives, fairway irons, and short wedges get away from me, resulting in 5 double bogies. Although I didn't have a single triple bogie, I can't remember a round with so many doubles. Argh!

As so many golfers know, it's so frustrating to have one part of your game working one day and on another day have the part of your game that failed you before be the best part of your game - at the expense of what worked the previous day.

Anyway, that was my experience today. Putting and chipping were on, fairway irons and short wedges were off.

But I did hit some amazing drives and felt so good over my chips and putts that I'll give this game another shot next week!

I played on just aerated greens yesterday during the weekly twilight tournament at Valley View. I had 21 putts  and shot a 44. The short game was pathetic. I hit every chip long and half the putts, too.

My team won a 2 man scramble at my home course yesterday. We had a 66 (34-32 6 under) and won by 2 strokes gross in the First Flight. $180 each in pro shop pseudo money. It's shopping time...gotta spend whatever I have this month!

#7 My 6 iron, two putts
#8 My drive in middle, Dave's long chip, my putt (8 feet)
#9 Dave's drive in middle, my 3 iron, my chip, Dave's putt (2 feet)

I played in the last weekly twilight tournament of the season yesterday at Valley View. It's sad to see the season end here. :(

I hit 7 out of 9 greens, but had 20 points, so I was out of the money. There was a high school State tournament then...I think the pins/greens were a little tougher. I putted fine, but even the putts that looked in would be a few feet away at least in the end.

+1 for a quick 9 at an easy course today...

I played a short course for kicks and build some confidence (hopefully) today. I started out bogey-bogey, but had a birdie-eagle in there and ended up with a 35 on the par 34.

It was a nice mid October day in the mid 60's. I like to play on days like this when there is still a lot of color in the leaves and about half are on the ground.

I hit 14 greens today (second most this season) in a weekly tournament at Bountiful Ridge. I was 1 under after 10 and had brief thoughts of breaking 70 for the first time. That was over a couple of holes later hehe.

The team won the team Chicago game on the back and for the 18. We were +15 on the back which is probably a record hehe. Lots of birdies. I had 3 birdies on the back and 1 on the front...won $40 in skins (2).

Bear's Best Las Vegas/Local pros/Teenagers/Since
Since no one at home wants to listen to the play by play...

Recently went to Vegas for the first time and played TPC The Canyons and Bear's Best. The Canyons was nice, but aside from the perfect fairways, and if i'm gonna blow $200+ on a round of golf, I would have played Bear's Best on both days.

How come it is more nerve-racking to get paired with teenagers at an expensive course than it is to get paired with a Senior Tour amateur/pro? On Saturday, I played an enjoyable round at The Canyons with a Vegas-local who had Monday qualified for several Senior Tour events. If we were competing (aren't we always?), I guess you could say that I took advantage of his bad day and had a decent round of 81 from the blues to best him by a few. 40-41.

Professional golfers--no problem. Teenagers who can afford $250 rounds of golf--I'm terrified.

It was just the three of us and a forecaddie at Bear's Best. Very well-dressed and sporting the latest golf equipment, one was in junior high, the other in early high-school. We stood on the first tee, the four of us, and I asked, "Normal tees or tough tees?" In an almost prepubescent voice that was deflected by the tall golf bags, I hear, "Tough tees." The tough tees at Bear's Best play to a 147 slope, 7200 yards, and--fortunately--a par of 72. I can't remember who teed off first at #6 PGA West, Palm Springs, but what I do remember is hitting a scared 3 iron while the two teenagers smack drivers around 250.

Excuses, excuses--I know.

Bear's Best is a tough course with few holes resembling none that I would consider tough by my local standards. Even on reasonable par 4s, there is something designed into the fairway, bunkers, greens, or rough intended to punish you. The front nine was a nightmare, I shot 46. By the turn, the cloak that protected the teenagers had disappeared and we three seem to be on equal footing, trading between us mediocre shot after mediocre shot. As is usually my pattern, after resigning to a round to be disregarded by the handicap system, I loosen up and start hitting fairways and greens. As is also my pattern, one blow up hole plagued my almost perfect back nine. How about 8 pars and a quintuple bogey 10? I can't think of a more poisonous event to a golf round than a bogey on a par 5, and I scored a 10. Here's the sequence: lateral hazard off the tee, played the ball in the hazard, lost the ball hitting out of the hazard, 3 iron to 50 yards, mis-hit into the front bunker, mis-hit back into the bunker, blasted out to back of green, three putt. I then proceed to par out with several up and downs for a 41. My younger friends imploded on the back nine.

I suppose an 87 is a respectable score for a new course of 147 slope. However, ever since that round I have been repeating the mediocre front nine, stellar back nine pattern. Such is golf...
