If you initially removed the marker, watched the ball move, told the guys, then re-marked the ball without replacing it back in the original position, then removed the marker a second time and putted out - you did nothing against the rules.
If however you removed the marker, the ball moved, you told the guys, you replaced it to its original position, THEN re-marked it, aligned it, removed the marker, and putted out - you would be in violation of the rules.
This all depends upon whether you played the ball from the new position where it came to rest, or whether you placed it back into the original position after it moved. So long as you played it from the new position, you're all good.
FON
If the act of marking or placing the balk caused the ball to move, the ball must be moved to the original position. If it was me in a comp and the ball moved pulling the marker, I would inform my competitors before I did anything. In general I would remark and replace the ball back to the original position and start over.
If the ball moved on its own I would still let the others know before proceeding. Before I putted I would probably mark and replace the ball again before I addressed the ball. Just to make sure it is going to stay put. The worst would be to address the balk after it moved and have it roll again and incur a penalty.

For all of you guys spending more than two sentences on an action where a marked ball moves a bit after the marker is removed, does the words "anal retentive" mean anything to you?

Yeah but that's not important. What is important is that you exhibit a world class, tour caliber swing as you card double and triple bogies for the 1st six holes before the inevitable walk off.
Riverologist was right in his initial assessment. I've never seen anything like this in all my years playing golf. I think the problem is the X-stiff shaft Qturn has in all of his clubs. Cleary he needs a XX Stiff shaft. I think it would straighten out his shots and get him through Q school.

Still playing my newly acquired Tourstage Z101's.
I tried the MP-53 a few weeks ago when I was in Auckland and didn't think it felt that great. But by then I'd hit a couple of buckets of balls and had tried the MP-52, 62, 63, 67, MX-200 as well as the Ping G15, i15 S56 and a couple of other random models. I think I was getting tired and my swing was off by then.
A bit like trying a new beer late at night when you have already had far too many and by then anything will taste like shite. You need to try it another time when it is your 1st beer and you are thirsty.
I need to try the MP-53 another time when I am fresh.

If I were to try a GFF club I think it would be the Mizuno MP-67. There's a guy on craigslist selling them and I'm tempted. I'm trying to get him down to $275. Supposedly they've been used for 2 rounds and a little range time. My experience is that in reality they have 20 rounds and 10 range sessions.
-
67's are some of the best MP's Mizuno ever made. The new stuff just feels like crap to me. I thought the 68's were gonna be great but I hit them terribly. I picked up a 67, all was back right with the world. Still quite happy with my MP-60's though. Those 690mb's are waiting for the 60's to get in the dog house

In this case it's petty and for this match who really cares because it doesn't really change the location of the putt. But what if the ball rolls 10 feet toward the hole and settles within inches for a kick-in putt? You might care then.

I for one won't sanction disregarding the rules of golf. Yes, they're technical. Yes, they can produce unfair results. But they operate to ensure integrity and fairness. Disregard them and it's cheating plain and simple. If one competes by the rules in real competition, they respect this. Part of what makes golf special is honor and respect for the rules. Yes, even in situations like this. I truly hope my interpretation is wrong. But a real golfer honors the rules even if they involve something seemingly small and/or they don't like them in a particular instance.

I agree but I also think that if someone knows the rule they should speak up so that the person who is unintentionally breaking the rule can correct it before the damage is done. Some good examples are the one we've been talking about or taking the correct drop out of a hazard or unplayable lie.
Once I was playing with this guy who was in a greenside bunker. On the other side of the green was a lake with yellow stakes on this side of the water. He skulled his sand shot into the lake. He was about to drop on this side of the lake and I told him he couldn't do that. He started getting pissed and I told him that he could either hit again from the bunker with a stroke penalty or he could go on the other side of the lake on a direct line with the pin and hit from there with a stroke penalty. He was pissed off for the rest of the round because I told him the rule.

It is a good example as in my opinion a situation like that calls for red stakes, at least the portion where the ball would most likely have to go over land between the green and the lake. But the stakes weren't red they were yellow.
I agree that if things are allowed to stand it's based on accepting what was tantamount to a ruling by the other players, even if improperly made. But not because the rules can be ignored.

The most annoying type of fukwit on the course is the rules guy who will see an infraction coming from a playing partner who isn't sure of the rules, wait til the deed is done, then is all over him like stink on shitt telling him how many penalty shots he has incurred and where to take a drop etc. The classic is when a newby tees his ball slightly in front of the markers, then after saying nothing and watching him hit a great shot, pipes up with "You'd better try again for three". I agree with Zo that golf is a game of unbreakable integrity and every rule should be upheld at all times, but those guys who delight in pulling rules on other golfers after the fact are arseholes. In matchplay fair enough, you are trying to bury your opponent and everything within the rules is fair game, but when you are playing a friendly stroke round it's good manners to intervene before your partner breaks the rules.
Speaking of matchplay tactics, I thought of a ripper that would get results, despite being absolutely despicable. There was a bit of ribbing about marking balls on the green today, and I was thinking that in matchplay you could ask your opponent to move his marker one to the side on every single hole, regardless off whether his ball is on your line. As well as being bound to pick up a couple of free holes when he forgets to replace the marker before putting, it would annoy the absolute hell out of your opponent and get under his skin by about the third hole. You could expand on this tactic by mixing up how many putter heads to the left or right you want him to move his ball, and could pull him up on the first or second hole about whether he moved it correctly.

If you asked me to move my mark when it clearly wasn't in your line I'd just say no. Also, in matchplay you have to call the penalty before either of you tees off on the next hole. Once you've teed off the last hole is off limits for rules.

The three of us didn't know the nuances of the rule and if it was a penalty for moving it back or not. In a real match, I would have called over an official and gotten a ruling. If any of us knew it or knew where to look, hey let's get it right. But we didn't and there wasn't a real easy way to solve it other than just don't worry about it. I'm all for getting it right and am probably more interested than anyone here to see if I moved it back or played it from its new spot.

In reality, whatever happened is irrelevant at this point, you both left the course agreeing you had tied. Rulings happen at the course, not 3 days after the fact.
There is some potential intrigue to this story though... we already have the qtard walk-off, could we possibly also have the Mward2002 cheating scandal in the same outing?

I meant you wait til the second or third hole to argue about the moving of the marker after he putts and before he walks off the green when you know full well he did it properly, then conceed that it was close so you'll "let this one go, but don't make a habit of it", adding "you've been doing it on every green so had to bring it up" with an intimidating tone to put doubt and anxiety into his mind (and as we well know any initmidation is good intimidation). I think you will find that you would have to move your marker if your opponent asked you to do it, it is their decision if your marker is in a position which interfers with their shot, not you. It's like asking someone to mark their ball even though it's not in your line, you just do as your asked. I am a gentleman and protector of the great game of golf so I would never stoop to these lengths, but IMO they would be within the rules and would be very hard to negate if used against you.

However, I played the tips at every course including Disney Magnolia which is 7600 and I showed up and met some real nice chaps!
Rio Pinar was probably the worst course I played too!!
I honestly don't know where every else stood. I could have been winning and would have done the same thing and had no idea. I don't even know where I stood. So comeback was not on my mind. I cared about my game which wasn't close to making me feel comfortable about playing on, so I went and worked on it.
I can tell you that you were about Dead Last!! I couldn't believe how wild you were to be honest! I mean I was bad but sheesh!
Hi
I speak here as Mark, not Edgey
I have refrained from joining in as i rarely say anything on this forum that is more than a rant/troll/flame/pisstake. BURNDOG will attest to the fact that i am nothing like the person who i present myself to be here.
As a person who has hosted a GR game at my home club i cannot envisage any circumstance where i would walk off leaving my guest or guests to fend for themselves. This type of behaviour is an anathema to me both as a person and as a golfer. As Spank has alluded to Golf has nothing to do with swinging a club at ball. It is in fact a test of a persons character. We are the only game where we act as the referee and call fouls on ourselves. Integrity is a quality that goes to the heart of this game and it cannot be learned or purchased by the hour. This is why Singh and Monty are still haunted by the cheat allegations, better to lose with integrity than win without when playing golf.
Kiwi and Sooner are correct, i may be a c unt, but i am a c unt who is a gentleman and who undertsands that my integrity is my reputation. I will never be judged by the scores that i put in at my club, only by the way in which i scored them.
Pottsy, if and when you and i play i can assure you that our game will be played in the same way i played BURNDOG. With humour, honour, integrity and gracious good spirit. I can also assure you that no matter how i play i will NEVER walk off a golf course in the middle of a game.
I have ribbed Sooner mercilessly for his 97 and i will no doubt rib Dave for his hackfest but i will always respect the fact they kept going in the knowledge that their integrity was, is and always will be way more important than their pride.
I have no intention of personalising this post as everyone makes mistakes, particularly when they are young and everyone deserves a second chance.
I will now revert to Edgey mode
That is all
The three of us didn't know the nuances of the rule and if it was a penalty for moving it back or not.
The point is I wasn't and I am still not interested in this one stroke penalty. I wouldn't have wanted a penalty then and I don't now! I wasn't bothered to enter into a discussion on the rule because I was never going to call the penalty. It wasn't cheating and I like Mward and Dave so I was just happy to move on.

Sp you're admitting to retrospectively conspiring to break the rules? That's a DQ for both of you in competition (although maybe you didn't breach any rule as I seem to vaguely recall that this rule doesn't count in matchplay as you agree to break the rules every time you give your opponent a putt and he picks up before finishing the hole). Luckily for both of you the governing body for this match is GR, and we'd rather argue endlessly about whether a rule was or wasn't breached than actually come to an agreement and doing something about it. I'd say you'll be safe for years at least, maybe decades if Larry and Alan G Baker enter the argument and take their customary opposing sides.
-
At least Dave and MW want to get it right. Would have preferred Pottsy acknowledge a ruling was made than blow off the rules. Well, we weren't there so the video awaits.

Germans are/were by nature very good for following rules.....I wonder how that oven thing fit in to all that?

Here, here!! Very well put, Pottsy!
Don't allow these anal retentive, bum rangers in here pull you in to their web of golf "legaleze". While we all know that gophers are the lowest varmint on the varmint food chain, in the realm of human waste management, "Golf Lawyers" sit at the bottom of the lagoon. All matches and rounds should be won, or in your case, tied, by great shots and putts under pressure, NOT by a ball that has moved a cu.nt's hair by someone's finger or strong fart.

Hey now.. I take great pride in my strong farts. It's given everyone a reason to watch the video and gives Dave pressure to get the video out once it finishes uploading. Because it was shot in HD, the file must be insanely huge at 3+ hours of footage. It may take a solid week of uploading to actually come onto his computer.
Oh, and for what it's worth. Here's the answer to the rule. Super nerdy to even ask I'll admit, but now we know.
Dear Mr. Ward,
In reply to your email, the answer to your question depends on whether the movement of the ball was directly attributable to the act of removing the ball marker – see Decision 20-1/15 for the meaning of the term “directly attributable.” If the movement of the ball was directly attributable to the act of removing the ball marker, the player incurs no penalty and the ball must be replaced. If, however, the movement of the ball was not directly attributable to the act of marking, the player would incur a one stroke penalty and the ball must be replaced – see Rule 20-1. In either case, if the player failed to replace the ball and played a stroke from that wrong place, he incurs a penalty of loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play for a breach of Rule 20-1.

Also, you're 2-0-1, unless there's a UK conversion I'm not familar with haha

Ah I didn't know we were counting Qtip but yeah I will chnage it ;-)
I only played one more after you - Grand Cypress East and North - which was really great. I didn't play great again though and had 81. I had 76 at Highlands Reserve, 77 at Celebration, 77 at Championsgate International, 80 at Disney Magnolia and 81 at Grand Cypress. All off the tips but I wasn't happy with one round! Needless to say the round we had was the worst!
The US system makes you feel better though as for instance the rating at Disney was 76, Celebration 74.5, Highlands Reserve 72.9, Championsgate 76.3 and Disney Magnolia 76.
You can point a gun at someone else but all of a sudden when it's pointed back you can't handle it? Getting a little defensive? Hmm....
Sorry, Q, but it is never the right time to point out other people's shortcomings while apologizing for your own.
The subject wasn't shortcomings: the subject was you abandoning your guests because you were having a little snit about your game. Real humans; people who could have become friends.
Having a snit about things isn't all that bad, it's what you do about it that counts. I was in the mother of all snits when I returned from the water one day during the Soling WCs I mentioned earlier (isn't it funny how life works that this should be a useful example today?). We'd been sailing badly after working so hard to get there and sail well. As we approached the dock I was not talking to my two very good friends who made up our little crew, and I heard my name called out over the PA to come to the office. Where I discovered that my grandfather had just passed away. After calling home and being assured by my parents that there was no point in trying to make it back for a funeral, I was still in a mood to chuck the whole rest of the event. But I was treated with such kindness and concern by people I'd only met a couple of days previously—my fellow competitors hearing the news and seeking me out to tell me how much the felt for me, that I realized that I could go a better way than going off to sulk. I could decide to be better than that.
We never did make up for our early lack of success in the regatta, but with a renewed commitment to the crew, I had a better attitude and didn't spoil the even for Pavel and Peter.
You owed them an apology, and you gave it. That was good.
Then you ****ed it up by not stopping the reply right there.
My 2 cents.

He could be good for the sport and sports in general. We haven't seen a good "fit thrower" since John McEnroe retired from tennis. McEnroe was awesome, I loved watching his matches just hoping the lines judge would call a close one out of his favor.

I heard that Qtwat walked off after 6 holes in a GR match in which he was the host, but I didn't know it had created this much of a stir.
We need to keep better track of the GR Matches. Perhaps if the threads are started with a more identifiable Title, a mod could sticky them until the discussion on the match has ended. We should also have an index of previous GR matches, with all pertaining threads.

Here is a song for Mr. Tong from the Beatle's "Hey Jude"
Hey Tong, don't hit 'em bad
Take a sad round and make it better
Remember to finish what you start
Then you can start to swing much better
Hey Tong, don't be so lame
You were made to go out and shank her
The minute you quit trying to win
Then you'll begin to finish 6 better
And anytime you want a game, hey Tong, refrain
Don't ask us down, to your course in Florida
For well you know that it's a fool who plays with you
By making his round a little colder
Na na na, na na, na na na na
Hey Tong, you were 5 down
You had floundered, then cried and whimpered
Remember to finish what you start
Or else we'll fart..in your general direction
So swing it out then swing it in, hey Tong, listen
You're waiting for some way to break 90
And don't you know that it's just you? Hey Tong, you're rude
The movement you need is in Larry's folder
Na na na, na na, na na na na, yeah
Hey Tong, don't make it bad
Take your sad swing and make it better
Remember you shouldn't go play skins
When your 3 friends, think you're a court jester
Better, better, better, better, better, oh!
Na na na, na-na na na

If you beat me, that will make you 2-1. All against me. I expect you will need to get to six wins before you consider yourself the King of all GR Matches, not to mentionyou need to defeat some other GR dudes besides me..
Big Dave loses -- he goes to 5-2 and FD to 2-1..... not quite as impressive, amigo.
Don't even THINK about Big Dave WINNING. :-)
And we need to start thinking about how many shots to give River, who has chosen to highlight his present disadvantages... ;-)

I disagree with this thinking. If you have beat 5 people and I have beat you twice that would make me the king. That means that I beat all of the people you beat by default.
I doubt I'll have any chance at winning anyway. My shortgame is horrible and I've got this nagging pain in my hip. Not to mention the fact I can't eat sausage anymore. That used to be my favorite food before a big match. Now what do I do? Plus I'll be tired, cranky and jet lagged from the trip to Vegas. I guess I'll just have to do my best but we all know I have no chance.

Actually, if I beat you and River that would make me 3 and 2. But the first one I had to give away 8 shots and it rained on my Ping grips and the second one I was playing with foreign clubs. So the losses really should have an asterik mark.
In reality, all I want is to be the current reigning GR champion.

Qtong was a man who thought he was a golfer
But GR knew he wouldn't last
Qtong teed off Tuesday morning in Orlando
Intending to kick some GR ass
Get back, get back
Get back to the 6th tee where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Get back to the 6th tee where you once belonged
Get back, Qtong
Go home
Get back, get back
Back to the 6th tee where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Back to the 6th tee where you once belonged
Get back, qtong
Big Dave, Pottsy & Mward thought qtong was a woman
For quitting instead of being a man
All of GR found his actions stunning
But he hits the range while he can
Get back, get back
Get back to the 6th tee where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Playing another skins game is so wrong
Get back, qtong
Go home
Get back, get back
Get back to the 6th tee where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Get back to the 6th tee where you once belonged
Oooh...
Get back, qtong
Your GR guests are waiting for you
Wearing a pink shirt and a Callaway visor
Go back and play is what I'd advise ya
Get back, qtong
Get back, get back
Get back to the 6th tee where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Get back
Oh, yeah
Qtong was a man who was an aspiring golfer
But couldn't stand the GR heat
He was schooled by Dave, Mward & Pottsy
And quit cause he knew he was beat
Get back, get back
Get back on the course qtong
Get back, get back
At least be a good host
And guide your guests before saying "So long"
Get back qtong
Oh, yeah

So, . . . . . . staying on this theme and being the intellectual thinkers that we are on GR, and not shying away from any subject, . . . . . . . . can we say that there is an "artist" gene in some people's DNA that they are born with that allows them the talents such as we have seen with FD and KP? And, if so, can we assume that this gene is also closely related to the "homosexual" gene since experience has shown us that a lot of artists, today and in the past, have been known fags? Hmmmmmm . . . . . . .

Get back to the 6th tee where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Playing another skins game is so wrong
Get back, qtong
Go home
Get back, get back
Get back to the 6th tee where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Get back to the 6th tee where you once belonged
Oooh...
Get back, qtong
Your GR guests are waiting for you
Wearing a pink shirt and a Callaway visor
Go back and play is what I'd advise ya
Get back, qtong
Get back, get back
Get back to the 6th tee where you once belonged
Get back, get back
Get back
Oh, yeah
Qtong was a man who was an aspiring golfer
But couldn't stand the GR heat
He was schooled by Dave, Mward & Pottsy
And quit cause he knew he was beat
Get back, get back
Get back on the course qtong
Get back, get back
At least be a good host
And guide your guests before saying "So long"
Get back qtong
Oh, yeah
Kiwi, great job! I love the Beatles but that's probably one of my least favorite songs. Great for this purpose, though.
So, . . . . . . staying on this theme and being the intellectual thinkers that we are on GR, and not shying away from any subject, . . . . . . . . can we say that there is an "artist" gene in some people's DNA that they are born with that allows them the talents such as we have seen with FD and KP? And, if so, can we assume that this gene is also closely related to the "homosexual" gene since experience has shown us that a lot of artists, today and in the past, have been known fags? Hmmmmmm . . . . . . .

I would say it's a mix of environment and natural ability. I've always performed in talent shows, plays, etc. when I was younger and played a lot of air guitar in front of the mirror. I won a rapping contest in college. I can also do a great Boy George impersonation as well as James Blunt. If you think that's gay it's only because your childhood was limited to cow pie throwing and tobacco spitting contests.

Inspired by the brilliant work of FD and KP, here is my contribution to the song parody category of Qtard bashing...
You got no balls Q-Tong
(To the tune of "You Shook Me All Night Long" by Acca Dacca)
He was a hook machine, with a crappy swing
He was the worst damn golfer that I ever seen
With his slanted eyes, he walked off after five
Walked out on his guest and left them all high and dry
Dave went to lengths to get there, I guess Q didn't care, they looked for him at the turn but he wasn't there
'Cause his irons were shankin'
His game was tankin'
His breath was stankin'
What a wanker
And you, got no balls Q-Tong
Yeah you, got no balls Q-Tong
Like a total clown, he couldn't finsh the round
On the sixth tee box, he was nowhere to be found
He was a terrible sport, he had to abort
It was a display of bad taste worse than Pottsy's shorts
He was makin' doubles or worse, he'd drop his irons then he'd curse
He know he couldn't win, so he left and played some skins
He was totally hackin'
His game was lackin'
He kept three-jackin'
It sent him packin'
And you, got no balls QTong
Yeah you, got no balls Q-Tong
Qinqin solo then repeat chorus.

This is really a question about your subconscious. Unless you suspect deep down you're homosexual, you're not likely to give it much thought.

Options are more restricted for behemoths such as myself... even Target doesn't have my size.. I go with black by default.. would that I could wear golf attire such as you wore in Florida, Pottsy!
