MOst sets these days have stronger lofted clubs. That's why so many people get gap wedges to fill the gaps.

But technology has played a part in the stronger lofts in another way many people fail to realise. Because most CB's these days have lower centres of gravity than blades, they get more height so the stronger lofts have a similar flight than the same club in a blade with a weaker loft.

So, another way to look at your point HB, if you have a pitching wedge of 44 degrees the chances are it's a super GI CB POS shovel with a really low centre of gravity i.e any 'players' club from Ping or Callaway. And if you play a club like that you definitely are a hacker.

You can slap a PW on it if you want, but anything with 44 degrees of loft is a 9 iron. My Hogan Apex PW is 48 degrees. Even that,by old standards, would be a slightly stronger lofted PW.

Good thread, HB. You're right RJ. The marketing wh*res at the big companies have successfully pushed for stronger lofts over the years, making it possible to separate companies with credibility, like Mizuno, from those that are sales wh*re driven, by virtue of the loft of their clubs.

    Thanks!

They do make them in hybrid versions. The first four are hybrids, the others are my side wedges. All of them have zip-up covers.

I frequently use either my hand wedge or my foot wedge out of the traps. You wouldn't believe how many saves I have. For putts, I have the brand-new twelve ball belly putter. You wouldn't believe the one-putts I come up with. Of course, my putter wouldn't be complete without the rubber ball retriever attached to the top of it. Did I mention that the putter has a laser alignment system on it?

Of course, for the water holes, I have one of those floating balls. Works great. I just throw my octopus retriever out there and scoop it right up. For non-water holes, I use the radar ball from sharper image to automatically find it.

I also have a belt clip that holds six tees, a scorecard, a magnetic ball marker, and a club brush.

The last thing I'd ever want to do would be to weaken a deep, otherwise permanent relationship between two guys, but HB plays a hybrid, doesn't he? And in your last however many references to gaybrids, I don't remember seeing any "except as a fairway wood replacement" qualifiers. So under what framework are you making HB's hybrid disappear?

The reason I'm asking is, I'm thinking about demoing one. I play with this guy that replaced his 3 and 4 irons with a hybrid, makes long chips on the collars with it, and hits the most beautiful knockdowns from 160-190 like an absolute machine. And this guy is 280-290 off the tee. I actually enjoy my long irons and, truth be told, would struggle having to look at my bag with a hybrid in there. But overall I'm a better player than this other guy, and I can't hit knockdowns to such precise distances as he can.

Omen's gonna hate me for this but I have made some bag changes and added a gaybrid as well in place of a 5 wood. He will be happy to know, however, that the Mizzy MP-33 GRAIN FLOW FORGED blades are back as well. Ahhhhhhhhh how I missed that soft feel. After spending time freezing my arse off on the range, I demo'd the rescue mids and I gotta say these things are lazer beams and very controllable. The face is actually smaller & more shallow than a 5 wood (I like shallow faced woods hence my launcher 3 wood) so I can't say these are very forgiving, they have little offset, and that's not why I got it. It's more workable than your run-of-the-mill 5 wood.

I spoke with the local pro at the range and told him about GR and how we grill people that use GI shovels and gaybrids. He had a good laugh and agreed that oversize clunky irons can dimish your ball striking ability, but he told me hybrids aren't just for hackers. A lot of them on the market combine the workability of an iron with the playability of the wood and they don't all focus on forgiveness (He plays the Titty 585-H)

My bad, I assumed you had an Adams.

I can hit long irons, just not 220+ yards consistently.

It is VERY rare that I have anything more than a 6 iron into a green. (Assuming I hit a solid drive) So for me, I'm more interested in a club to hit off the tee on the short par 4s that will keep me in the fairway and still give me good distance. I want something workable, because not every short par 4 I play is a dead straight hole. I can't hit a 270 yard 2 iron that never gets over 20 feet high like Tiger, so this should work perfectly. I used to have the Titty 503H driving iron, but I hated the offset and huge sole on it. Offset drives me crazy. How is the 585 working for you?

It's pretty good. The only thing I don't try with it is a punch. It actually gets me in trouble sometimes because I think I can hit it out of any lie.
At the SPCC, I use it off about 3-4 tees. As Omen can attest, the Super doesn't have a ton of really long par 4's, but it's tighter than your mom's cooch in Junior High. Well, it's tighter than that, but you get the picture.

(honestly, some newer resort-type courses where the holes are far apart, understand using a cart. But when I see guys younger than me at a muni where the tees are three steps off the last green driving a cart, I just shake my head. Get some exercise, tubby!)[/QUOTE]

Gotta disagree with you there. I'm in the gym 6 days a week. I run about 30 miles a week. I lift 5 days a week. I don't go to the course to get exercise. I go to the course to relax, meet people, enjoy the outdoor air, and have fun. I go to the gym to lose my gut. I can bench 130% of my weight and squat 2.5x my weight. I can run a 5K in 22 minutes. I'm sure I'm at least in the top half of the members on this board in all 3 categories. I'm probably in the top 10%. I don't need to carry my clubs around on the course. Resort, muni, or otherwise.

If you're going to golf for the workout, then have at it. I applaud you. But don't lump me in with everyone else, and don't diss anyone for riding just because you don't like to.

I have to agree with you here. As a gym rat, if you want to walk fine, but if you need it for exercise...I'll wrestle you for $100.

I am lanky and weak. I might as well just send you a check right now. The tubby comment was not directly specifically at anyone, I just know too many guys who don't get any other exercise, complain about how they've put on 25 pounds since high school, and then insist on taking a cart on the flat dog tracks we play. And maybe I'm just angry because I'm a cheap bastard and I don't like them trying to get me to fork out an extra $15 for cart when I prefer to walk anyway.

    a. Has my respect for dedication.

    b. Needs to get a life.

LOL. I'm not as dedicated as you may think. I'm in the USAF, and we get an hour of gym time every day @ work. Then I'll hit my treadmill on Sunday night while watching football/golf @ home.

Where I play I regularly see 20 to 25 year old lard arses who have never seen the inside of a gym and wouldn't know what to do with a pair of running shoes riding around in carts. I can totally agree that these guys don't appreciate what golf is all about. To gym junkies like Frank, it's a bit easier to accept the explanation of taking a cart as a matter of choice. But most guys I see in carts are young, lazy slobs who are more interested in drinking and yahooing than playing golf and drive carts because they are either too hungover or too drunk (or usually both) to walk (the course or to the bar for another six pack for the back nine). I personally choose to walk because I like the exercise of walking the course, and I find I play better golf when I walk. I think your muscles can stay warm from walking. And when walking I can stretch and have practice swings while waiting between shots. In a cart I tend to just sit on my arse waiting for my next shot.

I'll agree with you about walking keeping muscles warm. There's an exec course near my home that I play that I'll walk. There's only six par 4's, and they're cart path only anyways, plus they're short. I don't take any woods and only the irons I need for that course, so I'm playing about 8 clubs at that course (Desert Willow - a very nice exec).

I'll also walk in the first week of October after overseeding when all of the courses around here are path only. I find it to be quicker to do this than to trudge half my bag back and forth from the fairway to the cart.

Of course I'll admit that I'm a little wiped after 18 holes and a full bag.

Now that's what I call a job! I wish I had a job where they encouraged physical fitness. The only exercise I get these days is push ups and sit ups during the add breaks at home at night. But push ups and sit ups are surprisingly good for strength work. Just wish I had a chin up bar somewhere close by as chin ups really do wonders for upper body strength.

frank i did 6 years active for the USAF.... i remember the good old gym hour... i used to do the racquetball thing... those were the brillant days at CANNON.... in ... well never mind...

it's actually home to the course that i started playing golf on... whispering winds.... ahhh i remember it well...

it's where the LEGEND OF OMEN begins... it will end at Augusta... or maybe ST.Andrews... with omen hoisting the claret jug or donning a green jacket... only time will tell...

... what was i talking about... oh yeah USAF... so where you at what do you do and what's your Rank? if you are special forces tracking down osama and other al quieda, dont tell us anything, except where you are, how large your contingency is, your plan of attack, and the ETA upon said insurgents.

That's why I prefer walking. But I won't give up my 5 days in the gym - 3-4 at an hour thirty each the rest at three quarters. You should see the tight asses on some of these girls.

    That's cool Omen!

I've been in 13 years and I'm an E-6. Not special forces - I'm just a desk-jockey intel analyst. Of course, it's not the chair force of yester year really. Annual PT tests, mandatory workouts, the whole bit. Not a bad deal, though I guess.

You were in Cannon? No wonder you are EX-AF, lol. I spent 5 years in Alaska. I learned how to play at Eagle Glenn at Elmendorf. Spent 6 years at Langley AFB. Got married and put the clubs down for 8 years. Just picked up the game this past summer in NV, where I've been for 2 years. All of my buddies play, and kind of got me back into it. I hit a 119 my first time out on father's day and just about quit. I think 1 bogie that day was my best hole.

Stuck with it though and hit an 87 (on a par 70 course) this afternoon, my best personal round to date. I guess looking back, that's a 32 shot difference!! LOL!!!!! No birdies, but no triples either, and just 3 doubles. I'm hoping to be shooting mid-to-low 80's this summer like my buddies.

Of course, I'm using a hybrid, but I only pulled it out of the bag twice today. Oh yeah, I'm also using GI CB shovels :-), but hey, I don't have a 2-ball putter (or a 3-ball putter), so I get a little credit!!!

What did you do in the service? Enlisted or O?

E of course or i wouldnt have spent 5 years to the day at cannon.

i was f16 aviation electronics.... automated test equipment kind of guy.... Maintenance of course...

yeah they were employing the new pt program right as i got out (aug 04) and so i am familiar with the push up, sit up, 1.5 mile timed run requirements.

as a fellow AIRMAN, i will take the time and effort to get you into MAN clubs... we fly boys take enough of a beating as it is, we dont need hybrids and callaways to add to the problem.

I will have you in MIZUNO sticks before it's all said and done.

the way this will work best is if you listen to me now and believe me later.

    Omen

i got out at staff.... cannon is a painful memory and with therapy i am working past it.

Okay I got rid of it.

Hit my 3i four times today:
    - first one was a bad slice out of a buried lie in deep dead dry rough (par 5/2nd shot) about 250 out. Was behind 2 trees and had to keep the shot low. I didn't make a great swing, but not a terrible one. I was in the right rough and the slice ended up in the left rough, so the result wasn't horrible. Missed the green on approach and 3-putted for a double.
    - Second was from a light, right rough area about 205 out after tree-ing my tee shot on a par 4. Faded it about 185 onto fairway. Didn't hit my 5w because the green area was tight, surrounded by a lake on one side and the driving range on the other. Got up/down for par.
    - Third was from a waste area trying to punch out to fairway (was about 180 out). It only carried/rolled about 100 yards - not a great shot (topped it a little) but not a terrible one. Bogied hole.
    - Fourth was from 195 out on fairway/par 5/2nd shot. Pured it to within 18 feet and holed the eagle putt.

For the day, I was 2/4 with the club with no horrible results and two good results. I'll keep the hybrid in the den on my next outing too, I guess, and see what happens.

2 out of 4 from a hard to hit club; probably about average for most people. I can certainly hit my 3 iron quite well a lot of the time, but it's just a matter of better odds IN MY HANDS with different clubs. Have fun with the 3 iron. Experiment. You might like it and keep it in your bag, or you might decide it's costing you more strokes that it's saving. It's not like any of us are going to lose our tour cards if we screw up a few shots here and there. It's also not like any of us are going to make it to the tour if we work extra hard hitting particular clubs, either. Enjoy the game. For 99.999% of us, it's simply an enjoyable recreational opportunity anyway.
