Shaft weights?

I've been wondering why someone would use an 85 gram shaft instead of a 60 gram shaft on a driver. Is it a question of increasing swing weight or is there really no good reason to pick a heavier shaft?

Swingweight is one reason. I prefer at least a 70 gram shaft and like my driver swingweight in the D3-D4 range. Heavier shafts also help some with their tempo.

Some heavier shafts have less torque and are a bit stiffer than lighter weights.

85 grams is pretty heavy for a driver shaft. 65-75 grams seems to be the norm on tour. I know Camilo Villegas plays a 65 gram shaft and Im pretty sure Tiger does too, unless he recently changed.

Tiger plays the 85g Diamana blueboard in his driver and the 105g in his 3 wood.
Many tour pro's play driver shafts in excess of 85g. Sergio's driver shaft is nice 105g model.

Went to Golf Superstore today, came out with a HiBore 13* tour three wood... X shaft, in the Fujikura Fit On Red... they're selling numerous X shafts in their display woods, and only Nike was showing the odd X in a driver or two. No other Xs that I could see.

I was fiddling with the 16* xls hybrid, and laid it on the floor next to the three wood.

handles in the air, club toes on the floor, I pressed down, about the same pressure on both grips.. the shafts deflected about the same amount, which was very ittle.

This proves to me that my 16* hybrid, claiming to be S, actually plays more like X.

And I hit that thing dead center of the club every time, a wonderful result.

Now I want to take the driver up to the X shaft. I'll have a Fit On Red S shaft pulled out and left over, of course, and I wonder if it could be trimmed and jammed into my Wilson Dh6 19* hybrid.

Anybody manage to decode this one.? Advice?

Then it would have the same effective shaft as the HiBore hybryd does.

Wow, a wealth of misinformation in 1 post.

Shaft weight in itself has no direct correlation with spin rates. Many heavier shafts have stiffer tips (though many dont) which will have a direct effect on spin rates because a stiffer tip will reduce forward shaft deflection at impact, which reduces effective loft. Forward shaft deflection at impact is what causes more or less spin when it comes to the shafts roll in spin. The shaft has no other way of affecting spin rates, as spin is directly related to loft. More loft = more spin, plain and simple.

It has also been proven with the use of high speed camera's and the trackman launch monitor that a descending blow with the driver causes no more spin than a level or upward angle of attack. This was proven by hotstix and then verified by Wishon.

Heavier shafts will affect players tempo and swing plane. Not all heavy shafts are stiffer than soft shafts and vice versa. Most players with fast swing speeds and fast tempos fair better with heavier shafts and higher swing weights. There is however no hard and fast rule to this.
