i would suggest working on creating some width in your swing. you have to make it feel like you are reaching out about 1/2 way back. this should help create a sweeping motion. takes lots of practice to where you do not think about it. you could also check your set-up to the ball - are you bent over a lot? are you dipping down on the downswing?

I struggled with this until a buddy suggested I read Hogans 5 Fundamentals book. That really helped with plane. Also, and as mentioned, create width and swing around your body versus up. Take a baseball swing, which is primarily horizontal in nature and gradually work the club down towards the ground. The swing should be around your body. Vision a plane of glass going from the ball up thru your neck. Swing below that and right up to that pane of glass, just not over it.

Take a look at the Hogan book, it really helped me. Just my honest novice opinion.

Well if you want to shallow out your swing, then work on swinging longer clubs like woods a few inches off the ground repeatedly back and through. Do you take really deep divots?

speaking of drills... i have trouble hitting down on the ball and tend to try to lift it and hence pick it cleanly off the grass... any ideas for helping to swing down and get a divot

I would say to make sure your hands are ahead of the clubhead through the hitting zone on your practice swings to get that feeling before your actual shot.
