    2008 Ryder Cup

With just about a month left until the Ryder Cup, let’s get some predictions going. I was really thinking that team USA was going to dominate, even without Tiger. However, after seeing Padraig and Sergio play some pretty incredible golf down the stretch at The PGA (while most of the American players stumbled) I am getting a little concerned. Looking at the results from The PGA, there were only 5 Americans in the top 19 (+7 or better). The players for Team USA need to step up their games if they want to have a chance at getting the cup back.

Take a look at the players’ records for Europe vs. USA on RyderCup.com. Out of the players that have been in the last few Ryder Cups, USA only has 3 players with better than 50% Point Percentage. Scott Verplank is at 0.80 with a record of 4-1-0. Tom Lehman and Corey Pavin are the next closest at 0.60. Then you have J.J. Henry and Chris Riley right at 0.50. Everyone else is 0.44 or lower. Tiger is at 0.44 and Phil is at 0.43. No wonder USA has lost 5 out of the last 6 Ryder Cups. The European team has 12 players with better than a 0.50 point percentage. That is just complete and total domination.

    So, make your predictions:

    1) Who will be the captain’s picks for each team?
    2) What team will win and by what point tally?
    3) Who will be the top players on each team?
    4) Who will be the strongest 2 man teams?

I just realized that the European qualification does not end until August 31st, so it might be too soon to speculate about a lot of this. I guess we can can still start the trash talking!

Team USA is already done, except for the captain's picks:

    1. Phil Mickelson
    2. Stewart Cink
    3. Kenny Perry
    4. Jim Furyk
    5. Anthony Kim
    6. Justin Leonard
    7. Ben Curtis
    8. Boo Weekley
9-12 Azinger will announce on September 2nd

I definitely think Europe will win it comprehensively this year. I am waiting for Wie to put herself forward for the Ryder ;)

Wie will have to prove herself in the womens ranks first beofre going for the Ryder Cup, just like she did on the LPGA tour. Having her arse handed to her in the next 2 Solheim Cups should do it.

Good Point. Looks like it will be straight into the Ryder Cup then.

    Does Nike sponsor that event?

Michelle Wie does not need a sponsor's exemption from Nike to get into the Ryder Cup, Azinger will make her a captain's pick. He is sponsored by Nike and has a clause in his contract that he must pick her.

I've promised Lorenzo that I will become an ugly American during the Ryder Cup.
The US side will CRUSH those Euros into the ground. Kenny Perry's record in the majors is impressive, so he and his monster-sized head will lead us to glory!!!

Your becoming an ugly American during the Ryder Cup is like Rosie O'Donnell becoming a dyke during the gay pride parade.

Kenny Perry will lose each match, hitting tee shots in the water on alternate ball to pi$$ off his partner, leaving six foot par putts for him, that kind of thing. Kenny's family in Kentucky will wear paper bags to the final two days play, in which they hope Kenny is benched.

I agree, Dave. I think Kentucky as a state will end up replacing Arkansas as the shitehole of America. BJ will be forced to move his trailer.

bullshiite. we are the armpit of america, not the shitehole. that distinction belongs to mississippi.

I would get my arse kicked if I moved the trailer, state prison inmates are only allowed to make conjugal visits to your mom here.

If he had a trailer to move. His taped together cardboard boxes wouldn't move very well.

Dave I am thoroughly dissapointed in you. You are being far to kind to Kenny Perry (it's just in your nature I guess) but you need to grow some testicalia, KP is a fluke and will be the skidmark of the US team. Europe will probably save their players and use a marker to play against Kenny in the singles matches.

It's tempting I'll admit, but I think it would be bad strategy. He could find his comfort zone playing against a nobody.

Azinger has made his Captain's Choices:

    Chad Campbell
    Steve Stricker
    Hunter Mahan
    J.B. Holmes

Sticker wasn't that much of a shocker. Got bumped out of the top 8 after Ben Curtis had a great showing at the PGA. Curtis has also been in the mix at the last two events so he's ramping up his game, let's just hope it stays around the next two weeks. Campbell and Holmes were a bit of a surprise. JB Holmes being the much bigger surprise.

Azinger says the course is gonna be an open setup, here's hoping.

I gotta believe that Holmes was chosen at least partly because he is from Kentucky. This will bring some local knowledge to the team. He supposedly knows the course very well. He'll also probably bring a lot of local supporters out there. The galleries always play a big part in the Ryder Cup matches, so this should help Team USA. I don't think his play has been all that noteworthy. His collapse in the final round of The PGA (81 ouch!) would have been a deal breaker for most.

I think Stricker was a very solid choice.
