Christmas has come early down under

The news has just broke that Big John D is coming to Australia for this weeks Australian Masters.

Unfortunately it's in Melbourne so I won't be able to see the great man in person, but I'll get to watch him on tv and he should get plenty of camera action as he is one of the big draw cards. It's been a few years since he's been here but I can only hope for another vintage Daly performance. Last time he was here he tossed his ball and putter into a lake and walked off the course without signing his card and got a DQ (said putter and ball were fished out of the lake and are mounted in the pro shop). He then went straight to the blackjack tables at a nearby casino where he proceeded to lose the rest of his appearance fee. He's been here a few times now and I don't think he's even made a weekend cut yet. We can only hope to see another virtuoso performance from the big fella this week.

I almost get choked up just thinking about it. Australia is one country where Daly's greatness off the course is fully appreciated.

Be glad we aren't getting all of the government we're paying for.

Not sure about the Hooters but if Daly is going there for a tournament I would imagine they do have one as he needs a contingency plan for rain delays. No need for a drunk tank, they have a 24 hour casino.

Come on Hacker, if you're such a big fan surely you can make the short trip from Sydney to Melbourne to see the great man in person.

I accept Perth is out of the question but sh*t mate you could drive that distance!!!
I chose the road less traveled.

Now where the f#ck am I?

They certainly do. They had the first one here about ten years ago but it closed down after a dsicrimination case about the uniforms before I had a chance to go there. The new one I know of is in western Sydney and has been open about 2 years but haven't gone there yet myself.

I know there are probably some 30 cappers on this forum who could drive it that far but I'd at least need a drive/mid iron But seriously, it's still a return flight and accommodation, which is a bit tough so close to Christmas. Not to mention how hard it would be to get a leave pass for 4 days just to watch a golf tournament. If I went I think I'd be on the lookout for a family law lawyer upon my return.

I'll just keep my fingers crossed he comes to Sydney for the Open, as I could duck out there during work time on the practice day. That would be cool.

Back in '79, my dad invited me to play with him in the "doodlebug" (geophysicist's) Open in West Texas.

We started drinking beer about an hour before tee time, and didn't stop 'til we were on the 18th green. I have no idea how much we drank, but it was way more than ten each, probably closer to twenty in the six hours we were out there.

We were both weaving around on the 18th green, him with a ten footer and me with eight feet left... his putt was for 78 and so was mine. :-)

    He made, I missed. DOH!

That was the drunkest I've ever been on the course, but looking around, I don't think we were the drunkest in the tourney....

it smooths the swing really well, but preshot routine goes to he11. :-)

I now claim that day from history and dedicate it to the memory of Daly, John, 1966-2009.

    LOL

Yeah I guess you are right and with an event like that on accommodation would be hard to come by too.

You'd have a better chance of seeing JD in the Hooters' parking lot than a practice round. Well unless it's an open bar at the practice round. It's hard work to be an f-up and you can't let practice get in the way of a good train wreck.

Seriously, he's not even good at being a drunk. He must have a trunk full of demons to be this much of a phuck up. What a waste.

Rank amateur compared to George Best (Football Hero, Womaniser and Drinking Legend)

When asked what he had spent his millions on he replied

"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."

He was a true drinking class legend. Daly, whilst good remains a pretender.

Another Irish sporting legend to come to mind in the drinking stakes is snooker player Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins. I think the Irish are the masters of alcohol fuelled self destruction who could teach JD a thing or two about ruining your life, but keep in mind that big John's middle name is Patrick so the pedigree is there.

He might be all those things, but he's still the patron saint of GR, and would be the first player picked in any self respecting GR member's fantasy foursome.

Hacker, get your @ss to Melbourne. You can probably get a part time job with Daly as his driver or whore-finder to cover your costs.

Dave, that's a pretty aggressive death timeline for Daly. Vegas odds have him even money in 2011.

It's gonna kill me not going to Melbourne, especially considering the Vegas predictions on how much longer we will get to see him live, but it's just not do-able at the moment.

Speaking of Vegas, big John really is the golfing equivalent of Elvis during his Vegas years. His life is a travellng roadshow. From now on John Daly should only ever be referred to as 'the King' on GR threads. Should I start a poll to ratify it?

Best, for some unknown reason, was given a liver from somebody who DIDN"T abuse it.. and in the end he drank himself to death even with the new liver.

Daly now has a REAL role model.

I'm factoring in the monster gut, you know, cholesterol, arterial plaque, circulatory inflammation and heart disease not directly related to the drinking.

    I"m sticking with 2009.
