I have the MP Fli-Hi and love it. It is not as easy to hit as a hybrid, but it is more workable than a hybrid. Mizuno sells a hybrid if that is what you are looking for, but the MP Fli-Hi is an MP iron with a wider sole. I have the Fli-Hi and it will always be in my bag simply because I hit an Albatross with it the first time I ever used it. But, I just want you to understand that it is not really hybrid, but more like an innovative 3 iron.

Not quite the whole story, Sooner.

If that were the case, and it were still made entriely of steel as it is, it would be a sledgehammer, not a golf club. For a solid club to have a sole that wide, it would have to be completely scooped out in the back like an old Spalding Executive or super shallow-faced like an old Browning 440..

The MP Fli-Hi is just like my Epon AF-901--it's hollow.

The mini-fairway wood kind of utility is the actual hybrid.

The hollow iron type of utility is, well, a hollow iron. It's still an iron.

    The Fli-Hi s come in 18, 21, and 24° and are numbered 2, 3, and 4 (even though they're really 1, 2, and 3).

The AF-901s come in 19, 22, and 25° and are unnumbered.

Other than that, they're pretty similar. I just have a thing for unnumbered.

I tried a hybrid before. The feel is not as same as hitting irons on the sweet spot. So, at the moment, I am not opting for hybrid.

Yesterday, I tried MP Fli-Hi is kinda heavy. The wide sole might decrease club versatility. I have not tried MP52 3 iron yet. But in case of MP52 4 iron, I have no problem. I am afraid I couldn't hit a wide sole irons well.

trick question... the fli hi is not a 3 iron so the 3 iron that accompanies the mp 57 set is the only option you really gave ergo the mp57 3 iron is the answer.

The Fli-Hi has a great big "3" stamped on it, just like the MP57, MP-52, MP-60, or any other MP 3-iron.

None of them are true 3-irons in terms of what a three iron used to be for most of the time that the term "3-iron" has been used. But the Fli-Hi is every bit as much as a 3-iron as the MP-57 is.

hi i have a question, what if you wanted that "3 iron" to fli-lo instead of fli-hi? does that mean you're screwed?

Yes. Of course, I don't understand why people want to hit low iron shots.

Maybe it's because I'm retired and can play whenever I want (during our short golf season, that is). If it's really blowing out there, I just go straight to the bar and shoot the breeze with whomever is around for a while. Talk a little Red Sox or something. Then I go back home to my beagle (oh, and my wife too, I suppose).

Tomorrow is another day, and I'm not looking for special challenges at this point.

yeah it's not like you ever have to hit a long iron under a tree or into the wind or anything.

i have a cleveland LDI which is basically the same as the fli-hi... i like it but dont really ever finding myself in a situation to use it... i may use it 1-2 every 2-3 rounds.... it is nice though... i think on this one it comes down to a matter of preference...

If I want to hit it low, I just widen my swing. If I want to hit it high, I swing down on the ball more. I can do that with just about all my irons.

    The Fli-Hi is a versatile weapon in any golfer's bag . . . . . . kind of like the Thriver.

i know GR members have excruciatingly high IQs:

which of the following does not belong in the group:

    1. thriver
    2. fli-hi
    3. 3 iron
    4. elton john
    5. unitized

    Well, here's the thing, bj.

One, as Lorenzo said, great head is expensive.

Two, my gap in irons goes from 19° to 27° (Miura) or 26° (new CGTs). I don't have anything remotely resembling a three-iron in my bag.

I can hit a hooded five iron. If I can get my driving iron on the ball to hit a line drive, it's not going anywhere but low having been hit off the deck.

But what the hell would I be doing among the trees anyway? I hit driver on four holes-- all with landing areas that can hold a WalMart. Otherwise, I hit a nice little two hundred shot with my drving iron, straight as a die, and play my approach from a nice, flat, lie on the fairway. Golf is such an easier game when you play that way.

lol that might be when teeing off the senior tees. it's a little different from the tips of 7200 yard layouts.

here's my home track. i'd like to see little 2 hundred yard pokes on these par 4s, only to pull out your thriver for the second shot to even reach the green.

I wouldn't join a club whose track was too long for my game, BJ.
It's true that I couldn't hit some of those par 4s, playing from the tips, after a 200 drive with my Epon. But where I actually play, I can. Lucky me, I guess!!!

Omen, what's your point? Everyone understood the initial post except you I guess. No Idea wanted to know if he should get a 52 3 iron or a Hi-Fli. No one told him a Fli-Hi was a 3 iron. So, I guess I don't understand what your point is . . . . .

the point is one is a 3 iron and one is a hybrid driving iron something... there's nothing similar about them. if you're in the market for something shouldn't the products be similar that you are choosing between?

i want a car should i get the toyota camry or the m1 abrahams tank?

    similarly retarded right.

Sorry, Omen, but in this case, they're both three irons. The MP Fli-Hi is NOT a hybrid. It's a hollow-head, 21° three-iron. It's a utility because it's not part of a full set, but it's an iron, part of the MP forged iron series--and nothing else. The CLK Fli-Hi is a hybrid..

Do you think they are both going to hit the ball along the same distance? I thought that was what he was really looking for is trying to decide what club to buy that is going to fill the gap for that distance.

Too late. I was busy. I should have read the remaining of the thread a bit sooner. Well, I bought the MP Fli Hi. I replaced the Exsar IS2 Regular with a NS Pro 950GH Stiff. Here is what I found so far..

    1. the club is lighter than my 4 iron MP52. the weight of my 4 iron MP52 feels better
    2. the ball flight is seldom straight. most of the time, hook and draw
    3. i can't get the expected distance
    4. what a waste of money

NI, try setting up a little closer to the ball and playing the shot closer to the hosel. I've discovered that the sweet spot on this club is closer to the hosel. Just try it.

As for your weight differential, you would have been better off leaving in the Exsar shaft. The Exsar shaft is actually heavier than the NS Pro 950GH I believe.

Damn BJ, when I saw the still shot of a lefty standing under trees surrounded by hospitality tents I immediately thought I was about to relive Mickelmoobs choke job at Winged Foot.

Awesome shot from Bubba though. I could hear the commentator saying something about needing the putt to get in playoff with Kenny Perry. Please tell me he sunk the putt and stomped KP in the playoff.

i recommend getting a REAL 3 IRON.... the old adage of the RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB comes to mind...

Some on here do not apply logic into everything they say...He said he wanted a 3 iron... not to fill a gap but a 3 iron....

Well, i have to save up some more money to buy a real 3 iron.. @#$%@#. In golf, a bad decision is costly.

I went to a clubfitter and found out the weight of MP Fli Hi is actually heavier than my 4 iron MP 52. The lie angle is adjusted to 4* flatter. hopefully that will cure the hook and draw. At least, I can get the club working for the time being.

Probably this should be the proper thread. I just got MP52 3 iron yesterday. Here is the comparison:

The MP Fli-Hi: since the head is heavier, it feels more whippy - though the shaft is the same as my 4 iron.

MP52 3 iron: feels like my MP52 4 iron. Easier to hit due to narrow sole.

Tested MP52 3 iron on a round of 18 yesterday. Definitely, it's better than MP Fli-Hi 3 iron. The distance is farther. Unlike the popular believe, it is easier to find the sweet spot of MP52 3 iron than that of MP FLi-Hi 3 iron.
