Anyone have any thoughts on Titleist 690 CB irons?

A co worker of mine has an offer for a fair trade of an older set of my Nike CCi irons for his set of Titelist 690 forged CBs. All of the monetary considerations are fair (the Nikes cost a little more these days so he is pitching in some cash to offset any financial inequities), and I have tested the 690s, and they are in great shape.

Does anyone have any thoughts on these irons; good or bad? I dont necessarily want to trade just because of a great demo at the range. They seem like more of a player's iron with a traditional look than what I am playing now..

Pretty much I am just looking to see that the clubs have the same appeal to one's game a few years down the road as they do now. I have gone through some clubs that had a great honeymoon but I fell out of favor with them in following seasons (though that tends to be the case with woods/hybrids/putters than with wedges and irons).

I played these for two years and they were excellent. I really like players cavity backs because they are small like a blade or muscle back but still offer a bit of forgiveness. You can't go wrong with those, they're pretty classic. I wore mine out and got a deal on some MacGregor VIP blades and am now playing some Clevelands. I think their current version of these is the Z Blend.

The 690cb is one if the best player cavities Titleist have ever made IMO. Extremely solid feel and very workable. Very traditional simple design and have a great mid-tradjectory. Good feedback as to where the ball is hit on the face but still forgiving on miss-hits. Not super forgiving but very good for a club that sets up like a blade. The 690 dot (later model) is supposed to have a thicker more durable chrome finish. As far as trade goes the only thing I would say is that these are readily available cheap as they were very popular when they first came out. I think 690s were 2003-2004 and the dots were 2004-2005.

    CC,

OP hit on the screws with his comments and offers sound advice. I hit these after I got my 690.MBs and while slightly more forgiving, they still produced shots similar to what I was getting with my MBs. Very crisp, solid, great feeling shots. As for availability, I used to see a pretty fair number of sets on Ebay over a year ago but not sure about now.

    Good luck.

    Thanks everyone.

I had a second round at the range with them, and they are definitely solid. I am going ahead with the trade. My co worker is throwing in some cash or a box of Pro V1s to help offset any monetary inequalities. The Nike CCIs were a good player's cavities, but these Titleists just are that much softer in feel.
