    I've advocated this for years . . . .

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100308/hl_nm/us_food_tax

We don't need an income tax. All we need to do is tax the things that are mostly harmful to people and that they think they can't live without. Soda pop, pizza, fast food in general, alcohol and tobacco (which we tax already), candy bars, Little Debbie's snack cakes, ice cream, etc.

We'd likely cover our national debt in a year's time and help a few people to change their lives. As it stands right now, we're not doing either. Guarantee you though that this would never happen because the food lobbyist are too appealing to the politicians.

All this does is raise the price of these items. Plus, these items are legal and it's unfair practice to tax a manufacturer just because certain people deem the products to be unhealthy. The problem is that you could make the argument that eating a candy bar once a week is perfectly fine and not necessarily unhealthy. It's the same stupid argument people make about one glass of wine a day being healthy. That's one 8 ounce glass of wine people. Have you seen today's wine glasses? If you pour wine into one of today's large wine glasses you're looking at about 20 ounces or more. Let's be honest, most people don't stop at one glass. Alcohol is poison to your body and is a toxin to your liver. If you want to go ahead and do it fine, just be honest about it and don't cover it up with a lie about how it's healthy for you.

You know the argument I really hate? Indian Casinos. They say it creates tax revenue and jobs. You know what it really does? It feeds people's addictions and sucks the money out of the lower class. You don't see middle and upper class people at Indian Casinos. You see people that are desperate and are hoping that their luck is going to turn around. Just like the lottery it's all a joke. There's so much hypocracy out there it's scary.

People who smoke and have no health insurance cost this country billions of dollars every year. Same with morbidly obese people. Do you really think people will eat better or eat less because you tax the items they consume?

If you want to lower the debt then you need to cut spending and cut programs. People are going to need to suffer. It's the only way to change behavior. Cut welfare, cut unemployment and get rid of workman's compensation. Let's make our local industry competitive again. Let people really see what it means to be out of work. Get rid of minimum wage. Obama never should have bailed out the banks or the companies. We should have let economics take it's course. There would have been huge suffering but we'd be better off in the long run. Maybe people would get back to working hard for a living.

I generally hate taxes, but I'd like to see a 'hiker tax'. How many millions of our tax dollars are spent rescuing these jack-holes every year that go hiking and get lost, break an ankle, or end up is some sort of predicament. You want to explore caves? Fine, go ahead. However, don't expect me to pay for your brain injury when you fall 200 feet and don't die. You want to jump out of a helicopter and ski? Great! Just be prepared to pay for your own rescue, medical bills, and the medical bills for all the poor saps stuck in the avalanche you created.

In addition, technology has made activities like driving cars too safe in my opinion. More people should be dying in car wrecks. Today's safety features (airbags, ABS, stability control, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, etc.) allow these idiots to drive around yapping on their cell phones, crash their cars, and walk away unscathed. Darwin must be turning over in his grave. These people are supposed to have been removed from the gene pool...

Believe me, there are a lot of scumbags in this state that I would like to see it get stuck to. Still, my stand is similar to what FD eluded to and that is that everything should be done and taken in moderation. They tax my Irish whiskey I drink, so I have one drink at night before I go to bed. That's called moderation. The masses have not learned this lesson and are not likely to as long as we keep making shite easy for them to obtain and do. How is it right to demand a person needs to be 21 in order to drink, but it's OK for a 300 pound man or woman who is clearly obese to go and order and eat 4 quarter pounders with cheese at one setting?

Before anyone comes in shouting, "This is a free country and that measure would suppress our rights!" Let me just ask you this, if it's a free country, then why can't I take off all my clothes, run naked down main street, and bone my wife right in the middle or rush hour traffic? OK, maybe you can do that in Seattle, but everywhere else in America IT ISN'T FREE! There has to be some logical regulations to living or too many people will go butt wild.

Which eventually leads to my second solution: legalize and make accessible all drugs and narcotics in the United States. Allow them to be obtained without a doctor's prescription. And, deny hospital access to anyone suffering a drug overdose.

Talk about eliminating the dregs of society . . . . . . . plus, I've always wanted to try marijuana.

MJ has its place. It will expand your mind in some good ways. The problem I see is too many use it as an escape and form a dependency. Occasionally you can find a woman who can almost explode having sex on it but not get anywhere near that point without it. I like to keep some around for them.

The problem with this is that there are some drugs, like Oxycodin, that become literally addictive after the 3rd or 4th try. Are you suggesting that we make all drugs legal so that there are no longer any prescriptions? I don't think it would make sense for me to be able to go down to the corner market to buy some Heroine but I need a doctor's prescription for Cialis.

It will never happen. Not everyone is wired the same and some people are very addictive by nature. It's not a matter of moderation or willpower for them. I'm talking millions of people. It wouldn't get rid of crime either because thugs are thugs. They'd find something else to do that's illegal to get something for nothing. I'm not sure what the answer is.

One thing is for certain, if the government gives people money who sit at home and do nothing then they will continue to do so until they stop getting money.

Good Post! This is just another excuse to take more from people's wallets! It seems every "do gooder" cause now is an excuse to generate more funding for our wasteful government! Nobody ever revisits these stupid bills to see if they're succeeding at what they were trying to accomplish. We get stuck with them and nothing ever changes!

Don't believe for a second that those people don't get a bill for those rescues. They also get the hospital bill afterwards. The problem is they can't pay for it and we end up paying for it because doctors pass these costs on to people that have insurance by padding their bills!

Once you did that, you'd change your mind about these proposed taxes of yours.
