Golf is a skills game like billiards, bowling and car racing. There is not enough athletic ability exerted in the sport to be qualified as a sport. Plus, whenever you have players like the Walrus and Herron in the game, it would sully the use of the term, "sport."

Find it interesting that chariot racing began in the South, same as NASCAR. And many fans only watched to see the carnage of the wrecks, same as NASCAR. I'd like to see a stock car hit a horse at 190mph and see the carnage. That would be a sport.

I don't think car racing belongs in this group. Unless you are specifically talking about NASCRAP. Real race cars turn left AND right AND use their brakes before going through at least some of the corners. Michael Schumacher is probably one of the finest athletes to ever walk the earth. Not only does he have superhuman hand-eye coordination and reflexes, but he has the strength and stamina to drive a 2 hour race in a 130 degree cockpit and barely break a sweat. Driving an F1 car, as well as many road racing cars, is quite the physical feat.

Sure NASCRAP drivers were traditionally fat, out of shape rednecks, but even NASCAR drivers need to be in pretty good shape to compete now. I don't really keep up with it, but the little I have seen of the top drivers, they are pretty fit now.

Sorry, KC, but "sports" that require a person to sit on their "arse" for the full event, are not SPORTS.

The many definitions of 'sport' :

    - an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition .

    - the occupation of athletes who compete for pay .

    - an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively .

You've obviously never driven a race car of any kind. It requires a lot of upper body strength and endurance. F1 drivers neck sizes can change by a couple inches from the off season to the end of the racing season. Those guys are some of the most fit athletes in the world.

None of these definitions are inclusive for what constitutes an activity as being a TRUE sport. If you ever want to know if an activity is a TRUE sport, just run it by me and I will gladly tell you whether it is or not. This is a much surer way than trying to interpret definitions.

    You're welcome.

Yes it is. Thanks for asking. Also, if you do this while naked, it is then considered an "Extreme" sport and qualifies you for the upcoming X Games.

I can't believe I left the naked part out. Suffice it to say your powers of understanding are impressive and qualify you for this role. Be back to you with more scenarios.

Also, for those who would like to get a proper perspective of the difference, Tiger recently moved from a skills game to becoming a true athlete whenever he started bagging all those babes. It's a game that is hard to find current stats on, but the goal of the game is to see how many women you can sleep with (this is both an aerobic and anaerobic activity) before your wife plants a 9 iron up the side of your head. I believe Tiger now holds the record for this sport from those who have been able to survive the obvious dangers of the game.

I would argue that golf is indeed a sport as has been witnessed in the last 10 years. Slowly, the less athletic and smaller-sized individuals are being replace by bigger and stronger athletes.

Hell he is ! Taking down Tiger without breaking a sweat, coming up from behind him like a open-minded wife, and beating him down, a heck of a beast.

My point is that players like Tom Kite, Larry Mize and Corey Pavin have been replaced by more athletic and bigger players, in general.

Timm Herron and Charley Hoffman are certainly bigger, but I don't know about the "athletic" tag. Notah Begay III, Charles Howell, Paul Casey, Ben Crane, Brian Gay, Trevor Immelman, Anthony Kim, Ryan Moore, etc. These guys just LEAK size and athleticism, don't they?

FD, you can't make general statements about the whole tour. There are more non-athletic type players on Tour than athletic. The Tigers and Camillos are far and few between.

Golf is not a sport. My definition of a sport: a competitive activity that cannot be performed well by unalthetic fatassses.

All of those guys you mention look pretty athletic to me, except Ryan Moore. I guess you're right in that there are still a lot of guys from 5-8 to 5-10 on the tour that really don't appear as though they work out that much. Which begs the question...what great players in the past were probably all around great athletes? Nicklaus played basketball in high school and was a pretty good all around athlete despite his "fat boy" size in his early years. Palmer was a great athlete.

I didn't think golf was a sport either, but then they just voted Tiger Athlete of the Decade. If the participants are athlete's, it has to be a sport, doesn't it? Maybe not. Are pilots athletes? How about politicians? Pornstars? Cab drivers? The whole thing's f.ucking confusing.

Maybe Tiger got recognized for things he did outside golf.
