Sooner vs Big Dave updates thread

8 am... Thackerville, oklahoma... 55 degrees, clear, calm... High lower 80s... Hardly any wind expected... What a day!

Having coffee, cleaning clubs at the truckstop... Will meet dad at winstar in about an hour...

Hole by hole updates to follow, tee time 10:30... See previous match thread for link to golf course info, hole by hole graphics, etc...

What did you eat for breakfast? Did you use the truck wash area to clean your clubs or did you find a faucet somewhere? These are important facts.

Found out this am that, since the course closed in summer and they switched from bent to bermuda, new seeding, we are the very first playaz on the new greens... Kind of cool.. And also discovered that, as some here have predicted, sooner is baggin' the eye 2s.. Green dot.. Should be an interesting event! We can go a bit early, so probably in about fifteen minutes or so...

Friendly insider information: new bermuda greens are almost ALWAYS slow and won't be too receptive to spin. Which is weird, since they also feel soft.

It's called a sausage mcmuffin with egg and it's the #2 meal on the menu. I'm worried about you Dave. You're playing with tiny blades and you don't even know the name of what you ate. Did the meat still have marks where the jockey was kicking?

Hmm...Could make for an interesting day on the greens.

Oh man! I must have missed the part about the Eye 2's. Go Sooner! You need to do a couple of things to win this. 1) Take enough club every time and just focus on your target 2) keep it in play.

    I was tempted to give Sooner a stroke on 3, 6, 7, 13, and 15.

The betting started out at Dave winning 5 & 4. The line has dropped to 3 & 2 with Dave going blade and Sooner going shovel.

    Betting is now open.

I'll put $2 on Sooner, only because of the irons he's playing.

Dave wins 3 w bogey after snr tops 1 in fwy and 3 jacks from 85 ft for dbl.. AS after 3.. dave had driven into right side fairway bunker, hit 7 iron flush from the bunker, down fairway to left, and had six iron into the 597 yd par 5... but hit the six left of green and didn't get the pitch shot close enough...

Dave wins 4 with scramble per from cabbage after hook one iron off tee... Sooner 3 jacks frm 20 ft for bog.. Dave 1 up after 4... Sooner found my ball in the left side waste ground in about six inches of grass... I stretched some more tendons hacking it out to front of green and got it up and down...

Dave finally hits good iron shot, knockdown. 6 iron to ten ft on 165 yd par three 9th, misses bird but wins when sooner did not get up and down... Dave 3 up at turn...

8 was matching bogeys on a dogleg left short par 4... neither one of us could get close enough with the wedges to make par... sad.. :-)

It was never a contest once Sooner bagged the Eye 2's. Fatal mistake.

Mind you he likes the Cleveland Niblick and with the Eye 2's you're getting a whole bag of Niblicks.
I chose the road less traveled.

Dave two putts 10 for par after hitting frm deep cabbage.. got lucky with a tendon-stretching wedge from thick stuff, kept rolling until it was inside ten feet...
Sooner not good... Dave misses another short birdie on 11 but beats sooners bogey...

Dave now 5 up after 11. ... Dave is 6 over par..

The pings may not be working for him because of the things he's said about them in the past. That's how they work (or in this case don't work).

on 12th, Dave crushes a tee shot over the grass bunker on left, gets inside 150 for approach on uphill 420 yarder... was in front about forty feet short of hole off green after a flabby 8 iron, hit nice low grabby chip with 58* to tap-in distance for par, Sooner's par putt from 25 ft hits back of cup and pops out... ... Dave now 6 up and dormie on 13th tee....

today this golf course offered NO roll... all grass lush, most ground moist if not soggy, big long drives would stop in ten feet.. run up shots would stop in their own pitch marks.. you had to get it to the hole today and got NO help from any ground, either fairway or fringe..

Not really, Sooner has made it clear that he can shoot in the high 80's to low 90's. After seeing Dave's game, I can tell you that if Sooner normally shoots high 80's he has little to no chance against Dave. Dave is a golfer with the ability to shoot anywhere from 75 to 82 and anything above that would be considered a very bad day.

Dave goes right off the tee, a big drive but never had a chance of going straight... right of the big right side oak tree, right of the cart path.. and had another deep lie in the 2" rough.. risky bizness, hitting a straight shot out of that stuff.. water on left, trees on right.. coaxed one down the fairway though with 7 iron, and had PW to green from 110... hit that FG17 wedge perfectly to inside ten feet.. two putts for a par against sooners bogey (he played from the 12th fairway off the tee) to close it out on 13 at 7 and 5... Dave has five straight pars, playin it out......

    A 15 handicap isn't going to beat a 7 handicap.

Lets look at how a handicapped match would be going:

    Hole.......Dave.....Sooner......Straight Up.......Handicapped
    1 ...........+1..........+1............ - ....................... -
    2H.......... +1.......... /........... S +1..................S+1
    3H...........+1............+2........... - ................... S+1
    4 / +1 D +1 -
    5 +1 +2+ D +2 D+1
    6H +1 / D +1 -
    7H / +1 D +2 -
    8
    9 / +1 D +3 D+1

I'm not sure what you are saying but you're correct if no strokes are given. However, if the handicaps are correct and the high handicapper is given a number of strokes based on differential then the match should be pretty even.

They are playing straight up. I'm showing that it would have been more interesting if it was handicapped.

Dave is a golfer with the ability to shoot anywhere from 75 to 82 and anything above that would be considered a very bad day.
I swear I saw a post saying his last few rounds were below 80 and in the very low 80's and that he was in prime condition.

I'm a 12 and rarely shoot in the 70's. I think I've had 5 rounds below 80 this year out of 80 rounds. If I shoot 91-93 I've had a really bad day. I'm sure he said he was single digits cap.

In his last two GR sanctioned events he has shot over 90 each time (assuming he is around there today, from the sounds of it.

However since Sooner is bagging the Ping Eye 2s I have no sympathy.

The way Sooner was playing, I'm thinking Mr. Perkins would have won a solid 3&2

I think the handicap issue was negated by equipment. If it is a vanity cap then that makes sense, could be Sooner plays the same track everytime and doesn't have the abiity to adapt his game to a new course. Or Sooner just can't handle pressure and Dave is a good match player.

I think it may be reverse psychology at play here. Notice how Dave put the FG-17s into play and had a sausage mcmuffin from McDonalds. By doing this he put very little pressure on himself.

Sooner, on the other hand, put the best irons ever created in his bag and probably had granola or a smoothie for breakfast. He was expected to play well.

Never underestimate the power of low expectations.

I hit six shots to inside ten feet starting on the ninth and didnt touch the hole... I had 82 with waterball double on 16th trying to get cute with the one iron off the tee, bogeyed 17, parred 18... Shot 42-40... Had six birdie putts inside ten feet and came up dry.... Was hitting the tour blades tight, though... Parred 9-14 all on iron play... Should have birdied half of them, hit good putts, bad reads though...

hit it to 25 feet on 14, par 3, with eight iron from 145... parred it..

skied my three wood tee shot on 15 (par 4 about 410), had uphill 210 to hole, hit 1 iron, yanked it, couldn't get up and down.. bogey...

Dunked 1 iron off tee on 16 trying to be cute, hit it again-- perfectly-- hit eight iron to ten feet, another ten footer missed.. double...

hit 4 iron on 17, about 195 yd par 3, pulled it, had long chip, hit it to TEN FEET AND MISSED aargh so many ten footers... none of the dammned things went in..

pulled tee shot on the par five 18th left of the left side fairway bunker but hit mid iron out of 2" rough into fairway and had 90 yds left... got it to twenty feet... hit approach six feet past and made the comebacker, I think the only putt inside ten feet that I holed all day. :-)

so I was six over par after the eighth... held that until the 14th, then added four more on 15th-18th holes. a tale of three rounds. Sloppy early, sharp in middle, goofy at end. Took a few holes to hit some good shots with the Tour Blades but once I started, they got comfortable.. I still don't know the distances for sure but they seem comparable to the Adams I play... I ended up hitting at least a half a dozen iron shots to ten feet or less.. if only I'd brought my wife to putt for me. :-)

Next time my REAL sticks. The one iron cost me. Hit it great the SECOND time I tried it on 16, but lost two strokes with it there and another one on the 15th missing the green so far left. One iron kept me from 79. :-)

Well, this just goes to show that old irons are just as good as the new stuff. That's great that you had 6 iron shots to within 10 feet. In fact, that's amazing and very rare. 10 feet is nothing and is very close for an iron shot. Well done.

Bottom line for my game was that my short game forsook me. For some reason, I have not been chipping well the past two weeks. Today, I did not chip or putt well. I hit almost all the fairways with my Thriver and was in good shape. While I certainly did not hit every green with my irons, I was not far off the mark with my approach shots. I just had a terrible time of getting up and down today. I was a bogey maniac. I ended up with an 87 which is 5 strokes off my handicap.

Pressure didn't get me today as I felt loose, it was just my short game. Dave struggled the first 5 holes, but then he got in a groove and I was playing catch up every hole. I don't think I can beat Dave straight up. I have only golfed in the 70s 5 times my entire life, and while all those times were this year, it is certainly not the norm as much as I would like it to be. Dave pretty much golfed in the 70s today. He said he had an 82, but that was only because he was trying out different clubs and experimenting the last several holes after the match was already decided. He is a lower handicap player than I am, so in future matches we may need to make a small adjustment to try and even things out.

Still, I am not disappointed in the play today as I played better than last time and just got beat by a better golfer hitting his groove. I look forward to the next time probably next Spring.

If you're not chipping and putting well you have no chance in match play. Plus, you're playing against a guy that can easily shoot in the 70's and who has an excellent short game. It's really not a fair match unless he gives you probably 2 strokes a side. That's what handicaps are for. I hope you know we're just kidding with the songs and stuff. Crap, I've lost two matches myself.

Dad broke a hundred I think... he used to shoot in the 70s pretty regularly back in, well, the 70s... but now he is in HIS 70s and doesn't play much, hasn't been on a course since fathers day 2008 with me, in fact... he hit some nice drives, a few good iron shots, and putted with the old bullseye blade putter VERY well... had a good time, Sooner is great golf course company, never grumpy even when he has a right to be.. classy guy... Dad enjoyed it.

Not surprised you two couldn't putt well on those new Bermuda greens. They're tough to read subtle breaks until they've set in. They're even worse on a course that you know.

Hard luck Sooner. It's a bummer when you are close to the green with your drive and approach shots but your short game abandons you. You can't get up and down consistently and wind up on the bogie train. I hope you realize this result doesn't look good for GFF blades. Even though you lost you carved 10 shots off your score with the Eye 2's compared to the GFF Blades!

What I don't understand is how your short game sucked with a whole bag full of Cleveland Niblick chippers?

Plus they were freshly sanded. They have not had any activity at all for 7 weeks. They were raking sand and cutting holes just ahead of us today. We were the first ones to golf on the course in 7 weeks.

I think the theme song from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly should be playing as people line up to challenge Dave. Reminds me of the old west with everybody going after the fastest gun to prove themselves.

Should be anywhere from the 22nd to the 28th. Pick a day. Either that or I'll pick a day and you tell your wife you are busy!

I never should have figured out how to do this. I agree, it should be the background music playing whenever Dave's hitting a shot. I see no reason why he shouldn't give himself theme music

I took a few swings with Sooner's Eye 2 nine iron at the range yesterday.. I LIKED IT.

I should have hit more, but we were going to start...

I have a feeling the Eye 2 might be friendly to Big Dave one day... maybe even the same orange dot model he has.. I know it's flat, but I hit it well....

Blades are fun. I hit some really good iron shots at Hackerville. But reality will set in at some point... and when it does, I think Eye 2s might be a good set to fall back on.

The Eye 2 does not feel as clicky as I expected, and is STOOPID easy to hit well.

no wonder Lumpy won't give 'em up.

Judging by what's in his bag, either he can back it up or he's the most deluded golfer we've ever seen... :-)

    I suspect it's the first.

I have green dots, Dave, they are 2* upright (they go by the old PING scale and not the new PING scale that would put them at 2.25* upright).

I also extended my shafts an inch to meet by specifications.

I wondered about remembering the color but couldn't manage to second-guess myself strongly enough to edit the post. :-)

    if that makes any sense.

I didn't know the scale had changed.. that of course makes picking clubs harder.. :-) where would I find the old scale on the web?

My wife is visiting her family outta state, so I have a week to trash the house bachelor-style before I gotta clean it up.... I got out all my irons tonight, the old mid 1970s Staff E740 grind (right before "tour blade"), the FG51s, the FG17s, the Maltby MMB, the Golden Ram Tour Grind blades, the Adams Idea Pro Forged and the MP14s (the set I lifted that 1 iron from)...

yep, my mizzies are 1-PW, a rare set in this day and age..

The Adams Idea heads are MUCH bigger than any of the blades, a third of an inch longer than most of them... and they have much more offset than any of the blades... I wouldn't have thought there was this much difference, but it's there.

The Rams and the Mizzies are both overshafted for me, Rifle 6.5... I'm considering a couple of shafts.. any clubmaking experts got an opinion on the Nippon NS Pro 950? I want to try a lighter shaft on these... the Mizunos in particular are very heavy feeling even though the shafts are not overlong at all...

I also wonder about the DG SL, the superlite... it's under 100 grams like the Nippon...
