Pottsy will be happy to see his irons at the top of the list. I am happy to see my Adams paddles in second place. The other three choices are highly suspect.

I have the Bridgestone J36 and the Mizuno MP-60's.

I prefer the Bridgestones for feel and forgiveness. That may be partly the shaft as the Bridgestones have Project X and the Mizunos have TT Dynalite Gold. Still, the Bridgestones have moved the MP60s out of the bag for now.

Those were the Rac TP Forged irons that I bought and sold the other day and they were some of the worst feeling and performing irons I've ever tried. That list is a joke. The top five forged irons in my expert opinion are:

1. Mizuno MP-67
2. Wilson Staff FG-17
3. Mizuno MP-9
4. Mizuno GRAD
4. Taylormade RAC MB TP

I've found that MP 14's are the best looking and easiest to hit forged musclebacks I've ever tried. I wanted to try a forged cavity back so bought a set of Titleist 755's. I reshafted both sets with the same shafts--Dynalite Gold SL S300's, but soft-stepped the 755's one step because of their lower lofts. I've hit lots of other forged cavity backs and found the 755's the best performing. I'm a natural digger with irons and will take some decent turf with the MP 14's although without a sacrifice of distance or direction. The 755 sole is a bit wider and more rounded and is better for me at the moment. The interesting thing is that even though the 14's are forged from real soft carbon steel and the Tits are from hard stainless, they both feel the same. Proving, at least to me, that the shaft is more important than the heads.

You are quite right about the Taylors. They were without doubt one of the all time dud irons made by any OEM. They were apparently a club shorter than anything else out there, and had a sweet spot the size of a pea, which didn't feel that great anyway. No Tittys or GFF shows that the list is a biased joke. If it was fair dinkum the MP33 would be pretty high on the list.

Back in 1995 I played the MP-14 irons for about 6 months. I didn't like how much distance I lost and I felt like I could only hit them good on the range. I've never tried the 755 but I like the way they look. One of the best feeling Titleists I've ever tried is the 962b. Very small head with zero offset.

Well, with such a glowing endorsement from our resident Ping fanboy, I guess I'm gonna have to change irons now...

NOT.

IMO one of the finest players irons available - great feel, great workability, forgiving enough for what they are, excellent trajectory control. Almost zero offset. Incredibly thin top line. You have to really hit them bad to have them sting your hands.

I'm guessing that the only real reason these irons aren't more heralded is because of the initial price tag. Yeah, they cost a lot new. My set was $1200 when I got them - brand spanking new, in the plastic. Worth every penny IMO. If it weren't for the price, these irons would be all the rage among better players.

FD, have I told you how you're an idiot for passing up a set of these for $99? Just in case I forgot to do that somehow... you're an idiot. There, I feel better now.

This list is full of s.hit. The only one deserving of that top 5 would be the Nike Forged Blades.

My personal top 5 blade list
1. MP-67 - Absolutely perfect
2. 710MB - I like the look of these more than the 67's, but the 67's felt better
3. MP-32 - The winner until the 67's and 710MB's came out
4. Nike Forged Blade - The 05 version. Didn't care for the VR series
5. 690MB - Feels solid, great ballflight.. Just need to get em tweaked for me.

I agree with this. The original Nike blades deserve to be on a list like this.
They seem to ignore JDM (Japanese domestic market) offerings which is strange.
Irons like Epon, Tourstage, fourteen and then of course what about Miura???
Mizuno's reputation is well deserved also. That list is a joke.
Taylormade has produced top forged irons also.
Off the top of my head I would say:
My top five in no particular order.

Tourstage Z101
Epon AF301
Original Nike blades
Mizuno mp29
Miura Tournament blades.

Honorable mention to

Being a stupid scientist , I want to try and own a set of 5i-PW forged irons so that I could tell the difference between those and cast irons ... but I have not narrowed down to which one yet, but I want something as easy to hit as my Cally 2002 BB, most likely graphite shaft... so give me some advices... Most of players like Adams forged irons, some don't even want to play because of the name Adams... I don't have that ego, I want something that I could score 80+/- consistently .... hahahaha

Are you left or right handed? Do you hold your breath during a swing? How many degrees of loft does your putter have? Does your wife often go to another bedroom because of your snoring and farting?

There's no simple one size fits all advice I can give you. And depending upon your answers there might be more questions.

I don't believe that there is any value in going to the golf simulator at Golf Galaxy. I think people swing differently indoors and the simulator tends to favor a shot with higher launch angle, which doesn't always translate to better distance on the course. Even more important is the fact that you can't get a feel for a club indoors. You just can't.

Depends on the simulators as well. Golfsmith's Vector Pro simulators tend to give juiced readings the lower you hit it, especially with irons.

I went to a Golfsmith simulator and it was showing that I was hitting a 7 iron 120 yards and it was set for irons. I hit the same 7 iron at Golf Galaxy and was averaging around 155. What's funny is that it doesn't matter what 7 iron i hit at golf galaxy they all go approximately the same distance no matter how juiced up the lofts. I think the difference is in the length.

My local Golf Galaxy is probably just like all the others with big hitting area nest to the retail front of the store with the big screen behind the net and a big wall monitor to the side. This is called the "simulator" and its where you will find old men hitting new, taped up, $600 drivers with extra stiff shafts and younger guys swinging out of their shoes trying to bust 110 clubhead speed. It is OK for me hitting drivers to check clubhead speed and the trajectory readings seem to be OK. With driver, it seems to read about 20 yards short of carry and roll based on my real world experiences. Behind this hitting area are two smaller stalls with no screens but each has a laptop PC hooked up to a launch monitor. These seem to be much more accurate and provide a wide range of parameters and two graphic views of each shot. And they will record each shot ad infinitum (or at least 50 or so drives that I hit awhile ago). When the shop was not busy, I would go in with a new club or one I just reshafted or modified in some way and use those PC stalls and they were cool providing more realistic readings. And then the last time I was doing that, one of the guys came over and told me that the corporate headquarters had just spent $20,000 per store upgrading the software in the PC stations which are supposed to only be used for fittings--balls, clubs, shafts etc. for which the fittee is charged. I'll be damned if I'll spend $30 or whatever just to see if the 3/4" shaft extension I just did to a driver gives me a bit more ball speed or changes the launch angle, although it would be cool to me to know that.

Damn are you fortunate. For all that, I'd come with my own shag bag and go pick them up after I hit them. Come to think of it, its pretty useless to get the best data obtainable using crap range balls that you would never put in play.

The MP-67 irons have sure been playing sweet for me this week. I like playing with all my sets, but the MP-67s always remain in the bag the longest.

I only hit it on the range but it looks great and just launches the ball at a perfect angle for me with plenty of distance. People say it's all in the shaft but most of the clubs that are forged come with DG S300. I tried both the Wilson FG62 and Mizuno MP 67 right after and they played much differently. The Wilson was less forgiving and didn't feel as good with lower trajectory.
