The Official Golf Discussion Thread
Now I know everyone has been wound up a bit tightly lately, but this is the thread to just relax and talk about golf. No politics or oneupmanship (that isn't even a word, though it probably should have at least a space or a couple hyphens in there).
I've had a very good year on the course. I attribute most of that to getting a local consulting gig for the majority of the year. More play means better play for me.
The economy has definitely affected my club though. I've had my crew shrink by over 50% in the last 2 years. I used to get 2 tee times every Saturday and never have an issue getting my peeps to play. Lately, I have been playing much more with random people in our Saturday/Sunday game instead of with my good friends. I can admit that it's not nearly as fun. I could actually envision leaving the club, or joining another which is something I would never say 5 or 6 years ago.
The SPCC has a major construction program that will be fully realized in the spring of 2013. Supposedly open by January 1st is a huge indoor practice facility. The indoor green is 4500 square feet. There are 4 indoor hitting bays, and at least one of those is going to be into a screen with indoor golf software.
The outdoor portion around this new building is a huge short game practice facility. I don't see myself increasing the number of rounds played, but I'm going to try to hit up the short game facility when I have a couple hours to kill.
I guess this is just a stream of consciousness, but feel free to join the conversation.

Been a good year. Finally broke 80 so I was happy. They are doing a lot of tree trimming right now. We have 2 members on the board who hit big draws so you all can guess which side of the fairways are getting trimmed. Pissing a lot of people off who hit fades but ain't much can be done about it this year anymore.
Bridgestone J38 10.5, Srixon 2,3,4 hybrids. Snake Eyes Viper Tour
Eidolon 52,56 and 60 wedges.
Bettinardi sb-5+ putter.

I played more rounds this year than the combined total for the previous 15 years. All thanks to a club with official state association and USGA status but without real estate so we play a rota of about 20 regional public and privately owned public courses. I did it mainly for the competition and the convenience of having prime-time weekend tee times since I still work M-F. Its been a real hoot since the mix of men ranges from the young guys in their mid to upper 30's to a couple of geezers in their
70's. There's more than a handful of guys older than me with single digit caps. The best thing about it is that its totally on-line so you can sign up to play at the last minute if there's openings. Everyone puts $10 in the till and the winner and 2nd, 3rd get paid with the amounts depending on the size of that day's field which ranges from 16-32. Everything is played off net and I haven't found one of the 70+ members sandbagging.
Mostly Taylormade clubs now except for two Ping I25 hybrids, Mizuno 54 & Callaway 56 wedges.

I didn't manage to break 80 this season but am going to work my 65 year old butt off to do it next spring. I can hit a draw off the tee but it takes too much freaking effort and manipulation for me to do it so I've been learning to live with driver fades for the past couple of months. I will be concentrating on the short game for the next few months until the season begins. Going back over my rounds, especially those I played from August on, the number of strokes I p*ssed away within 100 yards from the holes was an abomination. What I have to get used to after not playing much for almost two decades is the speed of the freaking greens at almost every course we play. I don't know what they roll number-wise but I remember years ago that the only greens that fast were found on private courses set up especially for tournaments. Now its like every freaking muni greenskeeper has a mandate to get them rolling at 11.5 for the Saturday morning crowd and has to ensure that at least 12 pins are situated on tops of ridges or tucked six feet on the left or right sides behind deep-lipped bunkers with hard-packed sand. No wonder a round takes five hours. Damn.

This has been a good golfing year for me. I qualified for the SCGA Net Amateur, I won the club championship and I went undefeated in GR matches.
Lately I've been playing great golf and I had strung a series of mid 70's rounds together before going to the range, making a swing change, and in the process screwing up my swing.
Club ho'ing has been good and I've made some decent money in buying and selling. Nothing to get excited about.
My most recent ho' was a set of Callaway Diablo Forged irons, 4-PW, KBS Tour S shafts in great shape for $209.
My chipping and pitching have much improved this year.
I yearn for more competition and may join another men's club..maybe Torrey Pines.
-
I had a great year. I played at least 100 rounds so far. Still having trouble breaking 80, but it's better than breaking bones from mountain biking. I bought myself an Adams chipper as a fun club and have been loving this thing. All my friends want to try it. I still can't hit the long irons, so I'm stuck on hybrids.
Dad, I was swimming in a rainbow with millions of babies... and they was naked... and then all of a sudden I turned into a perfect smile!
-
I bought only 1 club this year. A 60 degree wedge replacement. After basically redoing my entire bag last year, it's good to have validated those purchases with a solid year. I know this was the most consistently I've ever played. I can honestly say that my personal benchmark for a good round went a few strokes. I always used to say any round under 80 is a success but this year 79 wouldn't count toward my cap.
I won a major at the SPCC, qualified for match play in the championship flight and competed well in gross events. High expectations for next year.

I broke 80 so that was huge for me.
I also suffered a Jay Bruce mid-season slump, so that sucked.
I was more streaky in 2012, either playing real well or sucking very bad (so I wasnt happy about that - its cool when I was stroking the ball, but totally unpleasant when I couldnt hit the broad side of a barn).
I would like to play SPCC in 2013 if it can be worked out HB.
Disappointed golf season for 2012 is basically over. March is a long way off. Hope between now and then mother nature cooperates and I can sneak a round or 2 in.....

It's the Super Pretentious Country Club, home course of HB.
Helmet, we'll do it for sure. Our schedules are polar opposites, but I am usually solid on Friday afternoons. Sometimes Friday late morning if I feel like slacking and don't have any critical admin.

Sounds good HB. Will get it done for sure. You need to play Walden again as well.

I like the track. Unfortunately, my most recent memories are long rounds on the weekends. Of course, that's my memory for every public course.
We can do a home and home. My parents have a house relatively close to there (747 and Hamilton Mason). Maybe I could play in the morning and meet up with the rest of the family in the afternoon.

I dont play Walden on the weekend, since as you say, its packed and slow.....If I do play weekends there, Im teeing off by 7am. But most of my rounds there are mid-week w/ the geriatrics.
747 and Ham-Mason is practically walking distance from me.
Home and home sounds good!

The last time I played Walden I paused after playing the lake hole and waved to Henry David Thoreau. He's one of the best minimalist golfers I've met.

I had a great year this year. Last year I finally broke 80 with a 77 towards the end of the year. This year it took me about half the season, but I had 4 rounds under 80, and a few rounds that were even par or better until very late in the round. Handicap spiked to over 12, but finished down at 9. Very pleased.
What changed? A much more controlled, relaxed swing, and more play. I think I got about 25 rounds in, which is a lot for me.

I went to the range a couple of times this year but haven't yet played a round. The economy's been tough on prior partners, travel's been demanding and until I hire someone it's counter productive to get away during weekdays for more than a couple of hours.
I've focused on other interests though and managed my share of fun. Once I've brought a slave on board I should be able to get back to regular golf. It's a great time to hire now, people will do anything. I think for a person in their 30-s to prove themselves in an industry new to them they should work 60+ hour weeks. That means by hiring just one person I get almost a person and a half. Maybe a hidden video camera is in order.
With things so bad out there, I'll be getting a huge discount on an MBA level employee. I really don't think they'll have the money to golf themselves which is good. The local MBA programs have been a great source for resumes and I can check their school records to see if they can grind out a huge amount of work. With only three of us in the office, I'll have to really make sure to avoid developing personal relationships else I'd fall prey to feeling empathy for them as to pay, hours, etc.

If you pattern your work relationships like Louie from Taxi you shouldn't have any problems with the peons.

I have to. To run a competitive business these days you have to be ruthless. My hires know up front what's expected, they're free to decline.
As a manager I have to constantly fight the tendency to be too nice. Nice doesn't get it done. I might as a result overcompensate by being kind of prickish but that's what it takes to be effective in business. I frequently have to remind myself nice guys finish last. Btw, by hiring after the first of the year I avoid holiday bonus silliness.

Yes, but you miss the opportunity to be a dick and make the new hire work late on New Years Eve.
Holiday bonuses don't still happen do they?

Maybe I should have them start 12/26. Bonuses for this type of position would be year end, not really holiday.
In seriousness, people I know in medium and large financial businesses out here are almost being worked to death.

Every once in awhile I drop by the Salvation Army store. Two reasons 1) I read a lot of books and on Mondays they have 8 books for $1. The other day I bought 6 Hardback "Dune" books in next to new condition and sold them on Ebay for $45. I'm reading the other two books. One is by the author of The Last Jihad. Big surprise, it has all kinds of accolades from right wing talk show hosts. Anyway, it's really stupid.
2) Sometimes they have cool stuff in there. Yesterday, they had a large tour golf bag with three sets of irons..Ben Hogan Apex II White Cameo irons, Titleist Tour Model blade irons and Wilson Staff blade irons with a pull cart for $25.
Finally, it keeps me centered. I'll turn in old books that I've read as well as clothing.
Anyway,
There are two kinds of people in the world, those who believe there are two kinds of people in the world and those who don’t.

Oneupmanship is indeed a word. Good writers used it quite a bit in the 70's and '80's. But since women now rule the world, "inappropriate" gets much more use.

LMAO!!
Man, have you sucked those guys in! I don't think anyone gets the joke.
But stop using it as a self-admiration society. Pass out those reps! You and Budda got more in 2 months than I got in over 15 years.
