From the fringe.
When I'm chipping from inside about 20 yards of the pin I only use either my 8-iron or my 52* wedge depending on the slope and how much roll/stop is required. (60* wedge if I need to flip one over a bunker and stop it quick or need a screaming thin one into the clubhouse clock).
Do you have a specific club or clubs that you prefer to use from the fringe or can this range from 3-wood to lob wedge depending on the situation?

I use my 61* LW for those types of shots. I control my wrist angle for different types of shots. I tried using different clubs before but I found that was most accurate with one club.

Very interesting thought - 3 wood to chip. I had thought on those lines but didn't ever try it. Might have got laughed at. But I don't like to chip, to me its sort of like putting but with an added unsurety of how much it will roll. I love to use the LB from anywhere close.
Believe it or not sometimes I like to be on the edge of tricky greens rather than on them as it gives me the chance to use my wedge and put the ball real close to the pin. I give the would be 3 putt a slip this way.

Didn't somebody beat Els not too long ago that was chipping with a Nickett utilty club?

I think that was Todd Hamilton at the Open, but it was a Sonartec 17* bent to 14. He was an awesome chipper with that thing.

I started using a 4 iron last year with a putting stroke.
I feel like I have more control by keeping the ball low, I have zero control using a wedge under similar circumstances.

That's right!
Corbo I think you should get a Sonartec 17* bet to 14*.

be careful, sonartecs are ribbed.
there are probably only a couple of golfers that should refer to themselves as the master. I am sure it is not anyone on this board.

I watched David Toms chip in for an eagle with his 3 wood off the fringe. From 20 yards out, though, you might want something with a little more carry. Generally, unless you are deliberately trying to slow the ball down by making it land on the fringe, you would want to carry the shot to the green before it lands and starts rolling.
Seldom right, never in doubt......

Sonartecs rule........................... Long live sonartec, I will post me hitting a high pearcing draw 220 yards down the middle to shut you alll up.
Long live sonartec.............
Long live sonartec..................
Feels just like it should.

I'd suggest that you and Czar continue this heated Sonartec controversy by Private Mail.....
