    40 yard pitch

I find it the most differing in golf, i play the super steep spinny play (yes, that is a correct description), my dad plays it with an 8 iron like a bump and run, and I see many others play flop shots, with no success at all. I love when I have this shot, I nearly always give myself less than 10 feet and, much more importantly, it gives me a chance to show off! So, what's your method, and how effective is it?

I would probably say I am O.K. with this shot, I may get up and down from there 50% of the time tops, if I had to guess. I will primarily bump and run with my 4i Hybrid if it is nice fairway to the green. Otherwise, if that is not the case and the pin is in the back, I will use a 56* SW, if it is in the front I will use a 60* LW.

It all depends on how the ball is sitting lie wise.

this is a broad question but for most shots like this i would use a 56° and hit it with some spin, i would try to controll the shot's hight and spin in order it get it close.

but sometimes i would use something like an 8i and play a low running shot, i find this less effective for me though.

Green is slightly raised, wind is into off the right at 5 mph, the break on the green is from the back left with a spine running parallel to it 5 yards onto the green, the pin is at the back right potion, 30 yards on. Your answer had better be good now ;)

In order to give you my answer you'll need to tell me what would be the humidity, barometric pressure, and the color of the shirt I would be wearing. All are extremely critical in club selection

Otherwise, my answer is to take a pitching wedge and swing easy resulting in a bladed shot 20 yards on the other side of the green but resting nicely in the tee box of the next hole.

I'd use a 54* wedge and try to drop it somewhere within ten feet.

If I'm really hitting my wedges well that day, the 58* is coming out and we're gonna be brave (dumb) and try a semi flop shot.

I just swing my hi-bore full out, it knows exactly how hard to hit the ball so I can have a tap in.

It'll go round the world and hit the flagstick, cleaving it in two before dropping in.

I had a similar shot the other day, except I was in the long stuff, I could barely see the pin, and I only had about 5 ft of green infront of the pin. I used my sandwedge and hit the longest flopshot of my life, and land it pinhigh to the left and make par. I will always remember that shot, because it was the only thing that SW every gave to me before I broke it.

The Hi-Bore is the solution to golf. Its the only club anyone will ever need.

56, half swing, three quarters hinge, inside 10 feet. I love that shot!

It has made my game worse. I cant chip with it, can't hit approach shots with it. It is a worthless piece of crap, and feels even worse. My new Burrows Powersphere wedges are 10x better. And it was an accident breaking it, I hit the ground and the shaft bent.

56* 1/2 swing. Usually works pretty well for me.
If in the rough I'll use a PW and do a standard pitch shot.

Nice tight lie, it's time to show off. Ball back, 54* wedge slightly closed down, bring it back to a quarter past 9, skip stop time. I felt really good last round when a decent older guy I was playing with asks me "What are you using for those shots?" I told him either my 50* or 54*. He said "You're deadly with those things" That's about the first time I've heard a compliment like that, that wasn't over one of my drives. Which btw are not all that impressive this year. I think I'm getting weaker or wiser, probably a little of both.

I just take my 58* wedge, open my stance and hit down on the ball. The rest is done by feel. The ball hits bounces and stops, or comes down and relaxes near the hole. For me this shot is purely feel..
"You got a choice. You can stop, or you can start."
    "Start?
    "Walkin"
    "Where?"
"Right back to where you always been... and then stand there... Still... real still... And remember... "

I'd use a 53 degree wedge and hit a soft pinch shot to about 10-15 feet short of the pin, and let it check up close to the hole (best case scenario),
OR, I could always go to the "old dependable" chunk or bladed shots........
    Seldom right, never in doubt......

Definitively a feel shot that's why I'll often play my 52° gap...or Pw if in the rough.

For anyone who has problems with these short range wedge shots I would like to offer my insight. Believe me, nobody knows better than me how pathetic it feels to chunk a potential birdie wedge approach only 10ft. The things that changed my wedge game from my worst asset to my greatest are pretty simple. First, practice. I have a 5 gallon bucket with a dozen or so balls in it. I set it up and try to land one in. I switched to a slightly open stance and keep my feet only a few inches apart. This promotes the weight forward, chunks cured. Lastly is to hinge and hold through impact. Nothing feels better than taking a sharp 3/4 wedge swing that thwacks and feels like you thinned it. You know that sucker has so much backspin it's going to stop dead.

I especially love the ones that go real low when you strike 'em well and you can actually see the ball hopping back on the 3rd bounce

I had one low one like that (really closed it down) at my home course off a bare lie when they had aerated the greens. I literally saw 2 pieces of turf fly up and the ball jumped like 3ft. straight up. It was cool as hell and tore a nice chunk out of the green. I'm still like a kid with a new toy after learning to hit these wedge shots. I probably try them a lot more than is really necessary. I just have this vision of being able to land it and make it spin back into the hole. Probaly never happen as I still can't really get them to actually come back like the pro's do yet. I've gotten a few inches but not like 3-4 feet.

It's amazing. One time on TV I saw VJ get about 30 feet of spin from 60 yards, never seen anything like it.......
