I know it's a little corny, but play one shot at a time, and don't worry about your opponents, just play your own game.

The odds are that your life won't turn out much different whether you kick a$$ or get yours kicked, so just take it a shot a time, enjoy yourself and don't worry about the results.

It's gonna suck big time. If experience is any measure of how your day will go then you will implode and shoot your worst score in a year or more. Shots that should be automatic will shank into imposible lies, you'll have to consult the rule book at least twice as your ball will be "double hit", end up lodged in a tree, tucked into a beer can or on a bald guys head.

On the bright side, you'll have stories about your 1st tournament for the rest of your life. Oh, bring lots of golf balls.... you'll need them!

If you do play bad, remember to cry like Morgan Pressel.

I used to get nervous before a tournament too. Here is my remedy. For the first 2 holes, I play it safe and just try to hit fairways, whether that's a 3 wood, a hybrid or 5 iron it doesn't matter, then with a second shot, I aim for the front of the green (especially if I don't know the course), If I'm on ok so I have a long putt, if I miss, at least I'll get to see all the green and should have a relatively easy chip/putt.
    Hope this helps.

Just shake your opponents hand, wish him luck, and think toyourself "I am going to bury you." Either that or hack at him with a sand wedge in the trees.......

don't try any heroic shots...play safe, hit back into the fairway.
hit 3 wood on most holes, including par-5 holes. you can still get there in regulation without risking a crazy-wild driver shot.
eat a well balanced meal before the tournament, stretch out, and warm up by hitting a few (only a few) range balls to get loose. practice a few putts to get the feel of the greens.
    have fun...

Just don't try to do anything you don't consistantly do in practice. Too many people take stupid shots they know they have the capacity to do, but can't do consistantly when it really counts. Case in point, on my local course theres a large lake separating hole 18 from the tee box... With a perfect, high drive you can make it on the green in one... on a par 4. I used to do it all the time when I had a 3 wood. I have probably done it like 2x since i lost my 3 wood (on loan) with my driver. I just don't get the height I need outta my driver to make it... Even if it lands it'd probably bounce right off the green. Damn near every time my friends play in practice they play safe and go around. 1 extra stroke and unless you really fudge it, you're on in 2. Every time I play a match that counts for anythign with them though, they go for it.. and they take the drop.. and they're hitting off the tee for 3. So unless you know you're down by 1 and you NEED that shot to win.. play your own game that you know you can handle. If someone else can do that shot, let them, thats their game. Don't play someone elses game or you'll lose every time. If you can't do what someone else can, you know what you need to work on to make it part of your own game.

If it's matchplay then take your favourite long club off the first, conditions permitting. Try and hit into the greens first so that you can apply the pressure. It's amazing what it can do to your opponents
