It's b*gger all about strength until you want to hit it past 300 yards, flexibility is the key.

you have to have the right combination of strength and flexibility
for my age, i can lift a lot of weight... but i can drive 280 because im flexible, not because im strong
so when you are working out, be sure to stretch the muscle you're about to do, then immidiatly after every excersize, stretch the muscle(s) that you just used
this will ensure that you have strength, but you don't loose any flexibility

It's not about muscles. I can bench 300lbs but only hit my 6i about 140 on a good day.

It's all about technique. I recently changed up my swing a tad and incorporated a little more body movement. Kind of like a small sway. I imagine letting my hips and a$$ turn back and then thru like when swinging a baseball bat. Anyway, i have noticed a HUGE increase in distances. I was hitting my 6i about 155-160. Now I am having major control issues.

So anyway, it ain't about muscles. Just sound technique.

    Flexibility comes hand in hand

As long as you do gentle stretching the following exercises will help both strength and flexibility. 1) In a stance of the same width as your driving stance, Deep front squats:- barbell (comfortable weight) across chest not behind neck (this encourages you to use the hip flexors) and keep your feet planted firm as this will really open up your hips and lower back for flexibility through that area. 2) Kick overs, lay down in a crucifix position on the floor and keeping asa flat to the floor as possible kick your left foot over to the right hand and the other side. Also do plank and the glute bridge every other day and your lower body will just be rooted to the ground for your new flexi torso!!!
To be honest i am a personal trainer with quite a lot of upper body mass and would say it hinders me more than helps (except in rough), these flexibilty and core stability exercises are what give you clubhead speed.
