Anybody else work on a golf course?

I'm 17 and I've spent the summer working at Oak Springs Golf Course in St. Anne IL as a cartboy/janitor. I was just wonderin if any of you guys are or did work on a course and if so did you have any stories about your experiences?

Worked at a private course called The Hamlet in Delray Beach, Florida in the summer of '74. Started by pulling weeds then moved on to repairing sprinkler systems, mowing greens and building greens. The head pro was the infamous Peter Kostis of CBS and the touring pros who represented the course were Sandra Palmer and Laura Baugh. A great experience all around except for Peter Kostis. Great teacher, lousy person. *sigh* Can't have it all eh? :-)

Many moons ago I used to go to Charlevoix Michigan with my mother for 2 week stints in the summer. All my cousin's played golf and Norman and his buddy Terry caddyed at the Belvedere, I would go and work a few days a week just to hang out with my cousins and pass the vacation.

Later when I was an undergrad I had this dream of going in to Business school and obtaining a degree in Golf course managment (now they REALLY have that concentration). I also wanted to work in the wine industry. Neither came to pass, but I did have summer jobs at a couple of local course around Raleigh NC. The pay was low, the work was everywhere... from shagging and washing range balls, to working counters, the starter shack etc... I learned alot. I also learned that the wages for just about everyone concerned was low... the manager and the Pro made out... but the Pro put in long days... often until 10pm, but they generally love their work... they're golfers and they are working the course and the cliental. Good experience, good summer job... things have probably changed. Now when I go off I see the crews around the courses and they're either young teens who work harder at avoiding the tasks than doing the actual work, or old timers who love the work, but (God bless 'em) are pretty slow sometimes. All minimum wage slaves who have absolutely no benefits.

Hope that helps... sorry about the lack of glam.

Wow... tonight I stopped into this fairly new Golf Galaxie in Newport News... I just heard about it... I was shooting the breeze with the manager while I was looking for a pre-owned lob wedge (I did see a Calloway that was reshafted and nice), but anyway... she offered me a part time job. I told her I would consider it and get back to her. My schedule is pretty packed but it might be an "in" for some future employment. With my background I could probably be managing something like that in a few years. Hmmmm (I said scratching my chin).
