3 iron or hybrid?
I hate hybrids. Here is another example of why long irons are better than hybrids.

But wouldn't a hybrid have broken the window just as easily?
Although the glass would have launched on a higher trajectory, perhaps cutting the guy's face :-)
-
Perhaps, it depends on the index of the person swinging the hybrid underwater at the window.
Me? I'd have gone sand wedge. Heaviest club in the bag.
Game improvement means very little when trying to save lives.

hybrid in the basement
I can't say I hate hybrids, but I did try one. A Heavenwood 2H... it is now in the basement with the rest the stuff I don't use. I went back to the 2-iron and am happy. For me, the hybrid was easier to make contact but harder to control (kind of like a game improvement iron). I spent more than one range session trying to compare my Ping i5 2-iron with the Heavenwood 2H. The iron won hands down on going where I wanted it.
-
Whoa, Heavenwood is on the bottom of my top Hybrids list. I got nothing but low slices out of mine, don't give up, try a different model.

Hybrids Suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IMO hybrids are for lazy golfers who do not want to learn/have the time to learn to swing the golf club properly. If you have developed proper technique (preferably by working with a PGA Pro) then hitting a 3 iron should be no more difficult than hitting a wedge.
Just my 2 cents,
Noley.

If he'd tried to use my "Heavy Putter", the rescuer might have drowned......
Does this mean that a 3 iron now has to be called a "rescue club"?
(After reading some of the posts above, it is obvious that a few people didn't read the story linked in Besson's original post on this thread........)

No, I can't agree... I demo every club before I a pay the "out of control" prices they ask for these things now. Every club I buy I compare against at least 4-5 other leading models. In the hybrid case, the Heavenwood had an edge on distance and going straight. But like I said, not as staight or long as my 2-iron. Hey. it's just me... no 2 swings are the same. I have always been a "iron" player... I would never dream of using a 5 or 7 wood yet several good players I know rock with them. Same with hybrids... go with what works for you. 2-iron works for me.

Did anybody bother to read the original post and the link before they started to post?!

Besson,
I think you have to read between and lines and interpret what is not siad. The omitted section could have read that he started to reach for the hybrid but then changed his mind at the last second and grabbed the 3i knowing he wouldn't need it if it were lost.
Even Furyk is using a hybrid. #2 on the money board but he does have that loop in his swing. He should probably get some lessons and learn to swing properly so he to can hit a 3i.

There's an argument for and against hybrids with that story. If he took a hybrid instead of 3 iron the sole would have bounced off the window instead of breaking it. However, the man 'cut' his hand during his escape, a common shot with long irons.
