Which 14 would you choose and why?

I own the following 18 golf clubs.

Of course I can only play with 14. Which 14 would you choose to play with and why?

    Driver 10.5*
    3 wood 15*
    5 wood 19*
    Hybrid 19*
    Hybrid 22*
    Hybrid 25*
    3 iron - Pitching wedge (8 irons 21* - 45*)
    Gap Wedge 51*
    Sand Wedge 56*
    Lob Wedge 60*
    Putter

Well I'd use the driver and 3 metal for sure. Then I'd keep the 3 wedges and putter...pw thru 5 and fill in the distance gaps with the two hybrids. All of that depends on the course and weather conditions. In exceedingly higher wind conditions I'd drop one hybrid in favor of the 3 iron. A club I hit with a lower trajectory as I find the higher lofted metals/hybrids I hit too high. I would also favor dropping the highest lofted wedge if there wasn't much trouble around the greens.

That's a pretty strong pitching wedge. If it was me, I'd go with...
    Driver
    3 wood
    19* Hybrid
    3 - PW
    51* wedge
    56* wedge
    Putter

Driver and putter are obvious choices.
I like the 3 wood as a solid option off the tee. The 19* hybrid is a pretty versatile club for me, from off the tee, fairway, or rough.
I like to have a full complement of irons, because I like to adjust trajectory, and I just can't get predictable results with hybrids. They all go sky high, which is typically a good thing.
I'd skip to LW, because you have such a strong PW.
Of course, this is not meant to be advice as to what you should play.

Pick a hybrid and pick one wood, whichever fills the yardage gaps or you hit better.
    4-PW
    Gap, Sand, Lob,
    Putter

I'd rather much have a 3 iron than a hybrid. Hybrids may be easier to hit for a higher handicap, but you can't control the trajectory and shape the shot as well as with a 3 iron. Go buy a cavity back offset 3 iron if you play blades. Still better than a hybrid. (sorry I just don't like those weird looking clubs) Also, most hybrids come with a graphite shaft which would cause the shots to balloon on me. I'd much rather have 3 wedges as well. You'll hit a gap wedge much more than a hybrid, unless you play from the senior tees and need it to tee off on all the short par 4s.
Be glad we aren't getting all of the government we're paying for.

ALL of my irons are cavity back but I still can't hit a 3 iron!

    Thanks

Personally, I'd ditch the 60 degree wedge, make a choice between the 19 hybrid and the 5 wood based on what was working best lately and whether it is going to be a calm or windy day, then probably dump the 3 and 4 irons and play the 22 and 25 hybrids instead. Most people play their hybrids better than 3 and 4 irons. If you're an exception to this, play the 3 and/or 4 irons. Otherwise, play the hybrids and score better.
Another reasonable option would be to leave out the 22 hybrid or the 3 iron, and play the 60 degree wedge instead. It depends on what works for you, obviously, and where your distance gaps give you problems.
    Seldom right, never in doubt......

Go to the driving range, hit all 18 clubs and ditch the 4 you don't hit well.

    What I normally carry

On my home course which is quite short:

    Driver
    3 wood 15*
    3 hybrid 22*
    4 Hybrid 25*
    5 - PW
    GW 51*
    SW 56*
    LW 60*
    Putter

On Longer courses where there are more par 5's or long par 4's that may require a fairway wood or hybrid for my second shot:

    Driver
    3 wood 15*
    5 wood or 19* hybrid
    3/4 hybrid 22* (replaces 3 & 4 iron)
    5 - PW
    GW 51*
    SW 56*
    LW 60*
    Putter

Well my answer was slightly tongue in cheek as I assume yours was.

    No offence meant.

If I went out with a driver a 3 wood and 3-PW I would be ok on most holes but would struggle on long par 4's or par 5's if my appraoch shots were less than a 3 wood but more than a 4/5 iron. i.e. if I had to hit a long 3 iron shot.

I might hit it ok but most likely to chunk it and come up a mile short or slice it outta bounds.

The closest I could get to your 'real set' would be:

    Driver
    3 wood
    3 hybrid 22*
    4-PW
    GW
    SW
    LW
    Putter

I would be ok with this setup.

It's always such a personal preference thing. Some like hybrids A LOT while others prefer fairway metals. The setup I like is driver, 3w,19&22 hybrids, 5iron-GW, SW, LW & putter. I think the 3 wood gives you another more forgiving driver (tee) option and the hybrids are more versatile "trouble clubs". The gap and lob wedge are stroke savers. That's my 2 cents!

I don't see why anyone wouldn't use a 60* wedge. It's a must for flops over traps or no green to work with. Or dare I say deep face bunker shots!

Most of us position our second shots in wedge range in the fairways and stay away from the nasty bunkers and flop shots ;-)

Why don't you consider hybrids real clubs?

Did you know that after Gene Sarazen perfected the sand wedge it wasn't considered a "real" club either. So I would guess that like those stick in the muds before you, you don't understand that a club is a club is a club and that some youngsters uncontrolled thought process is pretty much without valid proof...just troublesome prattle.

I vary between a 57 degree with heel relief and a low bounce 58. I can always open up the face for more loft for high, soft shots. There's nothing magic about 60 degrees. An open faced mid-50 degree wedge has a lot more loft than 60 degrees.

... that one one said that they could not say anything unless they knew more. I say that tongue and cheek, of course.

    Here is what I have:

    1. Driver (10 degress)
    2. 3-Wood
    3. 3-Iron Hybrid
    4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. 4-Pitching wedge irons
    11. Special Pitching Wedge (52 degrees)
    12. Sand Wedge (56 degrees)
    13. Putter

I 3-Iron that I plan to replace with a hybrid as well, since I really like my Callaway 3-Hybrid Iron and will most likely get the 4-Hybrid Iron equivilent. I am also considering a 60 degree lob wedge. I have a very good short game, so these are important.

In any case, hit what you are comfortable with and be confident in what you hit. As I tell myself with every shot (and I heard it from a wise or two players), "Play within your game!"

All the best and most importantly, play because you love to play!

I have no problem shaping my shots with my hybrid. The only people who actually benefit from the better workability of the 3 iron are Tour pros, and it's not even all of them, seeing as how many have made the change to a hybrid, and have had more success because of it. A lot of pros pull them out when they play courses that require long approach shots, combined with slick greens, because they want something to launch high and land soft. There are certain shots that cannot be played with a long iron, that can be played with a hybrid. That's simply a fact.

Mark Wilson plays a hybrid, and just won the Honda Classic. So does Boo Weekley, who ended up getting T-3 in sudden death.

Nobody who posts on this forum is "too good" for a hybrid. Don't kid yourself.

You're wrong. Omen2 and myself are way "too good" for a hybrid.
