    pre-putt routine

I have a somewhat different approach when doing my pre-putt routine. My routine is done above the ball (back and forward stroke to help me align the putter face with the target) instead of doing it beside or behind the ball. My question: is it allowed? As some of my friends informed me that I would get a penalty on each stroke above the ball I made.

as far as i know as long as you had no intension of hitting the ball and you dont hit it on your practice swing it is perfectly legal...

Pingman is correct, you have to intend to strike it for it to count as a stroke. I don't think it's a good routine though as you're arms must either be compressed ot your stance is compromised... I suggest for everyones sanity (except maybe your own) that you adopt a more conventional pre-shot routine.

    Do you sole your putter?

I think you are correct pingman, as long as you do not attempt to strike the ball you may be ok. But if you have soled your putter once you have addressed the ball -even if the wind moves it- you will be accessed a stroke so you might want to be very careful with that routine.. I'll have to get out my Rules of Golf and see if I can find the proper interpretation..
