    First name:Spencer

    Height: 6'2''

    Weight: 168

    Location:St. Louis, MO

Years Playing: Two and a half

    Righty or Lefty?: Righty

Home Course: Wherever I can walk for less than $20 is where I make my home.

What's in the Bag?: Cleveland 460 Comp, Cobra SZ 3+, TaylorMade 16*, 19* Rescue Mids, TaylorMade RAC OS 5-PW, SW, Dunlop 60* LW, Nickent Pipe PP002

Handicap: 16.9 (Not official...roughly guestimated by averaging the lowest 10 scores of my last 20 rounds, subtracting 72 from that, and then multiplying that by .96)

    Handicap Goal for 2006: 13

Strengths: Keeping the ball in play, playing shots that eliminate high score possibilities

Weaknesses: Long woods, Pin seeking from 100 yards in, 30+ foot lag putts, holing 5-9' putts, consistency

Your Typical Pre-Round Routine: Rolling and tossing balls stiff wristed on the practice green to get a feel for speed. Chip a few times with the LW and PW. Lag putts, then 4 footers.

Your Golf Attire (usually): Collar and Cargoes.

    Club Distances for solid shots: Driver 225, 3+ ~ 215, 16* 195-205, 19* 180-195, 5I 160-170, 6I 150-160, 7I 140-150, 8I 130-140, 9I 115-125, PW 100-110, SW 70-80, LW 40-50

Your Usual Ballflight: Depends on the day but usually R to L. Misses are usually pushes or hooks with irons and hybrids, with slices more likely from the long woods.

Have You Played Competitively? Where? When?: Just for $ with my immediate and extended family.

Pick The Ball Cleanly, or Divot?: Also depends on the day, and the lie, but more often I pick than divot. I think it's a product of practicing in the yard...dad doesn't like huge chunks taken out of the yard. It's his thing.

    Blades or Cavity Backs?: CBs

Links or Tree Lined?: Nicest course I ever played was links, but usually play trees.

Range Rat or Gain Experience By Playing? I think you learn fundamentals at the range, but you learn to score on the course. So both.

What Time of Day Do You Prefer Playing? Whatever part of the day keeps the temp below 82*

Do You Get First Tee Jitters? Only in front of strangers.

Your Overused Golf Sayings: None, I don't golf enough for my sayings to be overused.

Quiet Player or Loud?: Quiet with everyone but my dad and brother. I'll converse with strangers, but I'd rather just enjoy the day.

Walk or Golf Cart?: Walk, definitely.

Favorite Golf Quotes: "When I'm on a golf course and it starts to rain and lightning, I hold up my one iron, 'caus I know even God can't hit a one iron." -Lee Trevino; "There are three ways of learning golf: by study, which is the most wearisome; by imitation, which is the most fallacious; and by experience, which is the most bitter." -Robert Browning

    Righty or Lefty?: Righty

    Home Course: Hartwell

    What's in the Bag?: Cleveland: Launcher Ti460 10.5*, Launcher Steel 19*, Halo Hybrid 25*, CG4 3-PW Steel Shafted, CG11 Black Pearl 54* + 60* ... Never Compromise: Milled Series #4 35"

Handicap: i shoot upwards of 100

Handicap Goal for 2006: to break 100

    Strengths: Chipping

    Weaknesses: Golf Swing

    Your Typical Pre-Round Routine:
I arrive just before my start time, hit 4 or 5 warm up shots shots at the range, maybe lag a few on the practice green, and wait for the starter to call my name...

Your Golf Attire (usually): Slacks, Dark Polo, Cleveland hat (to keep my long hair out of my face while playing, and the nike golf shoes i stole from my friend Brian (they cut my feet, i really need to buy some new ones)

    Club Distances:
    Driver: if i hit it cleanly, 260 - 280
    5-wood: 215
    4H: 190
3i: i try not to use this one
    4i: 180
    5i: 170
    6i: 160
    7i: 150
    8i: 140
    9i: 130
    PW: 120
    54*: 110
60*: i try to stick to using this one inside of 60

Your Usual Ballflight: if i hit it right it tends to go straight, maybe a very slight fade on occasion... if i duff it, well, sometimes the grass goes further than the ball

Have You Played Competitively? Where? When?: High School, Tournaments, I have some experience.

Pick The Ball Cleanly, or Divot?: Cleanly when well struck

Blades or Cavity Backs?: Cavity Backs

Links or Tree Lined?: Tree lined, i love trying to get creative... i've recently acquired a nice punch shot

Range Rat or Gain Experience By Playing?: Practice by playing, i feel that going to the range is a waste of time, i hit a million lovely shots at the range, but that doesn't translate to the course, the only thing that does, is playing on a course

What Time of Day Do You Prefer Playing?: Depends on the course, if i play the Norwalk 2-Fer, i've got to get there before 2, if i play at Hartwell, i usually play later

Do You Get First Tee Jitters?: Only if i play at a course i'm unfamiliar with

    Your Overused Golf Sayings:
    "Be the right club."

Quiet Player or Loud?: I am an extremely animated golfer

Walk or Golf Cart?: Depends on the course, and who i'm playing with

    Height: 5'11

    Weight: 175lbs

    Location: Houston/Katy, TX

Years Playing: >20 years; seriously, 9 months

    Righty or Lefty: Righty

    Home Course: Willowfork Country Club

What's in Bag: Variety of drivers, inexpensive metal-shafted 3-wood, 21* Nike CPR, Ping Zing 2 irons, Titliest SW, Bobby Grace V-Foil putter

    Handicap: 14

    Goal for 2006: 10

Strengths: General driving, fairway woods & utility club, competitiveness, short game around the green. I shoot a lot of pars for my handicap (~8-9 per 18 holes)!

Weaknesses: Consistancy - especially with mid & short irons (but rapidly improving). Also, kill good rounds with 2-3 blow-up holes usually resulting from an OB drive or par-3 water dunks.

Pre-round Routine: Stretch, hit 20 balls, chip & putt

    Golf Attire: Who cares?

    Club Distances: averages: D- 250, 3w- 225, 3i (hyrid)- 200, 4i- 185, 5i- 170, 6i- 155, 7i- 145, 8i- 130, 9i- 115, Pw- 100, Sw(56)- 65

Usual Ballflight: High, fairly straight - but fight a hook off the tee. My natural driver swing would be a big hook, so have to compensate - and occassionally overcompensate.

Played Competitively: Golf team at age 13. Now just club tournaments.

Pick Ball Clean or Divot: Both, unfortunately.

Blades or Cavity Backs: Cavity backs

    Links or Tree-lined: Enjoy both.

Range Rat or Gain Experience by Playing: 70% playing, 30% range

Time I Prefer to Play: Any and all times

First Tee Jitters: Yes, first hole. Often play better following 1 beer (not 2) but usually wait too long for the cart girl.

Overused Golf Sayings: Keep your head still! Don't sway. What lousy advice.

Quiet or Loud: Quiet on the course

Walk or Cart: Walk after work, cart on weekends

Favorite Golf Quotes: Lightning nearby? Grab your 2-iron & run like hell. Even God can't hit a 2-iron! (originally a 1-iron, but no one carries one anymore).

    Equipment Info

    Hey guys,

Has anyone ever hit the Nakashima NP-1 Driver? I am thinking of trading in my Cobra X-Speed (iRod stiff shaft) to the NAK 460 (stiff Grafalloy Blue). I have heard + read alot of great reviews, but I would also like some info from my fellow GR buddies.

I have also switched my KZG wedges for the Bridgestone J33s (52* + 56* + 60*). Love the wedges - great feel and spin.

    Thanks and God Bless,

    TK

    Profilin'

    First name: Jorge

    Height: 6’5”

    Weight:250

    Location:Virginia

    Years Playing:40 or so

    Righty or Lefty?: RH

Home Course: The Pines in Yorktown, or The R & A (Rugged and Affordable) Gloucester CC at Gloucester Virginia (for a quick 9).

What's in the Bag?: 845s, Bertha/2004 and Tight Lie’s 3,5+ and 7+. The irons are stiff steel shafts, the Woods are regular graphite; I may go to stiff someday on the woods, but they’re working out just fine the off the shelf. I use corded grips, currently Golf pride New Decades (I think that’s what they are). I re-grip every 2 years. I use a wet rough white towel on the grips just about every shot. After working a couple of PGA and 1 LPGA driving range gigs (volunteering for rounds), I noticed that the wet towel is the favored method employed by the pro-caddy’s; it works.

    Handicap: 10 going on 12

    Handicap Goal for 2006: <12

    Strengths: Fairway percentages, Fairway woods

    Weaknesses: Chipping

Your Typical Pre-Round Routine: Shower, shave, sunscreen on the arms, face, ears, and neck. (I had a buddy lose a nose to cancer… golf related, he scared everybody into a sunscreen regimen and floppy hats) Bug juice on the legs. Small bucket, putting. A little stretch, hydrate and set up the card (name, putts, fairways) and I’m off.

Your Golf Attire (usually): Polo/Khaki. Comfortable shoes (usually Sketchers). After my FootJoys wore out and everyone shifted from spikes, I figured any comfortable walking shoe would work… and they do! I have to be a bit careful on inclines if the grass is dewy. Hat must cover the ears.

Club Distances: Irons in increments of 10 to 15 yards. Woods: Drives too consistent, but I have driven at 295 (it might have even been 300). That crush was during a local tourney, and it was my best drive ever. Fairway woods 150ish and less.

Your Usual Ball flight: Straight on target (my aim is another matter altogether).

Have You Played Competitively? Yes Where? High School and College (Louisburg NC and Averett U in Danville When?: Late 60’s early to mid 70’s. I had a full bag (Leather) of Kro-Flites (blades) 1-9 and a sandy. 4 Persimmon’s. The lofts were different back then, wedges were scarce commodities, the 9 did most of the short work with a SW for the bunkers. At least that’s how I remember it.

Pick The Ball Cleanly, or Divot?: Depends on the surface. I tend hit fat/divot on Fescues and Bluegrass, however Bermuda keeps the ball above ground a bit and I usually just shave the grass a little. If you’re playing Bermuda chances are the ground is hardpan. Taking a divot out of hardpan will practically dislocate your elbows. Taking divots usually slow the club speed and offset the head, my goal is as clean as possible dependant, of course, on the lie.

Blades or Cavity Backs?: Blades in my youth and CB’s now.

Links or Tree Lined?: Both, depended on whether I turn left out of my driveway or right.

Range Rat or Gain Experience By Playing? I used to live at the range, now I mostly play and warm up at the range. I’m really in it for the walk.

What Time of Day Do You Prefer Playing? Dawn Patrol, but during the summer I like the afternoon after the crowds thin out.

Do You Get First Tee Jitters? Only when there is money involved.

Your Overused Golf Sayings: Muttering “crap” after shooting into a difficult lie. Or “nicely done” when someone has a terrific shot.

    Quiet Player or Loud?: Quiet

Walk or Golf Cart?: Walk… tournaments require carts; I play about 4 or 5 a year.

Favorite Golf Quotes: Lee Trevino once said in jest “How long has this been going on?” after getting a paycheck after his first win. Or, after one of my regular foursome foozles a shot… “At least you’re dressing better” or “That’s a hard shot with the dew point this low” something like that. It’s always fun to rip-off something Gary McCord has used.

    First name: George

Alias: Jorge Babarosa (I have forgotten how or when I acquired that moniker, but it was probably during my beard (which is red) and longhair era.

    Height: 6’5”

    Weight: A strapping 250

    Location: Virginia

Years Playing: 40 or so, I started when I was 10 or 11. Thank you Uncle’s Emil, Johnny, and Ray, along with Cousin Norman, Ron and Rodney. Your golf mentorship has allowed my to suffer greatly over the years. Also three cheers to Mom and Dad for buying me all those range passes.

    Righty or Lefty?: RH

Home Course: The Pines in Yorktown, or The R & A (Rugged and Affordable) Gloucester CC at Gloucester Virginia (for a quick 9). Tournaments are in a variety of Tidewater courses some very exclusive and immaculately maintained. The tournaments receive bargain rates for Monday golf. Good thing because I golf on a budget.

What's in the Bag?: Tommy Armour 845s, Big Bertha/2004 Titanium at 390cc and AdamsTight Lie’s 3, 5+ and 7+. The irons are stiff steel TruTemper shaft; the Woods are regular graphite; I may go to stiff someday on the woods, but they’re working out just fine the off the shelf. I use corded grips, currently Golf pride New Decades (I think that’s what they are). I re-grip every couple of years. I use a wet rough white towel on the grips just about every shot. After working a couple of PGA and 1 LPGA driving range gigs (volunteering in exchange for free rounds), I noticed that the wet towel routine is the favored method employed by pro-caddy’s; it works.

    Handicap: 10 going on 12

    Handicap Goal for 2006: <12

    Strengths: Fairway percentages, Fairway woods

    Weaknesses: Chipping

Your Typical Pre-Round Routine: Shower, shave, sunscreen on the arms, face, ears, and neck. (I had a buddy lose a nose to cancer… golf related, he scared everybody into a sunscreen regimen and floppy hats) Bug juice on the legs. Small bucket, putt around the practice green to just to test the local grass and cut. A little stretch, hydrate, and set up the card (name, putts, fairways) and I’m off. I usually team up if I’m flying solo.

Your Golf Attire (usually): Polo/Khaki shorts or pants according to the venue’s rules. Comfortable shoes (usually Sketchers). After my FootJoys wore out and everyone shifted from spikes, I figured any comfortable walking shoe would work… and they do! I have to be a bit careful on inclines if the grass is dewy. Hat must cover the ears. At the R&A Gloucester CC, it’s tee-shirts, but no cut-offs. I’ve golfed barefoot, and really liked it. I’ve always wanted to golf nude, but…. I’m in the AARP zone, most would not appreciate the visual.

Club Distances: I am a lousy judge of distance, but from my range experience I calculate that my Irons are in increments of 15to 20 yards. Woods: My Drives are consistent around 225 with a smashing 250 every few holes. I have driven at 295 (it might have even been 300). That crush was during a local tourney, and it was my best drive ever. Fairway woods 175ish and less depending on the club (I’m guessing here too).

Your Usual Ball flight: Straight on target (my aim is another matter altogether, hence the target will vary). I have drawn V’s on my balls which when properly and painstakingly aligned with the V on the Bertha makes for an accurate shot. The Tight lies have no such alignment aid, and I really have to set up carefully or it will go straight – where I mistakenly aimed it. Oh the complexities of a target game! At one point I had a bit of a low ball fade, after changing out drivers from the a 9-degree Pre-War bird Big Bertha to the 2004 at 10 degrees and buying longer tee’s, I’m cured. The 9-degree Pre-War bird actually had a 1degree closed face (much to my mortification), which coupled with a bit of inverse wrist action manifested itself into the hook. A quick trip to a pro in combination with feeding the Pre-owned Callaway coffers for the 2004 titanium Bertha cured the problem. Now… I’m thoroughly smacking ‘em.

Have You Played Competitively? Yes Where? High School and College (Louisburg NC and Averett U Danville When?: Late 60’s early to mid 70’s. I had a full bag of Kro-Flites (blades) 1 thru 9 irons and a sandy. 4 Persimmon’s (1, 3, 4, 5), I got into a 7 wood later. The lofts were different back then, wedges were scarce commodities, the 9 did most of the short work with a SW for the bunkers. At least that’s how I remember it.

Pick The Ball Cleanly, or Divot?: Depends on the surface. I tend to take a small/thin divot on Fescues and Bluegrass, however thick carpet of Bermuda keeps the ball above ground a bit and I usually just shave the grass a little. If you’re playing Bermuda chances are the ground is hardpan. Taking a divot out of hardpan will practically dislocate your elbows. Taking divots usually slow the club speed and offset the head, my goal is as clean as possible dependant, of course, on the lie. I used to live on Guam, which as a soil content of red iron oxide dirt and small coral bits and pieces. I purchased a set of mid-80’s Golden Bears (blades) to play while living there; the coral tore those clubs to pieces. Imagine what the soles of your clubs would look like after four years of playing on a gravel driveway; they were chewed and only suitable for the rank beginner. I gave them to a neighbor kid who was taking up the game; he played them for a couple of years and passed them on to his younger brother. I guess you could safely say that I learned to NOT take a divot from that foray on the “rock”…as the ground on Guam was not only rife with coral but was also as hard as concrete.

Blades or Cavity Backs?: Blades in my youth and Cavity Backs now. In my younger days when I played a lot, I was better. Life carries on; my rounds are down to two per month, sometimes less. I promise to get out more, but there are chores to do and bills to pay. Oh well. In retrospect, I wish Cavity Backs were around when I took up the game. I like the oversized sweet spots.

Links or Tree Lined?: Both, dependent on whether I turn left out of my driveway or right.

Range Rat or Gain Experience By Playing? I used to live very close to a cheap country range, now I mostly play and warm up at course range (the R & A GCC doesn’t offer the amenity). I’m really in it for the walk.

What Time of Day Do You Prefer Playing? Dawn Patrol, but during the summer I like the afternoon after the crowds thin out. Twilight is okay, but you have to ride and I like walking.

Do You Get First Tee Jitters? Only when there is money involved. I find the 2nd tee is often my nemesis shot.

Your Overused Golf Sayings: Muttering “crap” after shooting into a difficult lie. Or “nicely done” when someone has a terrific shot. The cry of “worm burner” is also heard occasionally.

    Quiet Player or Loud?: Quiet

Walk or Golf Cart?: Walk with a pull cart. Tournaments require rides; I play about 4 or 5 a year.

Favorite Golf Quotes: Lee Trevino once said in jest “How long has this been going on?” upon getting a paycheck after his first win. Or, after one of my regular foursome foozles a shot… “At least you’re dressing better” or “That’s a hard shot with the dew point this low” something like that. It’s always fun to rip-off something Gary McCord has used.

Handicap Goal for 2006: to break 90 consistently
    Strengths: 3-wood
Weaknesses: barely off the green chips/pitches
Your Typical Pre-Round Routine: during the season, I go to the putting green and do some putting/chipping cause there is not time to go to the driving range and you have to buy balls to hit. For casual play(at my CC) I will go to the driving range for a bit, then the putting green.

Range Rat or Gain Experience By Playing? Both.
What Time of Day Do You Prefer Playing? Whenever I can get a tee time, usually have to play at around 4 if it is a weekday
Do You Get First Tee Jitters? Used to, not anymore. Though during past seasons the first hole has been consistently my worst hole every time, because I have to hit without having gone to the range any to warm up, so the first drive can be quite disasterous some times.
Your Overused Golf Sayings: Joking with a kid I golf with, "Foot wedge!" or "Oh thats a gimme" when the ball is really far from the hole(a kid I used to play with would say that seriously, on putts that he couldnt make).
Quiet Player or Loud?: Depends on who I am playing with, if it is casual or during the season practice, loud, and during a match, it depends on if our opponents are nice or not.
Walk or Golf Cart?: Cart for recrestion, walk during season

    Handicap: 9.3 and dropping slowly
    Handicap Goal for 2008: 8
Strengths: short game and course management. I do my homework prior to playing a course.
Weaknesses: Length off the tee. Judging dramatic changes in elevation. Cute cart girls.
Your Typical Pre-Round Routine: Arrive at course an hour before. 30 minutes on the range to loosen up and see what's working, hitting 9i - 7i - 5i - 4H - Driver - 4i - 6i - 8i - wedges, finishing with whatever will be my shot off the first tee. 10 minutes on chipping and getting up and down. 10 minutes on putting, mostly short putts from 4-10 feet.
My Golf Attire (usually): Baseball style golf cap with ball marker clip, polo shirt, cargo shorts, ankle socks, and Softjoys. Never anything bulky. If I need to keep warm, I layer on things without long sleeves.
Club Distances: If I swing from my heels, the ball often goes 10-20 yards farther, but I'm not likely to find eight out of ten anywhere near the fairway.
Driver: 235-250, usually 8-10 fairways per round.
5-wood: 200, but I only use it when I hit a short drive on par 5s.

    4i: 150-160

    7i: 120-130; a hard 7 can go 135
    8i: 110-120; a hard 8 can go 125
    9i: 100-110; a hard 9 can go 115
PW: 90-100; a hard PW can go 105, but may spin back.
    52: 50-80
    56: 50 max
I chip with my sand wedge and 9-iron only.
I hit bunker shots with the 56º 52º PW and 9-irons, depending on the lie and distance.
Your Usual Ballflight: Draw, but occasionally the ball wants to go straight.
Have You Played Competitively? Officially, no. But always play competitively because I am a competitive person.
Pick The Ball Cleanly, or Divot?: Divot, but not large pancakes! Usually barely enough to retrieve and replace. More noticeable with shorter irons, 8-iron and shorter.
Blades or Cavity Backs?: Blades, but I started on cavity backs. Don't like the way they look now at set-up.
Links or Tree Lined?: I'd rather negotiate trees than bunkers, although most bunkers that are waist-deep or shallower are not a problem.
Range Rat or Gain Experience By Playing? Definitely a Range Rat because it's cheaper, but I can bring my range game to the course.
What Time of Day Do You Prefer Playing? 8:00 when the dew has evaporated and the greens are still soft and relatively undamaged by careless play.
Do You Get First Tee Jitters? It depends on whether I warmed up. Some courses don't have ranges.
Your Overused Golf Sayings: "Turn! Turn! Turn!" on long breaking putts. "That was supposed to draw!" on tee shots.
Quiet Player or Loud?: Quiet, except when my ball needs my immediate guidance.
Walk or Golf Cart?: Walk on executive courses, ride especially on hilly courses.
Favorite Golf Quotes: "Never up, never in." "You can talk to a hook, but a slice won't listen." "If you play golf, then you're my friend."

    GR Profile

    First name: Sam
    Height: 5’ 8”
    Weight: 140
    Location: NE USA
    Years Playing: 20
    Righty or Lefty?: Right
Home Course: Private, tree lined, hilly, narrow.
What's in the Bag?: Cobra LD Speed woods, Wilson Pi5 Irons, Taylormade TP wedges, Yes! Valerie putter
    Handicap: 8.4
Handicap Goal for 2008: single digits. Made it! Was a 10.5 at the beginning of the year.
Strengths: hmm. I usually out drive everyone in my group. A couple of examples: I’ve driven the green a few times on a downhill 300yd par 4 and on a pretty good uphill 255yd par 4. I also hit my wedges to very precise distances.
Weaknesses: Don’t make enough short putts. Driver can be erratic.
Your Typical Pre-Round Routine: stretch then swing my driver really hard. Rarely have time for the driving range…
Your Golf Attire (usually): shorts & a polo shirt.
    Club Distances:
    driver: 260 yds
    3 wood: 240
    25* hybrid: 200

    54* Sand: 100
    58* Lob: 85
Your Usual Ballflight: med height, slight draw (when I’m on), high push (when I miss).
Have You Played Competitively? Where? When?: never
Pick The Ball Cleanly, or Divot?: clean. When I miss I tend to hit it thin.
Blades or Cavity Backs?: cavity back. The Wilson Pi5s are small head, thin top line, little offset with a cavity, so I can generally work them.
Links or Tree Lined?: I prefer wide fairways where I can bomb it.
Range Rat or Gain Experience By Playing? If I didn’t have kids I’d spend a lot of time on the range. Now, very rarely.
What Time of Day Do You Prefer Playing? Any time the course isn’t crowded. I hate slow play.
Do You Get First Tee Jitters? For tournaments, yes.
Your Overused Golf Sayings: “Is that good? Do I have to putt that?”
    Quiet Player or Loud?: quiet
Walk or Golf Cart?: almost always walk.
    GPS or Laser: laser.

Lol, Teach me how to hit my 3w and 2Hy and we'll be good ;)

I can hit my driver, I can hit my 4i, I just cant hit those 2 clubs for crap which is why I don't know if I want to add another wood, iron or wedge. I'll wait till next summer when I'm sure I completly replace all of my clubs I guess
