GI clubs on a 1 handi?

I was reading a post when I looked at a signature. I was surprised to see someone who claims to be a 1 handicap with this set up (see below):

MY BAG: Cleveland Hi-bore XLS Draw 10.5* 60g Fit on Gold Stiff; Cleveland Hi-bore XLS 15* 55g Fit on Gold Reg.; Cleveland Launcher Ti 19* Stiff; Cleveland Launcher Ti 25* Stiff; Cleveland Halo 25* Stiff; Cleveland Halo 31* Stiff; Cleveland CG4 7i-PW s300; Customized Cleveland CG10 2-dot 50*,54*,58* Wedges; Customized Odyssey DFX 2-ball 34" Putter; Titleist ProV1x Balls
    Handi-1

Maybe I'm wrong but a 1 handi should be able to hit a 6,5,4 irons and not need hybrids for those clubs and not need a draw driver?

I have played with guys in their 50's who are single digits and still play 5 irons.

imo its all preference i am sure he can hit those clubs but prefers the flight he gets with hybrids...

Correct again Pman. It's always prudent to set your bag up to the course you are playing. In my case the majority of my rounds are on my home course which was built in the 1920's. We have hundreds of massive oak trees. Anyone that has ever played in Florida on older courses with massive oak trees knows that grass will not grow under them. Hence many errant shots will be played from dirt lies. Sometimes dry dirt that is very soft and this time of year often wet dirt otherwise known as mud. Donald Ross design with very small turtle back greens and lots of bunkers. I witness scratch golfers come in to our tourneys and get ripped up by this course. If I were playing on newer courses without mature trees and larger greens or links style courses I'd set my bag up accordingly. As I only average 270 with the driver at sealevel and 140 with an 8 iron the hybrids and fairway metals cover my yardage spreads while still allowing me to carry the 4 wedges(scoring clubs). As for the draw driver, this course favors a draw which I can hit straight anytime I please.

He is an exception, not the rule. This is not about Hybrids its about playing super game improvements clubs as a 1 handi.
I have never seen any scratch play those clubs, as for Stricks point about dirt lies under trees, as a scratch do you hit that many wayward shots that require super GI clubs and if you can hit your Draw driver staright when ever you need, as a scratch cant you hit a draw once in a while when you need it.

    Hell, I'm a 7 and I can hit a draw once in a while.

Good point. Especially about the driver. I am a 30, and I dont need a draw driver. Of course, if I kept score like most people I see out there, I would be a 10.

I never would have pointed this out if he had not put the 1 handi.
There is no freaking way a real 1 handi would play these clubs.

I am not bashing the clubs at all, Cleveland makes great equipment, Stricks bag is that of a 20 plus handi. Which is also ok if you are a 20, we all start somewhere. This reminds me of the guy who claims to hit 350 yd drives on every hole with an 11* senior flex persimmon driver from the 1960's, ego over inflation.

Come on down to Central Florida Belly and put your money where your mouth is. Since you don't believe I'm a 1, we'll play straight up for a hundred a hole.

I thought that the idea was to find equipment that benefits the person. Taking advantage of technology and setting up your equipment to best suit yourself is not deserving of ridicule. A lot of good information is passed on these forums, but it seems that a few are hung up on the idea that a single digit should have the same bag set up as a touring professional. This is not the case for amateurs who work for a living. Just my opinion.

Central Florida I hear? What course are you referring to? I'm well known for sloppy play all across the area.

I hope you're not talking about Ocala or Polk County or something that doesn't qualify as Central Fla.

Bartow in the heart of Polk County. Some of the best greens around the area at the present. A half million people certainly qualifies.

You created this flame as usual, so that obligates you not me. Sooner or later you'll show up down here, all you east coast yanks do eventually. But I'm sure you'll sneak in and out without taking the challenge.

did you say Bartow Golf Course? I went to their website and looked at the scorecard there is not even 1 dogleg hole! You claim to need your draw driver for the doglegs, you are so full of it. Just admit that you are not a 1 handi, and al of the pain goes away.

I have no intention of "sneaking in and out" of Polk county Fla as East Coast Yanks do??
That is a truley stupid statement.

Lying yank. Anyone with eyes can see the doglegs. Coward and a liar, no big surprise there. I have no problem with yanks in general, they retire here. I never heard of anyone retiring to a filthy place like Maryland. The only cowardly yank is you. The rest don't have to sneak in and out. Wasn't "Homicide; Life on the streets" based on Baltimore.

The scorecard on the Bartow Golf Course shows all of the holes as straight. Maybe I missed one dogleg.

You have no integrity and your vile response is amusing. You hate yanks? Why is that? I dont know why you would hate me for where I live, I am actually from Raliegh NC born and raised so I am from the south.
I moved to Maryland to attend graduate school and wound up staying here a while.

I stated clearly that I don't have a problem with Yanks. But you being the lying coward that you are like to start flaming threads. It doesn't really matter where your from or where you live you lying coward. And my home course has the names of: Bob Murphy, Andy Bean, and Lee Janzen on the Sherriff's Youth Villa Classic trophy. No true southern gentleman such as myself would ever travel to such a desolate place as Polk County Fla. FLA rednecks are the most looked down upon class of redneck there is. You all are the spitting image of Larry the Cable Guy.

Southern gentlemen or gentlemen in general don't start flaming threads. The only posts you make on this forum are of this nature you lying coward. And you will always be refered to as the lying coward that you are. The challenge was made and you cowardly declined. You have and always will hide behind your keyboard. Are you 90 years old? The "yellow" comment is straight out of the 1950's. What did I lie about? I didnt lie about anything I pointed out that your clubs are not those of a traditional scratch golfer and it really is not feasable to think that I can get on a plane and fly to central florida to settle a internet golfing challenge, that sir does not make me a coward.

You are clearly out of touch with reality. Would I lose in match play to a 1 handi, most likely. But I know and so does everyone else that you Strick are not a 1 handi.
If for what ever reason on God's green earth I am in Bartow Fla i will let you know so that we can play a friendly round of golf, same goes if you ever travel to Maryland.

I agree. Why would Strick want to lie about his handicap anyway? He has been questioned by many of us (myself included) and he has given well explained logical reasons for his unusual setup.

If he really wanted to lie just to impress posters on this board he might as well say that he has Titleist 695 MB 2-PW in the bag.

Then they'd be drooling all over his sweet blades and have no problem with him claiming to be a 1 handicap.

Don't worry Strick. I believe you are a 1 handicap. But I won't be coming to Florida to prove it. It's too far and you'd whip my butt!

agree with belly. Obviously most here have never been to Maryland. Not many would consider Maryland dirt, baltimore sure, but not the state as a whole...

Belly you have handled this like a pro. i concur that there aren't any 1 handi's who cant hit a 6i as well as a hybrid version there of. in fact a real 1 would probably prefer the iron to the gaybrid as the gaybrid would get up in the wind to much and be hard to control in less than pristine weather conditions.

I SMELL B.S. as does BELLY.... yellow flag....

i may consider coming down to central florida.. i just need to get a few vaccinations first and grow out my super sweet rat tail.... I believe thanks to boo weekly i can get a camo'ed cleveland golf hat.

The following was taken from an article on the PGA TOUR Partners magazine,
"PGA TOUR players are even getting into the mix. According to the Darrell Survey, 54 of the 156 players in the 2007 PGA Championship played with at least one hybrid club, with several using mixed sets of hybrids and irons.

At The PGA TOUR’s Fry’s Electronics Open in Scottsdale last fall, 42 players reportedly started their iron sets at 4-iron and six at 5-iron. Chris Riley started his at 6-iron and used four hybrids. That number likely will grow in 2008, which is no surprise to seasoned equipment designers like Hoeflich."

54 golfers, all scratch, all professionals, playing hybrids in the final major of the year. What is gay about that?

Nothing at all but this argument has been done to death on here and presenting the facts and figures to support your case makes no difference to the moronic 'hybrids are gay' brigade. They will just point out that those professionals haven't achieved much and are a bunch of bums and refer back to the only golfer who matters in their view. Who just happens to have a serious knee injury right now but plays blades and doesn't use a hybrid.

But he does use that sissy old mans club a 5 wood.
I chose the road less traveled.

I have obviously missed most of the discussion. My join date says 2006 but I just got out of the Navy in Feb and spent a majority of my time on a submarine so I did not have a lot of internet access at times. I am just trying to get a justifiable reason for jumping on a guy for carrying the clubs that help him play his best game and an explanation as to why hybrids are "gay" other than "because I say so".

Strick, is this a registered handicap? Got a letter or a handicap card? A nice photo of it should set this to rest, along with the telephone number of the club so if any of these douches calls, the assistant pro and the greenskeepers will confirm your handicap and make the appropriate physical threats and comments about their mothers.

    Hi Guys,

There are no pictures on a scorecard. It's all about numbers and chosing the right clubs for the right course and conditions. Example some times if you are playing raised greens then a 5 wood rather than a 2 iron is best the same goes for high flying quick stopping hybrids. Golf is a game to be enjoyed, but is also a thinking man's game. Technology is there and is never going away, so enjoy it.

    Thanks

I don't see any doglegs on the course either...sometimes cards are a bit off, but still strange.

Setup isn't that strange as I've seen similar from below 5 hdcps before. As a scratch golfer with ball striking ability I stick with a pretty traditional setup. Although, one pro who routinely shoots even par or better in pro ams now has 2 hybrids and he hits one of them about 260 off the tee. He uses them like fairway metals and I'm not completely against carrying "grandpa" fairway metals...right now I jump from 3 wood to 3 iron and that's a big gap. 3 wood goes about 265-275 or so and the 3 iron goes about 225-230. I've thought about putting a hybrid or 7 wood or something in between...haven't yet though...normally I try to hit a club that doesn't put me out 240 or 250 on a par 5...when it happens I always wish I had another option though.

I think from the back tees number 4 could just barely qualify as a dogleg. And number 10 is a definite dogleg if those trees on the corner are above head height.

As for Bartow County, hey Strick, Bartow sounds like a real purrty ol part of the world down there Boy. Do all the greenskeepers look like Carl Spackler? Sounds a bit like Wanker County from Married with Children. I bet you know some good banjo players at your course.

I see your original post in this thread has been edited. Did you do that? Man, I laughed so hard at that one, I actually pissed in someone else's pants.

It got deleted once, then edited when I reposted. I'm getting the distinct impression Strick holds some pull with the mods here. Or the mods have taken it upon themselves to 'edit' posts they feel are inappropriate without any thought for the poster who suddenly has a post that is cast in a completely different context than intended. This has been a touchy subject in the past (see Teesee) and I sincerely hope that the mods have not again decided to appoint themselves as the fun police.

    So much for free speech.

It's been slow at work lately, so I've looked at a lot of the old threads.(Teesee included) It seems that overmoderating causes more controversy than flaming. Check out the Lloyd Xmas vs. Benguk threads, funny stuff. What was so wrong about the Teesee thread that merited lockingt/banning? I think that most people here have a good sense of humor and take a few zings. Anyhow, I looked at some of the threads at shottalk last week and I tell ya, that place is a cure for insomnia. I hope this forum never ends up like that.

You have no integrity and your vile response is amusing. You hate yanks? Why is that? I dont know why you would hate me for where I live, I am actually from Raliegh NC born and raised so I am from the south.
I moved to Maryland to attend graduate school and wound up staying here a while.

You clearly have issues that need to be worked out, see a therapist or go have a drink.

I can't believe you are questioning this guys integrity. What the hell??Have you seen the clubs Rory Sabbatini plays?Adams Idea A3 irons. Are you going to question his ability? You come on here and basically call this guy a liar,a guy you don't even know and he needs a therapist.Pull your head out of your butt,I hope you go to Central Florida so he can take your money

Rory who????? I'm sorry, I've been watching the leaderboard of this year's majors and I'm not familiar with that name. Isn't he that bum whose mouth writes cheques that his clubs can't cash? He hasn't exactly been setting the course on fire lately and his form has dropped dramatically since last year when he could play a bit. How long has he been using Adams clubs again?

I think if you wanna put forward the argument that pro's play better with SGI POS shovels of the type used by our friend 'six toed' Strick, perhaps you should find a better example.

Come on Belly - you started this argument now finish it!

If you're so confident you can whip Strick @ $100 per hole $1,800 should more than cover the cost of the plane ticket shouldn't it?

Even if you only win by 5 holes $500 should be enough to recoup your costs?
I chose the road less traveled.

Now where the f#ck am I?

Do you really believe that a particular handicap should be using a particular type of club? Come on. No one is that dense.

I found a website that has satelite aerials of the area including the golf course. When zoomed in all the way, it clearly shows the detailed layout of the course. You'd need to print a scorecard as a hole guide. And yes the scorecard was quite generic, about what you'd expect from an old muni.

1st hole has a lake on the right that encroaches on the fairway about 240 off the tees.
2nd hole is a very tight dogleg left. Draw required.
    3rd hole par 3.
4th hole is a fairly tight dogleg left. Draw required.
5th hole is a fairly open slight dogleg right.
6th hole is a slight dogleg left with a huge oak tree encroaching on fairway's left side about 230 from tee. O.B. along right side. Draw favorable.
    7th hole par 3.
8th hole straight with O.B. closely along entire right side.
9th hole fairly straight with O.B. along entire right side.
10th hole is a driveable hard dogleg left par 4 for the longknockers (I can't reach it), O.B. close down entire right side.
11th hole is straight but narrow with O.B. close along entire right side.
12th hole is straight with tee nestled up against the left side tree line. O.B. close along right side. Draw favorable.
    13th hole par 3.
14th hole is straight with lake in front 270 from tee and pond on right 250 from tee.
    15th hole par 3.
16th hole is straight with O.B. close along entire right side. Lake in front 240 from tee.
17th hole is straight with huge oak tree encroaching left side of fairway. O.B. close along entire right side. Draw favorable.
18th hole straight with O.B. close along entire right side.

Not one hole on this course requires a fade drive. And if you hit more than a slight fade with the driver, you'll be punished severely.

Well last year I seem to remember him using Nike Ignites which look more shovelish then the Adams clubs.

Obviously looks can be decieving because he could actually play golf with those Nike's. Since he picked up is Adams contract and started using SGI POS high handicapper shovels he has started to play like the type of golfer those clubs are targetting.
