    Question What Ball to Play?

Hello everyone. I'm new to this website because I just discovered it recently. I really like the information shared here.

I have been playing for about 4 years now. I am an 18 handicap and have a swing speed of about 98mph with the driver. I have tried numerous types of balls with mixed results. What I have found is that I tend to prefer the "tour" level balls because of the feel around the greens. Of course like anyone I want more distance but I can't bring myself to play the "distance" type balls because they feel like chipping and putting a rock. I know that the ProV1 is king but I would like to get some opinions from the forum on some other balls you may have tried with success. Thanks for your opinions.

my game and handicap (18.5) sound similar to yours. i also enjoy the tour level balls, and currently play the Maxfli A10 until my stock is gone. then i'll either play the Maxfli Revolution Tour, Ben Hogan Hawk or Precept U-Tri tour. depending on how much you're wanting to spend there are several good choices:
    $45-50/doz Titleist ProV1
$40/doz Ben Hogan Apex Tour (great ball, lot's of spin)
$30/doz Maxfli Rev. Tour, Ben Hogan Hawk, Precept U-Tri tour
    $20/doz Titleist DTSoLo, Noodle Spin/Rotini
    hope this helps...

    Welcome to Golf Review!!!

Of course Pro V1 is King... at 5$ each, King price Tag!!! Probably the greatest feel and distance !!! But for that price, can't permit myself. So tried many economical balls. For the price, i prefer, by far, The XL 3000 Top Flite Super Spin (Green box). The feel is great; really gives you more spin. The distance is GOOD for a soft ball. I really like the feel around the greens; i just love the sound on the putter (Very important for me!!!). Another good ball is the Maxfli Noodle. Longer than the Super Spin, but not as much feel; but still one of my favorites!!!

Don't buy the Top Flite TOUR; really fragile ball (But feel is good; very soft). You will be changing each 9 holes!!! Besides that, can't think of anything else. My friends say the Titleist NXT is great to.

So good luck in your next purchase!!!

    Best balls

I've used about 6 dozen new balls this year and rotated them quite a bit. The Precept U-Tri Tour is probably my favorite, but less-expensive balls that also play very well (offering a good combination of distance, feel, and durability) are the Srixon AD-333 ($19), the Callaway CB1 Red (on sale now for $15), the Pinnacle Exception, and the Maxfli Noodle. All of those balls are under $20 a dozen, and if I played any one of them exclusively, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt my scores at all. -- JC

    My friend,

Throw those nasty Pro V's in the garbage and get on board with Callaways. ;) I've been playing the HX red three peice for the majority of the year, but recently switched to the HX Blue (softer, more spin) as I find that i can drive it just as far as the Red (distance) balls. They have unmatched feel and control.

The HX Tour really is the best ball out there, in my opinion, but for the money, you can't go wrong with either the HX Blue or the HX Red. Both have awesome distance off the tee and feel amazing around the greens.

Just my thoughts tho. Buying a ball is pretty personal, so your best bet is to buy a few sleeves and try some out. That's basically what i did until i ran into the HX series and threw away all my other balls.

    It's really that good.

Ah, the tour soft strata is a great ball, for me at least, very soft 3 piece with a great feel made by top flite, but dont let that scrae you away. give it a whack

    spin balls

Good thinking. The best way to reduces your handicap is to reduce the number of shots on and around the green. I personally use Strata Tour Ultimate but sadly they are no longer made but along with what has already been suggested I would suggest trying out strata Tour premier. If want to compromise spin against distance I suggest Topflite Infinity High Spin. Nxt Tour. Nike power distance feel.

II really can mishit anything just as efficiently, but prefer ProV, SoLo, or Strata Tour Ace - depends on the greens. I also very rarely buy new balls, because after you hit them once they're used anyway. A good source for used balls is http://www.golfballsdot.com/ He doesn't always have every brand, but has great prices. His Grade 2 balls are very good, and Grade 1 are mint. I've paid (before shipping) as little as $7 a dozen for ProV1's (Grade 2) and $3 for Pinnacle Gold. He's in Dallas & that's local for me, so I don't know what shipping will be to either coast.
Hold my Beer. I'm going to hit a high fade over that tree....

Gotta agree Divot, the A10 is an absolute pearl of a golf ball. I bought ahem. 9 dozen in a closeout from Britain. I've only 5 dozen left - gave 2 dozen away and lost 24 balls this year !! - sorta regretting the lavishness of my donation now - without a doubt it's the best ball I've played

I have a liking for the Precept U-Tri Tour and the Srixon Hi-Brid Tour as premium balls. Get yerself a sleeve of Top Flite Infinity Ideal Spin from the bargain basement

I saw the Strata Professional Distance, clearance at WalMart for <$13.00. Picked up a dozen because they are 3 piece. I like them and will probably get more.

Howya Bd, I can't believe the price of golf equip stateside. I usually have a shufty at golfsmiths and tgw.com. The shipping prices are reasonable, if ya can work out the optimum amount of gear to buy. Like say you buy 3 dozen golfballs shipping is $43, but then add another 3 dozen or a club of some description and you qualify for discounted ground shipping. I'm sorely tempted, but I have to do some homework regarding sales taxes when they merchandise hits this side of the ocean. Maybe you can stuff a suitcase full when ya come on yer holliers ;)

Be glad to. Just remember, I have to get by the Golf Czar's cavity search, so you may need to have some Neopsporin, Preperation-H and a sport's psychologist waiting on me Emerald-side.

Check on shipping costs, person-to-person, and I could buy up a bit and mail to ya instead. Be better on me ol' arse dat way.

LOL ........ so who has assumed the mantle of golf czar btw ?? .......... by my reckoning we have a Ball Czar , Golf Czar and a Sarcasm Czar, it's time for me to get me thinking cap on b4 all the good czar(ships) are gone.

Don't bother with any of those medical remedies for the body search - natural medicine is the way to go - a good bowl of bran provides the necessary roughage to loosen any sphincter - just outta interest are ya talking about concealing a sleeve or a box in yer tunnel ?

That tunnel is yet unexplored, so we're dealing with uncertainties. I guess it would also depend on length of flight.

Who was that Ball Czar, anyway? I remember crowing him in one of our threads due to a comment some thing like:

"The Pro V1. End of discussion. Argument over."

I got on his case a bit about his talent of picking equipment for people he has never seen hit a ball, etc... infinium...

I feel as though a Czarship for you may be a conflict of interest, as you hold very prestigious Irish diplomatic position here, along with IG. You wouldn't want to give up the diplomatic immunity would you?

LOL... yeah I remember that guy. If memory serves he was a newbie and didn't even give himself a settling in period b4 da ridicule began.

I gotta think a bit more b4 forsaking the diplomatic immunity gig, guess it'll boil down to which looks better on me business card or which title will impress da ladeeeez . yep shallow is the word yer lookin for ;)

    Rock was dead on.

the ProV1 is slowing and after playing the HX Tour for a good 6 months now, i know that for me at least, the ProV1 is over.

though sometimes i miss the side stamp along the seam, but that goes away when i rip my short irons back AND blast it way past guys that used to have a few yards on me. try it youll notice a difference, it rolls like the low spin ball that will remain nameless, but just seems to hang in the air forever. nice soft feel too.
Golf is a game of luck, the more you play the luckier you get.
