ProV1. Gay or Nay?

It seems there are differing opinions on the real manliness of the regular ProV1 ball. In true GR tradition, the only way to settle the matter is by poll.

I have used 4 responses so there is a varying degree of gayness for those who are undecided.

I think he plays the X. He just refers to them as ProV1 because he doesn't think anyone on GR would be gay enough to use a regular so didn't think he needed to differentiate. On GR if you say 'ProV' it goes without saying you are referring to the X.

Dredging up a review from 2005 has no relevance to this poll, or the content of this poll (although I applaud your tenacity to go to those lengths to discrdit me). That Not a Hacker guy from then doesn't sound anything like me. I think you should stick to the present. I don't think any of us would want to be judged by what we wrote (or bagged) in the past,

My years of ho'ing irons is now over. I have finally found a player's cavity that fits my game. I scored a full set of these on ebay (3-LW) in black dot which fits me. These irons offer plenty of forgiveness for a decent player. They have the best feel I've ever felt for cast irons. They are laser beams when you are swinging well, and offer forgiveness when you aren't. Can't ask for more than that. In fact my whole bag is PING now and I'm playing my best golf ever. The i/3's are as good as any new irons offered by PING. I love them.

Two points:

1 - I've always preferred the Callaway ball to the Pro-V, which was recently busted for copying it.

2 - Titleist and Pinnacle are both made by a company called Acushnet. Between the two brands, Acushnet has like 70% market share. Titeist has promised to put out a "new" Pro-V which does not rely on stolen technology. Gay or not gay, it won't matter, tons of drones will buy the new Pro-V (at 40-48 bucks a dozen) and spent time gettting all giddy over the "How do you mark your titleist?" commercial. Can't you just hear them? "Wow-Wie! Zack Johnson and I mark our Titleist the same way!" As they wipe the snot from their nose and wonder why they've never seen a naked woman.

Due to the Titleist ban, I can't really comment on whether or not the regular ProV1 is gay. I've got a ball fitting scheduled in the next week, whenever I pick up my new irons. I'll go for the premium spectrum and hit driver, mid-iron, and sand wedge. The guy measures ball speed, spin, launch angle and carry distance. He uses a software program to determine other things like the apex and trajectory. We'll see what the numbers say, but I'm not sure this will effectively pick out my ideal ball. It will likely just exclude a few and it will be my decision as to what I want a ball to do.

the HX Tour is indeed better than the prov1, but its no where near durable enough for someone that has to actually buy them. the new touri series may be better.

I agree with this. There's no way an ordinary ProV1 is worth twice as much as a Gamer. The Gamer is IMO the best ball for the money available right now. It may not have the greenside spin of the ProV1 but you can more than compensate for that by using a little bit more loft.

are great if you're 250+ carry off the tee, if you know your short iron yardages down to +/- 3 yards, and are a low single digit handicap. If you're not all of the above, then urethane covered balls ( Pro V, Nike 1, HX1,..... ) are not for you, and are the biggest fraud ever perpetrated on the golfing public. The average amateur golfer will gain enough yardage off the tee with a surlyn covered ball to have at least one less club on approach on par fours and par fives, and on par threes will have be able to swing easier if they use a surlyn covered ball. Combine this with the fact that the average amateur will get at least one club less distance with his/her short irons by using a urethane ball vs. a surlyn ball and it's just hype that's selling most of the high end balls nowadays. I know most won't agree with this because the net's full of guys that text a good game, but personally I'll stick with my NXT's. Word

I played yesterday and was using my favourite non gamer, the D2 Distance (the old model, not sure how the 'freak' plays). I found these balls to be sweet from the first time I hit one, but after yesterday I must say I'm seriously considering bagging them as my full time gamer. They are stupid long off the driver and feel awesome off the putter. They are also sweet off the irons and I was getting to stop dead on the greens with a full shot from 6 iron down. They aren't quite as checky on chips, but I rarely play courses with greens fast enough to worry about checking it up, in fact I gain from the slightly extra roll as you ar short more times than long from around the green.

FON, I have used the D2 feel which is the old version of the gamer and liked that too, but for my taste the slightly firmer feel of the Distance was a better fit for me, and the Distance is flat out longer than any other ball ou there. Having said that, I can certainly understand why you are bagging the gamer, as I found the old 'feel' D2 to still be a real good ball but just not as good as the Distance. It's probably like comparing the regular V1 (gamer) with the V1X (Distance), both great balls but a matter of personal taste. It certainly doesn't hurt that they are about half price of urethane covered premium balls either.

Hey Nah, you got me interested in the D2 so I looked up the specs. The compression of the gamer is 88, similar to the regular pro v1? However the distance ball is only 58. What do you think about this. Is this the normal compression of "distance" balls?

Can't explain this. The "feel', definitely feels softer than the Dustance, so don't understand the compressions. As for your toher questions, I think most of the distance balls on the market do have low compression, because the lower compressions allows weaker players to compress the ball and get more distance.

It was on the actual top-flite website. They have all their different balls (new ones) with detailed specs. BTW the 88 compression was for the gamer, not the feel. While you're there check out the Diva, it might be perfect for Edgey.

Just had a look at that site, very informative. The Freak is a fair bit higher compression than the D2 Distance, so I'm assuming they will play differently. I might have to stock up on D2's before they run out. I also noted that the Feel had a much thinner cover than the Distance, which could account for the softer feel of the Feel. There is lots of interesting things on that site. I can't believe they are still making yellow balls. I rememebr in the early eighties yellow and ornage balls were huge. I wonder why they lost their appeal?

the prov is for seniors who do not generate enough club head speed to fully compress the x. i cant comment on the stolen technology part but i will say that it will cause me to switch to another company, CHEATING and STEALING cant belong in as pure a bag as Mine. ( i have no titleist golf balls anymore) new prov made by same lying cheating stealing company. I hear the Callaway i tours are supposed to be nice. I will be testing once i get a swing that would give me credible results. Although i'm not terribly fond of the hex dimple look. Till then i will be playing hand made featheries.
