Payne Stewart
I watched a bit of a Payne Stewart tribute yesterday. I haven't been into the golf thing long enough to have watched him play. Man that guy had a good swing. I like the pants too.......

Payne Stewart was a baller for sure. Maybe not the most talented guy, but he had style and was pretty clutch.

It took a long time before anyone would even fake an attempt at a Payne Stewart. But just recently that attention mongering dad and his young son did the best they could. Sure, a mylar balloon isn't even close to a private jet. But at least they tried.

I used to think Payne Stewart was an a-hole...
I was at a PGA Tour event back in the early/mid 90's. It was bloody cold, raining, and downright nasty. There were only a handful of spectators on the course and this was a Saturday. A friend and I were watching on the 16th hole when Payne Stewart pulled his drive right near the ropes. We were just a few feet from his ball. He walked up, looked at his lie in the rough, then looked at us and said "What, you guys don't have anything better to do?". I figured players would be glad that a few of the fans were braving the inclement weather to cheer the players on. Instead, he seemed to be pissed that he hit in the rough, had no chance of reaching this par 4 in two, and decided to insult us. At that moment, I decided Payne Stewart was a world class a-hole. A few years later after his plane crashed, all of his buddies on tour kept saying what a great guy he was and what a dry sense of humor he had. Looking back, I guess he may have just have been being sarcastic when he made that comment to us. I felt pretty bad and have now forgiven him for not being more hospitable to us. He may now rest in peace...
Regardless, it was a real shame the way he and the others on board died.

On the show I watched yesterday his peers said that he changed after he won the US open. He decided he had to be more serious about his game and he wasn't very pleasant to be around after that. I guess before that he was the "life of the party" and real jokester.

If I were in the position you described, I would hope I'd be focused on winning not Phil Mickelesoning the gallery. So I'd be alot closer to telling the gawkers to f off than thank them.

Exactly . . . . .

I hear what you are saying, but at the same time these guys need to understand that they would not have the privilege of playing golf for a living if it weren't for the fans. While they don't need to suck up to the fans and kiss their azzes, they probably should not be a-holes towards them either. Even tiger understands that you can't be a total d*ck to the fans. Lucky for him, he has DB Steve on the bag to be the bad guy...

A good friend of mine breaks out Plus 4's whenever he gets the chance. Looks like a total d-bag.
Noshuz, Payne Stewart had a pretty big alcohol problem back when he was the life of the party. It almost cost him his marriage. Then he quit drinking and started hanging around guys like Tom Lehman who sucked all the fun and booze out of him while replacing it with religion and iced tea. He was dead before he got on that plane.

Hmm. I recall that incident when Steve Williams scoffed at Mickelson, calling him a prick, and on another occasion, passing derogatory remarks about his boobs / weight.
Hmm. Who to dislike more?

This is all quite funny because a friend of mine who works in Tourism is hosting Steve Williams next week and it's all going to be on TV as part of a promo for The Kiwi Challenge which is being played at Kauri Cliffs & Cape Kidnappers in November.
He was really excited about meeting Steve Williams and knowing I am a golf nut he thought I'd be really impressed. When I told him that the rest of the world considers Steve to be a total DB he looked really disappointed & deflated.

Keep working on him. Cape Kidnappers has some impressive cliffs. I'm sure he could make it look like an accident.
I'd try snapping his picture mid swing while standing at the edge of one of the cliffs. When he came at me, I'd just step aside.

It may not be that well known in the states, but Payne Stewart was a regular on the Oz tour before he made it big in the states (he even married an Aussie girl). I remember him coming down here a few times in the 80s. When he got here there were a couple of Aussies (Rodger Davis and Stewart Ginn) who had been wearing plus 4s for years. I think ol Payne got the idea from them and tried to make it his signature. I would also hazard a guess that he picked up his drinking problems from his days on the Aussie tour too. Back in the 80s the drinking sessions after the round were more keenly contested than the golf. It's only the last 10 years that wowsers like Allenby and Appleby have come to be the norm for Aussie pros. Back in the 80s the drinking stories across every Aussie tour right down to the country pro-am circuits were legendary. The biggest drinker I've ever met (and I've met some huge drinkers over the years but this guy would put them under the table without raising a sweat) is a golf pro.

This brings back some memories NAH.
Remember Bob Shearer? Some of the stories of the big nights out involving him and other pros was as you say, the stuff of legend.
