What's the deal with Ping irons?

My opinion is that the Ping Eye 2 iron was and still is the best iron ever produced. Periodically, I try out later models or models from others like Titleist or Mizuno and I can never find anything that is as accurate or has as perfect a feeling off the clubface. I'm a 2 handicap for reference. Hold the applause.

Anyway, I think Ping did a great job with the G2, G5 and i5 iron line. It was innovative and the differences in design were quite different from the Ping i3+ line. However, I think they moved backwards when they produced the Ping G10 and i10. These two irons do not have that traditional Ping feel. The G5 is perhaps the best feeling iron I've ever tried. Both the G10 and i10 irons feel harder and heavier. Not as much spring off of the face.

Now, they have come out with the G15 and i15 lines of irons. I think Ping should be a bit embarassed. These irons look almost identical to the G10 and i10. In fact, I would argue that they look worse. I took both of them to the range and again I thought they felt harsh and unresponsive. Nothing like the feel of the G5 or i5.

I've always wondered why they don't come out with an iron that looks like the Eye 2 but with some modern touches. I also think the ZZ-Lite shaft is the best one ever made. It's perfect.

One more thing...I think the Ping i15 driver is dreadful looking. It looks like I'd hit it a mile high in the air. The G15 driver is very nice looking but basically looks the same as the G10.

Careful Ping, you don't want to be like Callaway.

I've never played the PING Eye 2 irons, so I can't give you an experienced assessment. I played the Eye 3 irons for about a month and hated them. To me, they were not any different than the Callaway X-18s, Taylormade R7s and Nickent Pro 3DX irons I played for several years. While I was playing with these irons, I shot in the low 90s. I never did seem to get any better no matter how much I practiced or what I tried. Last year at this time, I bought some Mizuno MP-52s. They were much harder to hit than the game improvement irons I had hit for years, but having paid a premium for them I was determined to learn to hit them. Through many hours at the range and on the course, I learned how to swing correctly and hit the irons. My scores dropped into the mid 80s consistently. 5 months ago I bought the Mizuno MP-67s and also a set of MP-33s. These are pure blades. My swing has got even better and I now golf consistently in the low 80s. I am a cu nt hair away from breaking 80 and moving into the 70s consistently. I tell you this because I don't think it would have happened if I would have stuck with the PINGs and Callaways of the world. If you hit them well, then power to you. I think if you are as good as you say you are, it is likely that you have always had a natural swing that you have not had to work hard at getting. Congratulations, keep hitting them straight.

I really don't pay any attention to whatever Ping has been doing for the last 20 years. Myself, and all the other great sportsmen, believe Ping caters to choppers and choppers only. It's common knowledge that the Ping staffers on tour are playing proper, non-Ping irons with some gay Ping paintjob. Google it.
G2, G5, G20, it doesn't matter. If it says Ping, it's garbage.

Welcome to the forum FamousDavis. I don't know what these guys have their panties in a bunch over...you seem legit to me.

I just started bagging some ping i3+s, and they do feel hotter and less harsh than the i10 & i15s Ive sampled. Mizunos may have better feel and workability, but Ping has the distance edge.

Well I played the Ping G5's on a golf trip this year and if you reckon Ping did a great job with them that doesn't say much about their other irons. Hard, harsh, unfeeling, unresponsive chunks of rock hard steel, not to mention that they were oversize monstrosities with massive thick soles on them and huge offset. The only thing I can think of that they have going for them is durability. No thanks!

Some good players love Pings, most don't. Choppers who play these overpriced irons are only trying to buy a game and their opinion in questionable.
Pings being a rather hard cast iron are pretty harsh and dead feeling when compared to soft forgings, although the Eye 2's and zings do have their devotees.
I agree that the importance of irons in the quality of your ballstriking is overrated, but the importance of appearance at address, and feel, is also not to be underestimated. Ping's out there designs and so so feel don't appeal to many good or discerning players.

Hiya OP, I found a set of Black Nickel MP-68s a few days ago, bought em with stock shafts, and swapped them with PXs 7.0. They did not offer S300s, much to my disappointment.

Why would we applaud a 2 handicapper. They are quite very common round my way. And the nice thing about them is they never tell you they are 2 handicappers. I'd start blowing my trumpet when you are off +2 and better. And then, blow it quietly.

I have always felt the same way but with the Ping ISI's being my favorites. Nothing else has ever duplicated the feedback or ball striking of these sticks. In fact, I once wrote to Ping suggesting they re-create the ISI design (very similar face characteristics as the Eye 2) with modern materials. I think they would sell a ton of them. I purchased and had fitted a set of i10's last year. Played with them 4 times and took them back for a credit. Ended up getting my ISI's refitted with new Nippon light weight steel shafts and had the lofts re-bent for accurracy. I ended up with better irons than I feel I could have purchased off the rack from almost any manufacturer.

OK, I tried to handle this thread nicely in the second post, but there is way too much "pleasantness" being shown in here for any of these PING POS!! All PINGS look like a bunch of shovels that ought to be held in the hands of our Hispanic brethren on the highway crews as they shovel asphalt onto the roads that I drive on!! Most PINGS have POS plastic inserts pasted on the back of the cavities that have graphic designs that look like Little Richard threw up on them! All PINGS are cast POS that make striking a golf ball feel no different than gripping and ripping a club against a tree! If the Hoover Dam ever springs a leak, the engineers could probably use one of those big arse heads off a PING club to seal it up!!

I had a set of copper ISI's for a wee while, nice clubs but the flight i got even after changing the shafts was still to high. Where i live high winds are a major factor on your shot choice and the pings just didnt give me the flight i needed. They were very forgiving with off centre shots losing maybe 5% distance, compared to forgings you can see 10-15%, so in my opinion nice clubs but for a slightly higher handicapper.

I like the BeCu Eye 2s. Their feel is about as good as a cast cavity back gets. They're quite accurate and the long irons are easy to use. I score lower with the Eye 2s than my MP-30s...and the score is usually all I care about...Thanks

I think the stainless Eye 2 feels better than the BeCu. The other thing that is great about Eye 2 irons is the traditional lofts. My PW is 50.7 degrees so there is no need for a gap wedge. I think having fewer wedges is better. My Eye 2 SW (57 degree) is the best I've ever used. I can flop it, run it, sand it and bump it...but I'll never dump it.

This is very dangerous territory on GR, FD. A former member hardly ever comes here anymore after having to try to defend himself after making the assertion that you can hit a bump and run with a lob wedge. My advice, don't go there. Just claim typo and try to ride out the storm.

I must agree, once you go past 9 iron you just get too much spin if youre playing a low shot for it to be a bump and run, its more like the shot i call the bumpy nippIe (you know the one, off the back foot one bounce, nip)

Gleneagles green's I dont think are that hard(although still very fast), being at the back of the ochil hills and at the end of the glen rain showers are a common occurance and overnight the greens collect lots of moisture from the mist that happens natrually every night. I find only during the hottest month or two of our summer they get hard.

In St.Andrews case your probably right as its a true links, but to be honest i only play it once a year so dont tend to try different shots, just want to play it well.
