Gary Player on the Golf Channel... Lessons from a Pro

I watched it today, he's 68 and still in good shape... He still plays Cally X-16 and GBB II driver... he said that he still shoots his age every week... amazing

Gary Player is 75 years old and his constant talk about exercise and diet is annoying. There is something about the guy that rubs me the wrong way. He is absolutely the most underrated player of all time. He has 9 majors. Nine!!

I have an old training video of his. The guy is a great communicator and can copy any other old tour player's swing just to show you what each one did differently. He can swing like Jones, Hogan, Palmer and others where you could swear that it's them...and actualy hits the ball that way. His own swing is a really fast tempo quick zap thing The guy must have a fast mental frame-rate.

He also promotes a vegan diet, for health and fitness reasons. He was certainly a great player (no pun intended) in his day, but I don't think I'd pay too much attention to what he said about the game. He's another one of Larry's yesterdays men, I haven't seen him on too many leader boards lately. There would be 15 year olds at my club that would wipe the floor with him and his stupid step through swing.

Yeah, I'm not a huge Gary Player fan. He seems to have "little man's disease." Also, in every interview I've ever seen with him, he seems like a terrible listener, often ignoring the question so he can talk about how he does 2000 crunches a day.

I find that most "good listeners" are actually not listening at all, they are just pretending they are listening while they con-cock what they are going to say when you stop moving your lips.

I am sorry, I did not catch that I was busy thinking and I saw that your lips stop moving, I could fake it, and say that I agree...Yes I agree, eggs get their strength from their full monocoque construction. See I too am a good listener.

I love Gary Player. Seen him play up close in the early '60's, early '80's and late '90's, and always watch the re-runs of Wonderful World of Golf or whatever black & whites the Golf Channel runs. He smoked almost as much as Arnie in the early days and couldn't hit a five iron more than 160 unless there was a 20 mph tailwind and the shot was down hill. He was always fit and had a tough look about him like if he wasn't a public figure and you saw him on the street, you wouldn't think to f*ck with him. Watched he and his son Wayne play in a mini-tour event in '83 that I marshalled. Gary was competitive but the son looked like he didn't have it and wasn't going to get it. A couple of weeks ago the Golf Channel ran a Shell's Wonderful World or something like that with Nicklaus and Player that must have been shot in the late '80's judging by the clothes and apparent ages. Damn Player was hitting some drives close to 300 and was past Nicklaus frequently and they both hit similar irons in from similar distances. Guess the equipment improvements helped Gary more than some of the others. He can be overbearing when he has the camera but off camera, he is one hell of a guy--the kind that you'd welcome next to you under fire and out-numbered.

I watched Player at the Raley's Senior Gold Rush back in 1995 (I think that was the year) and he easily hit it 260 to 270 yards. It was pretty cool because it was on a course that I had played many times. Make no mistake about it, the guys on the senior tour hit it a long way. One thing you learn when watching these guys is how different they play the game. I watched Trevino on a tough par 4 that is flat for the first 2/3 and then goes downhill with a lake in front of the green. He hit into the right rough on his drive which left him with a risky shot over the lake. He laid up to the left of the lake about 20 yards from the green. He then took a 9 iron and hit this perfect pitch that bounced once and then checked up about 5 feet from the hole and then sunk the putt. I thought to myself "you know, I've been in the same situation and always went for the green never thinking I could lay up left of the green and try to get up and down".

See FD even Trevino back then was showing you that a short pitch is something you should practice instead of swinging that full pitch over the pond all the time.

Thanks FD... maybe it's an old tape that they replayed, or maybe he's joking when he said "I am 68"... nevertheless, the guy plays Cally X-16 and GBB II driver and he works the ball quite well with those clubs

It has to be an old tape and the timeline fits perfectly. The Callaway X-16 irons were introduced in 2003 which is exactly 7 years ago and that is also precisely the year that the GBB II 415 cc driver was introduced. If Player is 75 now, he would have been 68 when the tape was made. Man, I feel like I'm Robert Langdon.

So he must be playing the X-22 irons and the Diablo Driver now?
I chose the road less traveled.

Since Player's in such good health, I'd wager 10 years from now he'll be around and playing X-32 irons which will be 10 whole generations better than Callaway's crack engineers can design today. Maybe they'll invent a new element like Ironman, if that's what it takes.

Hey, I have both GBB II ,380cc and 415cc and I like them both. In fact 380cc GBB II is now my primary driver (which is hard to believe that it replaces my beloved TEE driver), and I also play Cally X-16... so I should be playing like Gary, right?... Well, I just bag my Cally 2002 BB this year instead of the X-16... will see, I think I can hit 2002 BB irons a touch longer than my X-16, summer will tell

I think the original GBB II is an excellent driver and great looking as well. I don't like the dark blue head but I love the shape of it. I don't think anything today is much longer, if at all. The 2002 BB is much better feeling than the X-16 by leaps and bounds. 2002 BB are longer and much easier to hit. Money!!

Was the smaller headed GBB ruger titanium driver any good? I have a nice one that I was thinking of reshafting since it has a factory lite flex shaft on it. At the golf hall of fame in florida they had me hold a giant sized one for a picture I figured at some point Cally thought they had something there if they made that big marketing prop.

The X-24 Hot irons have been out for at least a year. I don't think they sold very well because of the black oxidized finish and stupid orange graphics. Diablo II came out about 6 months ago.

Yes, I can hit my GBB II drivers as long if not longer than any drivers out there... Glad that I keep my 2002 BB irons, in the long run I may like it better than my X-16... I can feel it

Have you tried any of the new drivers out there today? I'm just asking because that's an interesting observation if the GBB II goes as far as drivers do today. That's 7 years ago. Personally, I think driver distance technology reached its peak about 4 years ago.

No matter whether he's 68 or 75, I note he wasn't playing his own POS clubs. The ultimate disendorsement ofgoilf clubs is when the guy whose name is on them doesn't use them.

The other night I squeezed out a terd the width of a coke can (or at least it seemed like it at the time). I think I got a taste of how the smallest guy in the jail feels, ouch.

During summer a Cally van came to our local club and I tested Cally FT-iz (triangle head?) Diablo drivers, they can't match the feel and distance of GBB II, I tested my friend's TaylorMade 2009 and my brother's TEE XCG ,again GBB II is at least as long if not longer ... I hit driver quite straight so my test is valid.

Yeah, I guess I don't have the right diet to play with the big boys. All that bratwurst and sauerkraut would make for quite some perculating.

You ever have one of those dumps where you feel this giant smooth one coming out? Then, you look down and the thing has just disappeared! You're thinking to yourself "I know I'm not crazy and I know I felt that come out". It's one of those things that can test your sanity.

This is an extreme variation of one that feels like a contender for the world record, but is tiny and disappointing. It's strange how inaccurate the sphincter gauge can be.

Very true. The time it takes to grunt one out is not a good indicator of size. Sometimes the quickest ones are also the largest. Very similar to the golf swing..the more fluid and effortless...the larger the result.

Why does is seem fitting that a thread about Gary Player turns into a discussion of fecal matters?

I think a great analogy can be made to the golf swing. The first part is getting the proper fundamentals, legs evenly spaced, straight back, butt positioned firmly over the centre of the bowl. Then as it is squezzing out it's like the back swing, slow and steady, then as the head pokes out there is an athletic flurry as it accelerates through the shitting area, a lot like the downswing.

I think Homer Kelley wrote a book about this. "The Sh!tting Machine." He, of course, gets into the precise physics of the matter, unlike your simple, generalized description. Did you know that the abdominal muscles are the first of the four pressure points? Eating fiber is the first power accumulator. If you release the torque too early, this could result in a brown-cap situation, resulting in frequent safety wipes throughout the rest of the day.

To go one step further, it's very important not to rush the entire process. If rushed it can result in a less than solid outcome and a lot of unnecessary clean up. It's best to just let things work out instead of forcing the process.

Maybe this could be my second novel "All that you've ever learned about the golf swing is a bunch of crap".

I remind you guys to go easy on Gary Player for he is African American. This talk about Sheite on his thread will summon the likes of Al Sharlatan, and Jose' Jackson.

How is Gary Player African American when he doesn't live in America? His home is in South Africa. Wouldn't that just make him African?

Here's Taylormade's new R11 Driver. I think this is a big mistake coming out with a white driver. I think their white putters are stupid looking and they look dirty too quickly. This is almost as dumb as when they came out with orange colored drivers. Can you spell dum?

This monstrosity might knock TM off the top of the heap. They've been the biggest seller of drivers for the last 10 years or so (ever since the 320 series), but they may lose their top spot with this one. I can't see pros wanting a white driver, it just doesn't fit the eye standing over the ball. And if the pros don't use it, nobody else will. I agree the white putters are poo as well.

I was at the golf store today and the new Ping putters are really nice. I'm talking about the Karsten 1959 series of putters that just came out. I think I'm going to get the Anser X model. I just love the way it sets up and it feels better than any other putter I've tried. No insert, just raw steel.

I thought he became an American like David Feherty If he is just African then we could end up insulting over-achieving Kenyans.

Mizuno used ot have that colour a few years ago, the blue fire range. I had a blue rage which was also cobalt blue. Not a great driver but I dug the colour.

I can see that R11 turning a nice pale green color after a few rounds in wet conditions.

    Blech.

They should have brought back the copper finish like the old Ti-Bubble 2 had. Or better yet, just stick with black.

I believe Robert Garrigus is his primary disciple. He has taken the second round lead in Hawaii. On the closing holes Sunday afternoon, watch for evidence of AH 5 accumulator break down. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaapppppppppppppp!!

    Nah,

are you sure about the vegan diet? I once saw Player asked about diet and what he the secret was to, "eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper." I've pretty much followed that advice (big breakfasts, no lunch). While it hasn't done much for my golf game, I still have women 30 yrs. younger flirting with me. Incidentally, I like your handle so much, I use it to comment on political blogs. Might wanna see a lawyer.

I've read stuff about Player praising the benefits of a vegan diet, but he's not a vegan in the true sense of the definition, just a health freak. As for 'Not a Hacker', I think that our differing IP address should save me from liability for anything you post on political blogs. But if I get any nasty messages in my PM inbox, should I direct them to you?

110%,,,, I saw him fuccckkked up a drive with that driver, maybe 50-75 yds in front of him, then he used the same driver and hit it off the deck, long but to the left side of a green

KZG made a beautiful pear shaped cobalt driver called the Gemini. They are dirt cheap on eBay, and they are pretty solid. It's a smaller (380ish cc) head, but that's what she said...

Forget it. Those old driver heads are dinosaurs now. Anything pre 460cc just dosen't measure up anymore.

If I'm not mistaken, when researching the Gemini, lots of people had problems with the face of those drivers cracking. To be fair, it might be due to the blinding swing speed of some of the review posters.

I've had 3 KZG Geminis. The smaller headed driver is OK, but the 460 does indeed have problems with the face cracking. It happened to me during regular play. KZG are a bag of d!cks when it comes to customer service.
I still have a 380cc and a 460cc Gemini. Never worked for me, even with a variety of different shafts. Just a total POS in my opinion.

I've loved KZG blades ever since they named them after me (ZO).

If the face is known to crack, then the only way I'd buy the driver is if they name it after me too.
