You must be fortunate to be able to own a golf cart and, I assume, drive it to your golf course. We had an electric golf cart on our farm. A Fairway made in the 1950's with beautiful two tone robins egg blue and cream fibreglass body. I was just a kid maybe 8 or 9 when my father bought it and let me drive it. I crashed it into some pine trees on several occasions and ran it into a small stream another time but it just took those lickings and kept on with its tickings. But it would lose its charge rather quickly and it had about ten 6 volt marine batteries that would give off heavy sulphuric acid vapours in the barn where we kept it. Now Yamaha makes good products. I had two acoustic flat tops made by Yamaha and they were fine instruments but then I went all electric and I gave them away. The finest two wheeled vehicle I ever owned was a Yamaha RD 350A street bike that weighed about 310 pounds with a full tank but without me on it. It had a redline of 8,500 but I would wind it regularly to 12,500 and beyond in gears 2 through 5. I couldn't really screw it on in first because it would flip over on me and the little two cylinder two stroke couldn't pull much past 10,000 in sixth gear. It is said that Yamaha had little old Japanese ladies hand assemble the roller bearing crankshaft. They would sort the roller bearings so that each shaft was perfectly balanced. The crank on mine certainly was. I used to road race this motorcycle. I mean race other motorcycles and cars on the public roads. I was only beaten once and that was by a Porsche 911 that had a highly modified engine and gearbox with close ratio "Airport" gears. Thus said, I would highly recommend another Yamaha golf cart for you but I would get one with a gasoline motor and an adjustable exhaust system that would allow you to bypass the muffler and make a lot of noise, say, when a group in front of you is playing too slowly. Rev that sucker up thirty yards from the green they're dawdling on and they'll get the message. It would also be fun to have an upgraded engine with substantially more power and a defeatable governor so that you could send a message to the greens keeper shoud you be disatisfied with the speed and condition of a green. A doughnut or two on a green will send the message five by five. Mongrel out.

You should be ashamed for getting all excited about owning a golf cart. You should be out there walking 18 holes. Golf carts are an abomination and have destroyed the game and made it play twice as slow. Go over to Ireland or Scottland and play a round of golf. You'll walk and finish in under 4 hours.

I've never seen four walkers go faster than a foursome in carts. Last time I played a semi private course in Florida the only ones who could walk were the members. Today being Mens day at the local track, they have one league that is all walkers and NOBODY wants to get behind them. Last year we had a game going after a couple of the leagues finished. 2 foursomes on carts against each other. The walkers had started at least an hour earlier and by the 7th hole we had caught them and ended up playing as an eightsome because of the snail's pace of all those athletically fit guys carrying, pushing or pulling their clubs.

I guess if you had a group of guys in carts that were good players and played really fast you could catch a group of walkers. In general, however, the walkers are the better players who aren't drinking, forgetting clubs and walking back and forth to the cart all day. Walkers are faster. Just because you had one experience where you caught some walkers doesn't mean that carts are faster.

There will be some morons come in the thread and try to shame you for even asking about a golf cart, but that is because they cannot afford to buy one, so don't pay any attention to them. Golf has always been a game for the upper crust and these crumbs in here are nothing more than weekend plodders.

I have used both EZ Go and Club Cart golf carts over the years and they are both good carts. The key is maintenance -- if you take good care of your cart, it will take good care of you.

I've never been to a nice course where they had mandatory walking to speed up play. I'd rather ride in the beer cart where all the aiming fluid is kept...

That's because you're a complete hack and probably fairly new to the game. You grew up with carts and like them because you're lazy. True golfers walk the golf course and they will play faster than the average cart hog. I've heard you spout the benefits of carts on here before and demand that you and Dave take a cart in your match. That, son, is nothing short of pathetic.

The past month or so I had a foot injury that meant I couldn't walk and was having to hire carts just to get my golf fix. I am so relieved that my foot seems to have come right and I am walking the course again. Apart from everything else I enjoy the exercise aspect of golfing which you don't get in a cart. Also golfing in winter you can cool down sitting in a cart whereas walking helps keep your body heat up. Also if it rains at least walking you can use an umbrella but driving a cart in the rain is just a pain in the ass.

At some resort courses I have played where there are long distances between greens and tees and you'd almost need to be a mountain goat to climb the hills a cart is desirable but 99.9% of the time I much prefer to walk the course.
I chose the road less traveled.

Now where the f#ck am I?

Slow players are slow no matter how they get to their ball. It just happens that more people who suck balls at golf choose to ride.

So if you get four walkers that shoot 80 and under against four riders that shoot the same the walkers will be faster. BS

    This is completely true.

People who ride carts when on a course where walking is feasible are known as "Lardasses".

"Lardasses" are slower. It simply takes more time to move a fat-laden ass around. They also are more likely to be drunk and/or confused.

Look, I salute the "Lardass" for their willingness to be seen in public, but they're just plain slower on the golf course.

OK, fine. Next time you are up, FD, we'll play a round together -- you walk and I'll ride and we'll see who is faster. I bet $100 I'll be waiting on you most of the day. The consistent fact about golf, FD, is that whenever you submit your score at the end of the day, they do not ask you to post whether you walked or rode.

Now, if you are trying to make me look bad because I am not out exercising while playing golf, I probably have you in that category as well -- after we finish playing a round of golf, let's run a 4 mile (6.4 kilometer for you international guys) race. I'll finish first in that contest as well.

Sooner, think about what you're writing before you put it down for everyone to read. It's obvious that if we had a race with me walking, you in the cart, with no one in front of us and you were playing as fast as you could....you would win. But that is fantasyland. We're talking about people who take carts in a general sense. It's been my experience that good players who walk are always faster than the average person who takes a cart. If everyone walked the game would go faster. The average player pulls a club from the cart, walks to the ball, realizes they have the wrong club and walks back. Cart riders have to park far away from the green and then walk to it. Walkers walk in a straight line to the green. Many holes are cart path only.

She only refilled my diet coke three times. It was half empty for over 3 minutes. I find that kind of service sub par at best and certainly not deserving of a tip.

The biggest annoyance for me is when you have missed the green and you are not sure what sort of lie you have or what type of shot you will need so you have to grab about 3 clubs plus your putter so you can walk to where your ball is and assess the shot. Walkers take their whole bag so it's not an issue. For Larry this is not really a problem. He just needs to grab his putter since he hits 93.7% of greens.

You need to get away from the golf range and out on the course more, FD. Here in Oklahoma, I've never seen a group of walkers who stay out of the way of a group riding carts. The better golfers on my home course ALL drive carts. Seriously, your claims of walkers being faster than cart riders in general seem absolutely ignorant to me from what I experience ALL the time on every course I play on. However, we all know that Californians are mostly bassackwards from the rest of the world, so it could be possible out there.

I think your views are biased based on the fact that you always ride in a cart. Of course you're going to defend it.

I would agree that if you have a cart group of low handicaps who play fast then they would most likely catch up to a group of walkers. However, it's my experience that cart players are very slow players. I just don't see how you can brag about taking a cart. Must be a mid-west thing.

Since everyone out thar in mid west has common knowledge of the fact that everyone in California surfs, and plays beach volleyball almost every day it really shouldn't come as a surprise that we would rather walk. Heck most of us jog to our ball than walk. At the turn we usually grab some carrot sticks and protein shake. This is in stark contrast to the fried chicken and sweet tea that you folks are consuming. Not there's anything wrong with that but this is the reason I think FD is butting heads with Sooner. It's just a different way of life. I gotta go now. Surfs up!

Agreed. I can't help but think that Sooner losing to Big Dave and me winning a couple of matches against Big Dave has caused a little angst. I basically beat Sooner in default. Now all he can do is challenge me to cart racing matches and 5K walks.

Being serious for a moment, at my club, the better golfers walk and unimpeded most of us are in under three hours. The cart people just ain't that fast. My course is a great walk with the right amount of hills.

You just play better and looser walking. After the round you feel more like you've done something. From there I go work out if it's time.

Part of the reason it works for me is the weather's so idyllic here. If i lived in a s.hit weather place I'd probably ride.

You may be joking but i'm eating my heart out because it's another good day out there but i'm waiting around to find out whether the gf is too sick to come out and play.

There's no question that you play better and enjoy the round more when you walk. That's the way golf was meant to be played. For one thing, cart paths ruin the look of a golf course. That's one reason that courses like Bally Bunion are so beautiful. Well, I guess the ocean, cliffs and beautiful landscape have something to do with it as well.

    This is pissing me off...

There is no way in hell that carts are faster than walkers.

I mentioned that I passed a foursome on the 9th hole, remember, in my Harding Park thread I think?... I said all it took was a stare and they invited me to pass them; maybe it was another thread.

I neglected to mention that they were all in carts, and my foursome were ALL walking; I didn't say anything in that older comment because carts are always slower in the real world; never gave it a thought until now.

The other three in my group had those gay ass roller wheels, and I carried my bags on my back; it is comfortable for me...

Carts are slower; that is a fact. I have ridden carts before, but as a general practice I think carts are for f@ggots if you are under 60.

Personally, I think anyone who rides carts (outside of yearly family/friends outings or filming for GR) is a total retard unless you are filming or doing something else, perhaps visiting a course for the first time is ok.

    Carts are gayer than Rupaul.

It's not my fault God made me this beautiful.

Not to be a nip... or maybe to be a nip... when I am paired with a cart I'm more often than not waiting greenside with my bag while cart hackers get their shots and clubs in order and finally drive up and join me... not being a jerk... just stating fact.

This is what I've found to be true every single time I've walked with other guys who are taking carts. Think about it. If you're walking each player goes to his respective ball location. If you're taking a cart you have to ride to one guy's ball and then the next guy's. The other problem with taking a cart is if you're riding with some moron who takes forever to put his club back in the back. You know the type. The idiot who wiggles his club back and forth to get it in there perfectly. Jerk@ff.

And if that individual has head covers for every club, add another 30 seconds per shot. I try to avoid playing with guys who have 14 head covers. In poker, its called a "tell". Best thing is if you and your cartmate play "cart golf". Everyone knows what that is. If your cartmate hooks one into the left rough, you should put a draw on yours so that it ends up on the left side of the fairway. And vice versa. It is also a good idea to avoid courses that mandate players using carts to keep them on cartpaths. This is a sign that the course was either built on a swamp where no course should have been allowed to have been built or course drainage is inadequate due to poor design.

While I would much rather walk, carts do have there advantages and are faster IF you know how to play from them. That means having the foresight to park in the right spot and grabbing 2-3 clubs at a time if necessary. Also, if it's over 95, those last 4 or 5 holes can be brutal if you're dealing with hills and/or partaking in a alcoholic beverage or 2 which I've been known to do.

Isn't that interesting how it's always the hackers that have iron covers? I especially like the guy who takes out the little groove cleaning tool and cleans the face of his club prior to putting the iron cover back on. Then, he gets back in the cart and drives 25 yards to his topped shot.

OK, see, here is the breakdown in communication. The groups I play in every day, we all have our own separate carts, so everyone goes to their own ball. You, apparently, when talking about carts, are always implying that there are two riders in each cart. If so, I can see your point. However, I still stand on the confidence that a walker cannot keep up with a single golfer using a cart.

This also brings up another point that I think is a breakdown in our communication -- you golf a lot on weekends and I mostly golf on weekdays. On weekends, you have a ton of hackers that are playing weekend warriors and they all come out and share carts. On weekdays, you have more retired golfers who each own their own carts.

You might also be golfing at a course where they do not allow golfers to bring in their own carts. At my course, they have a cart barn that is specifically built for members to store their own carts.

And then he steps up to his ball and has to walk back to his cart because he has forgotten his (choose one) cell phone with golf course app/gps device/laser device/gps-laser combination device and then he stands beside his ball and measures distance but has to go back to the cart because it reads 7.5 more yards than he thought from the postion of his previous shot and has to grab the next longer shovel. Then his cell phone rings. If it is not the same device as the one with which he has just measured distance with, then he has to go back to the cart again to retrieve it from its holster that is velcroed to the cart dashboard. It is his wife/girlfriend/boyfriend/therapist/stockbroker/rabbi/councilman/
priest/general contractor or whatever. He goes back to his ball with club in one hand, cell phone in the other and completely forgets that he has a golf shot to execute. I'm playing with him and while all this has been going on, I have reached into a hidden compartment in my bag and retrieved my semi-auto and the screw-on suppressor, checked that a round has been chambered, take it off safe, walk up behind him, stick the end of the suppressor behind his right ear and pull the trigger. The rest of the round goes quickly.

I've never heard of a foursome where each person has their own cart. Is this a private club? I can't imagine a public one allowing that. Of course a single riding cart hog would outrun a guy walking. That's neither here nor there.

Even on weekdays the walkers would play faster. Who cares?

It sure ain't the walkers using iron covers. It's generally the "Lardasses" in carts.

Two or more singles in different carts within one group is conclusive proof of extreme social disfunction.

Not if they are singles, FD. I always heard you Californians were thickheaded. Just forget it, FD, we can't communicate because our cultures are way too different.

The other day I played with two guys who shoot in the 90's and my buddy who shoots high 80's. The three of them took carts and I walked. Not once did I ever slow them down. On just about every hole I got to the green before they did. Plus, it helped that I always have the longest drive. That way I can't stand there and look annoyed while I wait for them to hit. Then I get to stick my chest out and walk 30 yards up to my drive.

If look at the equation you just presented it's easy to see why you never slowed them down.
2 guys you have 15 shots on and 1 you 10 on, and you're out driving them. All of those things buys you the time to walk and still stay ahead them. If you level out the playing field, and put those guys in carts, they are the ones that will wait on you. Not only because your drives and amount of strokes are the same, but because anyone that good is going to be cart savvy enough to know where to park, what clubs to pull and to not waste unnecessary time to get the game played.

The other day on our local public course ( the only golf course for 40 miles in any direction), Par 72, 6000 yards from the whites, with a slope of 129. Me, 54, and a golfing buddy, 78, played 18 holes in one hour and 45 minutes. He shot a 88 and I shot a 84 which is right at my handicap. Walk that MF'er.

They have to pull the cart 40 yards to the side of every green. I can walk straight to it. Plus, since I'm always teeing off first I've got my bag on my shoulder and ready to go. Those cart morons have to walk back to the cart, fumble with their dingy and then drive up to their skymark driver. Shoot, you'd better recognize.
