How often do you buy news clubs?

There have been a number of threads recently regarding; the huge expense of golf clubs, the fact that TaylorMade in particular bring out something new every 5mins and the merits/pitfalls of clones.

I am interested to know how often people change their clubs and what are the reasons for doing so. Is it simply to keep up with the latest technology, do some buy a new set each season as a matter of routine, do people find it difficult to get totally comfortable with one set? I think I remember Monty was/is something of a collector and has loads of great sets.

The reason I ask is because personally I take ages to buy any golf clubs on the grounds that my intention is to play them until they wear out and I need something I know I will be totally happy with, to the exclusion of everything else. I want to eliminate any doubt from my game and Im just not keen on change. The last thing I want to be thinking about when I am playing golf is -have I got the right clubs- or -if I had my Hogans with me today I reckon I would have been 3 shots better-. I mentioned in a previous post that in 16 years of playing Ive only ever owned 3 sets of irons, 3 drivers, 2 three woods and 3 putters. To be honest if I am away from home and somebody offers me a game, unless I am able to use my own clubs I would decline the offer (you sound like fun Corbo!).

I am not suggesting my approach is correct, golf equipment is about personal preference and if you feel confident with a set, whatever it is on that day, it will help your game. And I understand the nature of golf and the enjoyment we all get from telling our fellow golfers about our newly purchased toys in the pursuit of golfing excellence.

Perhaps its like anything thats driven by research and development, it seems the minute you leave the shop your product has about 3 minutes before something bigger and better comes along and its the manufacturers that drive the doubt I mentioned previously.

Lets see I have just been playing 3 years, I have changed my clubs a couple of times

In the last 3 years these are the clubs I've had.

Drivers- T/made 320, Nike forged 350, Cobra 310 cc, Titleist 983 k
3woods- Callaway steel head, titleist 970f, t/ade v-steel
irons- ben sayers, mizuno pro II's
wedges- two sets of vokeys, md.
Putters- T/made monza, oydessy dfx.

i have had my titelist dci 981 irons for about 6 years, 975j driver for 4 years.

just minor wedge and putter changes here and there.

i cant afford to buy anything new.

over the last two years i've gone from a cobra driver, walmart three woods, tommy armour irons, titleist sand wedge, and a white hot, to an R7, taylormade woods, RAC irons and wedges and a Scotty Cameron. It has cost a good amount (though ebay cut the price in half), but I felt if I wanted to keep improving, I would need to upgrade from my somewhat starter set.

Basically, I plan to stick with this atleast until I finish high school (2 yrs), and then make maybe slight changes to wedges, drivers, or putters, but as far as the RAC's, I plan to use those for a while and become very consistent with them

hey....i'm not waiting til i graduate from high school for anything. I already have 2 sets of blades, and last year was only my second year golfing.

I have had my Titleist DCI irons for ten years.

I bought my TM R540 Driver last spring and my Sonartec woods. I previously had Orlimar.

I have had my T-line putter for 17 years.

Cleveland 900 54 wedge for five years.

I am going to buy a hybrid soon for 200 yard shots and will consider replacing the irons in the next year or so.

Absolutely nothing, judging by the video of your swing you posted recently you're going be pretty busy anyway. ;)

I keep mine about five years and then trade up. This time around I got lucky and my driver cracked so I got a new updated model at no charge. I just couldn't get rid of my Cobra Trusty Rusty wedge so I had it regrooved. I usually change clubs because they are worn out.
