Fairways and greens
I just got back from a golf trip where I played in a friendly (and very well run) tournament with a great group of 23 others.
Rotation (6 holes with each other player in the group), then alternate shot, then skins...
...and I finished a very respectable 4th (with my brother 5th) with a total of 7 skins in the top bracket and scored 84, net 71 (-1).
And nowhere on any scorecard I saw, was there anywhere to record how many fairways I hit. Just the number of strokes I took for the the hole.

Thanks, mate!
I don't know about "THE ONLY WAY". Only idiots talk about the "only way" when confronted with a whole bunch of people who can play the game pretty well, but do it so differently. ;)
But the way I was using for me was definitely working alright enough. The low handicapper of the group was in the top bracket/group with me for skins (and eventually won the tourney) and he could hit the ball pretty well (he was a 3.4 index). But when I was hitting my driver well, I was out with him and sometimes even past him.
Combine good length with pretty decent approach shots and you can score okay.

HAVING FUN is THE ONLY WAY... job well done

I obsess about hitting fairways, but I often can't bring myself to aim at the center of the green unless the hole happens to be there.
I know guys who are just the opposite. They hit driver fourteen times, even when it makes no sense at all, and then, when they accidentally hit a nice flat lie on the fairway and give themselves a good shot, they suddenly lose their nerve and are afraid to take it--or perhaps, afraid to waste the good drive.
We all play differently. I save my insanity for the approach shot, and with a good lie, I have the balls to aim at sticks even with fairway woods, even though I know it's insane.

Alan did you start this thread because your post in the Round Report thread didn't garner enough attention? Whilst you have made great progress I'm concerned that even in a thread purportedly about your golf trip there is an oblique reference to your old nemesis which shows you still are not fully recovered. For this reason I recommend you continue your current medication and stay in rehab.
I chose the road less traveled.
Now where the f#ck am I?

Fairways and Greens may not be the only way but, for me, it is certainly the easiest way. My lowest scoring rounds have always seen me hit the fairway, or at worst a couple of feet off and the green, or at worst the fringe. I tend not to hunt flags. Of a 16 handicap the centre of the green and a steady lag put usually means a par. UK greens tend to be smaller than US greens.
Nicely done Alan btw.

Hey! I'm not saying that hitting fairways or greens is bad...
...just that a par scored without hitting either is still a par.
Thanks!
It's still not where I want to be, but it's definitely a step in the right direction.

Couldn't agree more. Never thought you said that FW and Greens is bad. Its just what gets me round the course. If only I could do it on a consistent basis, despite working hard on my fundamentals.

And conversely, if you are to be "consistent" enough to take your game to beautiful resort courses and play in front of friends and their wives, you must have the ability to hit it to the right place off the tee and to the green from there.
Everyone eventually becomes good at "recovery" golf on their home course, but those guys have disaster rounds when they travel. Guys with single digit handicaps score over 100 strokes.
So if you are serious about golf, take the lessons and then do the hard work to ingrain the fundamentals necessary to "consistently" hit them straight off the tee and from the fairways to the greens.
We need the ability to hit at least 9 of 10 serviceable drives on the range. If several of 10 balls go sideways, ALL of them will go sideways on a tough course when you are nervous. Then you find yourself out there trying to hit a 3w 240 from the rough.... etc. etc. etc. The punishment from poor fundamentals just snowball. Hogan said it best, "almost right is COMPLETELY WRONG!"

I have no problem taking my game anywhere, Larry.

I shot my 84 on a course I'd only played once before; a course that had quite a few blind shots, BTW.

I am serious about golf. And without lessons I got myself to better than you'll ever be.

Very few of my drives "go sideways", Larry; and that's on the course. And I wouldn't try to hit a 3W 240 from the rough. I'd take my medicine, hit 9 or perhaps 8 iron and leave myself a short wedge shot I could get close enough for par. I did it a few times on Sunday.
That's real golf, but then, you're no longer interested in that, are you?

FW's and greens is way overrated. Doesn't matter how it gets in the hole. Myself, I am way more impressed with somebody that can overcome adversity, make a great recovery shot and birdie the hole or par it. To me it shows that he has a much better understanding of his swing and course management. EVERYBODY hits bad shots. Its how you deal with it that shows if you are a player.

Right on. That's why Seve and Phil got so many fans following them. Tiger and the Shark too. Super recovery shots beat fairway shots to middles of greens all day. Real talent is revealed in the area within 50 yards of the green.p

Doesn't matter what type of golf you play, the SCORE is the only thing you write down. Never known the wives and mistresses...oops i mean friends, to ever stand and watch or play. Only thing they are interested in is shopping or hanging out at the bar, and only out of politeness do they ask how you went. Only thing i ever recall saying, playing partners included is i shot........ Not once have i said well i hit x fairways and on top of that x greens in reg.
Couple of weeks ago in a comp i had a birdie on a par 4 by hitting the fairway with a topped drive then topping a 7 iron which run up on to the green leaving me a 30 foot putt which i made. Is that recovery golf because my fundamentals got out of whack, or is that fairways and greens? Big tip, i wouldn't give a sh*t who was watching, a birdie is a birdie.

Alan Doyle was never on the PGA tour before he got on the Champion's Tour. Until he was 50 years old he made a nice living in private golf matches, winning money from top amateurs and pros. He says they mostly beat themselves, hitting them sideways trying for a few extra yards. "The fairway can be a lonely place" when only one golfer is smart enough to back off and just get the ball into play.
See you out there. I will be on the short grass. But like Alan, I would help you look for your ball among the trees.

Well of course I help my group look for their golf balls when they are hit errantly, Larry!
But as usual, you miss the point. The very best in the world can't hit anywhere near all the fairways, Larry. What I can do, that you cannot is score well. Any time you finally get up the nerve, I'll demonstrate that to you... ...but only if you put up enough cash.

Gee i wish i had a career like Alan Doyle, instead of the 60 plus hours i do a week managing a 50+ million dollar a year business with 125 staff. Then i would be able to hit more fairways and greens. Then my SCORE would just get better and better........ and i would have great fundamentals (if anyone could agree what they are!!). And i could be lonely on the fairway, now that would be fun! Then i could say to Alang at the end of the hole "what did you score? God you beat me again, how did you do that. Must be more than one way!!"....... "lets go have a beer, cause all the ladies are in the bar and they will want to know how many fairways and greens you hit"

You can't be serious. How could anyone not prefer to watch a craftsman like Tim Clark hit every par 4 over 470 yards with one of his hybrids or that gutty little bulldog Corey Pavin smoke his 6 wood to the front of the green on a 495 yard par 5 instead of those oafish loose-hitting louts like Bubba Watson and Robert Garrigus have to hit sand wedges after driving it 360 yards into the hay?
Mostly Taylormade clubs now except for two Ping I25 hybrids, Mizuno 54 & Callaway 56 wedges.
