Any Pros out there that play CBs?

I was wondering after all this discussion about blades v. CBs if there are actually any pros on any Tour playing with CBs?

I followed David Toms around a year or so ago at a tournament and he was playing Cleveland cavity backs. Of course, he is only the #4 money winner this year, so maybe he doesn't count........

The current leader at New Orleans is Pernice. He plays CB's.

Yeah...FWIW my 2004 Darrell Survey Almanac shows the top six irons played on the PGA tour are:

    1. Taylormade 300
    2. Cleveland TA 1
    3. Mizuno-MP 33
    4. Callaway SH X-16 PS
    5. Nike Pro Combo
    6. Cleveland TA 7

So, you got four cavity ,and two blade in the top six.

Trevor Immelmann uses Slingshots as his long irons and Grace Park uses NDS

Last I knew, Jim Furyk still played CB's. I know he played Hogan Apex Plus (CB) when he won the open a few years back.

He still plays them. If you go to any of the club makers sites and check out what the pros play, a lot of them will show that cavity backs are common on tour.

All the Callaway staff players play CB's simply because Calaway does not make blades. infact the only forged club they make is the new X-tour that just came out.

Probably the number one reason there are so many pro's playing CB's is MONEY! They get a lot by endorsing what is the latest greatest iron a manufacturer is trying to get the public to buy. Number two reason... traditionally blades or more correctly, muscle backed irons, tend to be a more low trajectory ball flight. The trend on tour is to flight the ball high to stop on the fast paced greens of the USGA and PGA courses. Another thought here is that twenty years ago the average pro drive was around 280 yards. Today these cats are bombing the driver over 300 on average with some of the big hitters routinely topping 320-330 a pop. Thus, leaving most with 8 irons or less in their hands into the green. So high ball flight and spin numbers become more important than staubing a pured 5 iron from 180-220 yards away. Anyhow, just my thoughts and there are still lots of pro's hitting the MB's.

    Adam Scott
    Vijay Singh
    Tiger Woods
    Ernie Els
David Toms (Sorry, CG2's are certainly a muscle-back)

All play blades and are arguably 5/6 best players in the world.

To say that anyone else who doesn't play blades and is a top player is doing it for the money is probably too strong. However, Callaway is the #1 cavity manufacturer. If your going to carry the Callaway brand you've got to play CB's. You've also got to know that Taylor Made will almost demand that Goosen plays RAC's.

"Grin and Spin" played CB's when he wore the Titleist brand, so it's a safe bet that Phil prefers them, and he's pretty good ehh?

Overall though, it's pretty obvious blades are the perferred irons by better players. Just look at how popular Mizuno's were on tour before the contract wars.

I've said this before, but to me the more improtant thing is that the clubs MUST be forged. Blades or CB's are less of an issue. Forged clubs just feel soooo goood! Gotta be forged for me....from now on.

When I followed Toms around in 2003, he was definitely playing cavity backs. He may be playing blades now.

Freddie Couples is said to be using the Bridgestone J33 Combos. Blades in the shorter irons, and morph to cavity backs in the longer clubs.
    Seldom right, never in doubt......
