It's more basic than that. Intolerance and a desire to impose one's will and beliefs on others is the plague of the world. Whether it takes the guise of the Religious Right, Islam, Marxism/Leninism (more in the past except in North Korea and a few other pockets), Fascism, or any other intolerant idiology, it's people trying to control other people against their will. Plenty of evil has been done in the name of religion, but plenty of evil has been done in the name of other causes, too. Don't confuse the abuse of religion with religion itself.
Addendum: It the MIXTURE of politics and religion that is the cause of the majority of the problems with "religion". Each uses the other to advance their self interest, to the detriment of society as a whole.

Actually, you can strike out Buddhism off of that list... AFAIK there's no such thing as a 'fundamentalist' Buddhist sect... Buddhism is all about living 'one with the world', just like Taoism. They're both 'friendly' religions.

I don't mind living with different cultures but I think it makes sense, that instead of learning all the different languages, we just stick with one language-"The English Language" which is already spoken here. Just imagine if we closed our borders and ignored the rest of the world, who would police all the criminals taking over their countries? Who would feed them? It isn't religion that is the plague of the world....it's the practices of people who cause the problems in the name of religion that are the issue. If any true believer, Islamic, Christian, whatever PRACTICED what was preached in the Bible, Koran, etc., we would not be in the predicament we are in.

I have yet to find a mention in either about killing innocent civilians or developing nuclear war capabilities or launching rockets from hospital buildings and schools as being an edict from either writing.

We have have the longest peaceful transition of power in a form of government that preserves individual liberies. Even the Ancient Greeks republics, that had not codifed so much liberty to all, have had resorted to imperialism.

Modern America can only be judged by other large modern hetrogenous countries such as Brazil, India, Indonesia, China (- well, not so diverse there), Russia...can not compare such a large and diverse society as ours to small homogenous states such as Spain, Japan, Sweden, Thailand, etc.

Our President W. Bush's incompetance will come to end of his term in a couple of years. The way he has mismanged our wars in Iraq and Afganistan alone deserves impeachment. It's the sacrifices and dedication of our fine arm forces that make him look far better than he is. Perhaps our fine republic can get Senator McCain to restore the image of the GOP, Presidency, and our national reputation. Personally, Gore would be even better for us. Again, my point is that my country has a way of peacefully "righting" itself: Our "Founding Fathers" were brilliant.
